Welcome to Steve ‘n’ Cathy’s travel blog. We’re off around the world (for the third time it has to be said) so we’re calling it RTW3. This first blog entry is to set the scene. Where are we going? We’re going to revisit some old favorites and some new places. Here’s the itinerary in summary. 1) A few days in Hong Kong to revisit old haunts and get over the worst of the jet lag. 2) Then on to Perth, Western Australia – never been, so 5 days there. 3) Across to Sydney – this is a return visit but we were there first in 1994. Steve is going to do the Sydney Harbour bridge climb, but Cathy has decided to be sensible and go shopping instead. 4) Then to South America (flying across the South ... read more

: Our beloved adopted child Dudley: On a cold day, after weeks of scouring the internet, we find ourselves heading to Essex from London to see if the 1992 VW T4 transporter will be the trusty companion we had been searching for. By this time we knew what we required... he needed to have been loved by his previous owner, be able to take Diesel, and get us around Europe - as far as Turkey and then back. We met George, Dudley's original parent, who was as much a VW enthusiast as you could find... we had found our new family member and within 7 hours of seeing him, Dudley was in our possession on the road back to London.... read more

Drove to Stansted Long Stay Car Park. Pre-booked ticket didn’t work. The car park people said via intercom that they couldn’t download details for our paid-up information. She said when we leave, we should go to the cashier and show them our paid-up voucher, so that we can exit without paying. We were very early before AA check-in opens. We had special all day breakst at Ponti’s. We tried the baggage weighing machine, paid 50p to weigh our larger luggage, 18,6kg. Relieve, when I paid for 20kg. Scheduled check-in should open at 1425. We found out check-in area at about 1435. Went there at discovered almost everybody had queued up. Difficult to find the baggage drop counter but eventually found it. Alboust 15 people already in the queue, and after about 10 minutes, about another 20 ... read more

Arrived in England yesterday morning, greeted by dear friend Helena at Heathrow airport. First stop Stonehedge, came to England, in 1993...Wow, 17 years ago, as a first stop beginning of 6 week backpack tour of Europe, my friend at the time did not want to see Stonehedge. Made it now and it is a wonder to see We decided to peek though the fence as you can not get near to touch the stones we could feel the very grounding energy from where we were. Helena and I saw very cute faces in 2 of the stones, it looked to her like some of the stones were burdened by the obligation of carrying stones. We then tried some wine in the gift shop and looked at books of ley lines and theories of how the stones ... read more

Some years ago there was an entertaining movie about a couple of chaps attempting the impossible in which their dual goals were to travel a comparatively short distance during a period of relatively extreme weather conditions in order to achieve self fulfilment at a very special time of the year. Steve Martin & John Candy made the world chuckle as Mother Nature and an unfortunate sequence of circumstances battled to defeat them. Their story is re-told today. Although the cast location & timescale are changed, the modes of transport & eventual happy ending remain the same. The first stage of our most recent jaunt to the Far East had gone well. A ride from the Cold Place up north in a taxi to a station led us to the next leg involving just one change of ... read more

"Where I'm standing right now", said the Wellington-booted historian, "was a detonation chamber - from which I could have blown up you and the bridge on which you were standing until a few seconds ago". We were in the grounds of Audley End House, an elegant manor with a history dating back to the 12th century, near Saffron Walden in Essex. The estate, purchased for the nation in 1948 for the princely sum of £30,000, is managed by English Heritage. On this occasion, we were attending a members-only event tracing the house's contribution to the defence of Britain during World War II. Our tour of the grounds and some of the behind-the-scenes areas normally prohibited to the visiting public was an eye-opener to a wartime secret of which we - and local residents of that time ... read more

Travel Blog - France #1 Bonjour! Actually for this entry is all about my predeparture plans and my quick visit to England. So just Hello for now I guess: Pre-departure I guess even before I left the US I had a pretty crazy little adventure. First I finished working at the fair. Yes people I still work at the MN State Fair 9 years after I started. This was my 7th year working there so I opened the booth… oooo hold on let me flex this finger that I used to turn the lock with the key I have to the booth.... yeah I know you felt that power right there. Naw it was pretty fun! I almost didn’t get sick of it. Almost. Afterwards I had some much needed prep time in the Twin Cities. ... read more
