We heard about Rainham Marshes from the vouchers published by Southwest Train. In order to get "two for one admission ticket", we travelled to Purfleet with C2C train from Fenchurch Street near Tower Hill on 16 August. After leaving Rainham, we could see the marshes and the building with red and white stripes from the window. After leaving Purfleet station, we walked through the residential area and riverside along the Thames river. Coming to the Thames Estuary, we could see London's skyscrapers beyond. The building of the visitor centre of RSPB Rainham marshes looked very striking. We showed the train ticket and voucher at the reception, and got discounted admission entires. We were then given the map and told that the area contains 2.5-mile circular trail with woodland, reedbed, and marshes. Having arrived at the site ... read more

I'm afraid I have returned to England. You may remember I was a very organised old bean at The Learning Trust but because I was on holiday I decided to forego my organised persona and do things on a whim. The result was that on leaving NY I found that every single hostel in Boston and Philadelphia was booked up with no vacancies. I could of course have moved onto another hotel but as hotels are around $1200 a week compared to $200 a week for a hostel it would mean blowing all my money in the first few weeks of my travels. Having difficulty finding somewhere to go I decided to come home and have a rethink. My travels aren't over, I just need to organise them better so I don't get stranded with nowhere ... read more

Went to Boreham where three generations of Lovedays lived. Saw some Loveday gravestones in the Churchyard and John left his wallet in the safe keeping of the church assistant. We had to backtrack and collect it during a baptism service. Travelled through London to Hammersmith without a problem. Dropped the 'bags' off at the hotel and Geoff and John returned the hire car to Hertz at Marble Arch (central London) HOWEVER they forgot to fill it up with diesel so they went 500 yards up the street to the nearest service station,,,,,, and did not return the car for at least another hour!!!!!!!! They went via Euston and Oxford Street in heavy traffic. John made lots of friends with BMW drivers and had trouble distinguishing between red and green lights. The problems continued. The Marble Arch ... read more

Thanks to everyone who came to my leaving do yesterday. I had a great time and got suitably choked up, both by the fact that I will miss you all and by the large number of beers people insisted on buying me! Thank you to everyone who offered to get me a drink, I had to turn some of you down as I do not wish to fly to New York in a coffin. I would also like to say that I found the women to be generally more huggable and squeezable than the men so try harder next time guys. I was going to proceed to rate the ladies on a huggability scale of 1 to 10 but this website's rules prohibit it. Thanks as well to all those who bought me presents and to ... read more

Since D & A had stored their motorhome in their dealer's storage yard in Essex, the primary goal of the day was to get to Essex, recover the motorhome and, assuming it would start, drive it back to their hotel near Heathrow Airport. They asked the front desk staff at the hotel where they could catch the bus to the underground station. The hotel must not get a lot lot transit users. They tried to get us to use the Hoppa Airport Bus which costs 4 GB Pounds each but D & A had already purchased their Oyster cards (transit passes) upon arrival at the Airport the previous day and they were anxious to start using them. Eventually, they found their way onto the bus and underground traveling clear across Greater London from west to east. ... read more

The last day of my holiday :( It's gone so quickly and it will be hard heading home tomorrow. I've returned to England from the Spanish leg of my trip with a golden tan and a belly full of lovely food! The reason for my trip - Silvi & Paul's wedding - was absolutely superb. Set in the gardens of a boutique hotel the ceremony was conducted in English and Spanish... and when Paul was speaking.... sometimes Spanglish (This of course is untrue.... Paulito - you did a brilliant job)! There weren't too many dry eyes after the ceremony. Silvi was determined not to shed any tears.... we know how impossible for her that was to achieve. The food was absolutely amazing! We were standing in a courtyard sipping cava and course after course of gorgeous ... read more

What a year...... On this glorious day, in what has been a fantastic year 2010 (so far), which has been the best year 2010 which we have ever witnessed, I thought I would share the musings of a 22 year old jobseeker! Me and Fay have been home just over a month, and whilst adjusting to life post travelling has been very difficult, and very frustrating at times, things have by no means been as bad as we have expected. After a four month trip in which the two of us frequently rued the day we would be travelling home to Braintree, and even more frequently lamented the country we would be going home to, commonly labelling the place as boring and rubbish - and even some slightly less savory words which i wont repeat, ... read more
