We're off to India

Los Angeles Having left the positively horizontal lifestyle of Raratonga, we boarded the plane to LA and expected things to be manic, bureaucratic, and stressful. A couple of sleeping tablets gave us a very good nights sleep and we awoke ready to face the nightmare…. But the nightmare never came – after leaving the plane, passport control and customs were smooth and sensible, our baggage came through quickly and the bus took us straight to the hire car company. At the car hire company, the lady asked if we wanted to upgrade our economy car to a convertible for $10 a day, so we thought ‘sure, why not?’. Five minutes later we were sat in a brand new convertible Mustang! Sun high in the sky, top down crusing through LA, we couldn’t believe our luck! I ... read more

Raratonga To conclude of our round the world trip, we decide to treat ourselves to some relaxation before returning to the world trip. The Cook Islands are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are a long long way from the UK, so we are unlikely to visit them again so took nine days to experience the Islander’s lifestyle in full. We arrived at Raratonga airport to find an old guy in a Hawaiian shirt (well I guess it’s and Islander thing) playing a guitar and singing tropical, Polynesian songs to us as we queued for customs and to collect our bags. I had already found and booked a well recommended guesthouse on Trip Advisor called Aremango, all the reviews had raved about it and it was only thirty quid a night for a kingsize room ... read more

New Zealand.... Part Two! After a lay-in, we hit the road and headed toward Milford Sound, famous for the most amazing scenery in the whole of New Zealand. Quite a challenge, we thought. We passed Te Anau and found a quiet spot on a DOC site by Lake Te Anau, a bit of a surreal one because it was in the forest but literally on the waters edge, with waves crashing in a few feet from the front of the van. It was also rather surreal as the site had enormous orange and white spotted magic mushrooms everywhere; which looked quite familiar after watching Alice in Wonderland…. and the only other camper there was a converted bus which looked like a cross between a wooden sailing ship, a flower-filled cottage, and a space ship - it ... read more

WELCOME TO NEW ZEALAND! We had a great flight with Singapore Airlines, and although we only got a couple of hours sleep, the outstanding entertainment system (and the free Singapore Slings) meant we had a very enjoyable night flight. We tried not to notice the git who had an entire aisle to himself and was sleeping horizontal, away with the fairies. The cabbie who took us into Auckland town gave us a mini-itinerary whilst excitedly telling us about all the different varieties of crops that many kiwis were harvesting this autumn. We picked up our campervan, which was beautifully custom painted in flowers (much to Rachel's delight!), and headed straight out of the city and hit the New Zealand countryside. Driving on no sleep was fairly easy in our relaxed auto-transmission camper, and we made it ... read more

We had an early flight from Singapore and by lunch time we had dumped our bags at the backpackers (bunk beds for the 5th night in a row, yay!) and we were sampling the gastronomical delights of the local hawkers stalls of Kota Kinabalu. We hopped on a moving local bus and hung on for dear life (half out of the door, true indian-style!) and got off at the Sabah museum to get some culture and understand a bit about the history of this part of Borneo. We walked down an overgrown pathway leadin to a rusty old gate... This place didn't look very open... The old ticket office was closed and empty. Hmmmm.... Wandering around the side of the building however, we found much more life, a full carpark and a brand spanking new ticket office. ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India March 26th 2010

Singapore!   We left Japan ready to embrace warmer climates - we’d both had colds since being in Japan and although Singapore was renowned for rain, we didn’t care - it was 30° and we were armed with waterproofs and umbrellas.  The torrential rain that greeted us at the airport was a bit of a shock, but Singapore is designed for rain and we made it to our backpacker hostel pretty dry thanks to all the underpasses and shopping malls on route.  We were staying in Little India, which was brilliant because it was just like being in India (ie all the awesome range of food), but it was clean!  And slightly surreal with all the different cultures (Chinese, India, Malay & Westerners) blended together, seeing a Chinese old man tucking into malasa dosai, and South ... read more

Asia » Japan March 12th 2010

Wow, was like entering a different world! There’s the obvious differences of race and language, the futuristic and bizarre buildings and vehicles, and then the smaller differences in attitude, wanting to help. We got smiles from immigration just for trying to say Ohio gozaimas (good morning), two girls stopping to help us at the train ticket machine who even went as far as to text our journey onto their phone to check the route and price. The attitude and respect is very different - a girl sat near us had her bag taking up a seat on a busy commuter train and a man was standing nearby., A middle-aged woman who was already seated stood up, sternly spoke to her (despite having all her friends around). There weren’t any stabbings involved, and after girlie grunting and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao March 5th 2010

After the seclusion of bottle beach in Koh Pha Ngan we decided to stay somewhere a bit more mainstream in Koh Tao. We'd been recommended a dive school by some random Irish guys that we met in a songthaew so we thought we'd follow their advice and ended up at Sairee Hut Dive School. Through our 5 nights on Tao we changed rooms three times but we stuck with the dive school. They seemed to know what they were doing but were really chilled out and relaxed at the same time. And strangely enough one of the main dive instructors, Neil, is from Harefield (the village my mum grew up in) and his Dad used to work for my Grandad! Small world hey! We started our diving almost immediately with a 7.30 start the following morning. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan February 28th 2010

With the all of the family shenanigans drawn to a close, we returned to the world of backpacking and crossed the road (literally) to accommodation more suited to the travellers pocket. But since we’d already made a decision to continue our travels at the flash-packer end of the market, we took the budget hotels most expensive air-con room. It was amazing. We had bedsheets, toilet paper, even a range of hair-care products. And breakfast thrown in for good measure. This is the life! Skip and Fluffy had already travelled to Koh Phangan, and this was our next destination. We prayed that it would have less of the commercial easy-life tourism that had made our wedding so easy, yet removed us from travelling so far. And Bottle Beach proved to be just that. We took a ferry, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui February 18th 2010

Koh Samui! We woke up (again) at the ridiculous hour of 4.30am from our guesthouse in Kuala Lumpa and brewed a cuppa to get the brain functioning enough to pack and get into the taxi... which at 4.55 we discover hadn't actually been booked! Somewhere along the line, the asking of "can you arrange a taxi" and the answer of "ok pickup is at 5am", the happy-go-lucky receptionist negated to actually call the cabbie! Fortunately, their driver was awake and in the area, so after 10 minutes of pacing around, he wizzed up to the hostel, threw our bags in, and drove at breakneck speed across KL weaving and undertaking cars, trucks, motorcycles and even an ambulance! Needless to say, we arrived in time to check in and go grab a much needed Mcdonalds breakfast! A ... read more
