This was originally built as a Chapel of Ease for St Nicholas Church (14th century.) A Chapel of ease is a sort of overspill church, but also closer to many of the parishioners. St Peters Church is on the level, between London Road and Lewes Road, occupying its own little island of green. Building began in 1824, and the church was consecrated in 1828. The first stone laid and the consecration service were performed by the same man; Reverend Carr. The building, like its sister church St Nicholas is grade II listed. It was designed by Sir Charles Barry (architect of the Houses of Parliament) in Gothic Revival style. He won the right to be the designer in an open competition. A spire was designed by Barry in 1841 but was never built. There were originally ... read more

Brighton, was originally called Beorthelm’s Tun or farm, after the fifth century Saxon invader, Beorthelm, who made the first settlement on this patch of English coastland. That vast farm, became so big and prosperous, it became a complete town, but all the fishermen lived outside the farm, just a little further east, under the cliffs. The fishing industry thrived and fishermen daily sold their catches on the beach, a custom that continues on a very small scale to this day. Brighton has been a port since the fourteenth century. It was used despite its lack of natural harbour because of the prevailing winds that blew onshore, and the ease of transport to London. At one time it was the quickest London to Paris route. In 1806 a proposal for a wharf along with 50 warehouses and ... read more

I moved to Brighton in 1997, and unlike all the other places I have lived or travelled to, it is largely unexplored by me. As soon as I started to think about this, I realised there is a lot to explore. Brighton is a cultural centre, a seaside resort, a multi university city, has many historical venues, fascinating people, numerous festivals and events, a wide range of flora and fauna, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We don't have any icebergs though! So I decided to write a blog about Brighton. I think it's the most amazing city in England, but maybe I'm just a little bit prejudiced. I'm going to cover a different aspect each time, in no particular order, just wherever my travels around the city take me. The first place most ... read more

How long is it since I have updated this blog? Eons, and I have missed you - and I am sure you have all missed me ... but did any of you get me a publishing deal? No you bloody didn't, so be very grateful I am back! Well, what can I tell you - greyer, wiser (possibly), wider (definitely). In the years since I have last been here, I have held down two jobs ... yes, it surprised me too! I have also joined the local sea kayaking club. I love the sea - I swim in it regularly (in the English channel), I take dozens of photos of it, I walk along the beach, and a few times a month I stagger down Kemptown's pebble beach carrying a kayak, eventually make it into the ... read more

Today was a day trip to Brighton, about a 1 hour train ride south of London. George IV at age 19 decided to move down to Brighton and over many years developed Brighton Pavilion. When he took over from his father as King, he got Nash to work on the building and incorporate new ideas and enhance his seaside retreat. The Pavilion played an important role in his society engagements. After George IV departed, Queen Victoria found the function of the Pavilion (batchelor pad) less appealing to her family of 9. She extracted all the furniture and items that appealed to her and then sold Brighton Pavilion to the local council. The council has worked to restore this amazing building to be the similar to how George IV and Nash intended. In the tradition of George ... read more

It was pouring rain in Cardiff when we woke up (what happened to summer, UK??) so we were a little worried about what the weather would be like when we got to Briighton. After breakfast we caught a taxi to the train station and then the 8:55am train to London Paddington Station. We got to Paddington at 11:02am and had 42 minutes to get the tube from there to Farringdon Station. The tubes run quite frequently so we only had to wait about 4 minutes for the Hammersmith & City (pink) line, and we arrived at the train station by about 11:30am, giving us time to spare. The train to Brighton was almost empty so we had plenty of room to relax (even though the view between London and Brighton isn’t exactly scenic). We arrived in ... read more

The journey has begun We have officially begun touring Europe!! WooHoo! We picked up the van in London and Shane had an extremely stressful driving experience. Driving on the wrong side of the road, while sitting on the wrong side of the vehicle, shifting with his left hand in a large van in London which has the narrowest streets possible and the fastest most impatient drivers. Luckily we negotiated and managed to get 50 pounds off the van price as well as a TomTom (GPS) with western European maps. The TomTom was necessary in London..otherwise we would still be there... After leaving London we decided to drive to Kent, which seemed lovely in a movie we saw once about some tennis players and their balls.....unfortunately TomTom got confused (or we did!) and we ended up ... read more

Leaving Dallas was very hard. The three weeks we spent there were so much fun and we felt like we were spoilt rotten, it was lovely! Donna took us to the airport and we parted ways, heading for our flight to Washington DC. At this point, we really didn't want to leave and we were very thankful that Donna had been so good to us. Basically, the day didn't go too well. Our flight was delayed, they kept changing gate, we didn't even get to sit next to eachother and the hostel that we had booked for DC emailed us saying they had expected us the night before.... Yes, today was going to be a good day. The flight wasn't too bad and when we arrived in Washington DC we went straight to the Information desk, ... read more

Today was going to be our most relaxing day of the tour so far. Although late nights for 95% of the team meant that the 8 o’clock start was not welcome, everyone clambered onto the bus. Our first stop was Hambledon, a small village with a cricket oval. It was here that the rules for cricket were first drawn up and has a place in sporting history as the original home of cricket. Around the pub that the committee meetings were held there were paintings and drawings of the original games to be played out on the Broadhalfpenny oval (The Hambledon oval). It was interesting to see the origins of the game that has taken us so far across the world and cost our parents so much money over the years. Next we got back on ... read more
