Geo: 50.8209, -0.139846 Brighton is in Sussex and it is weekend getaway for Londoners since many years, it takes less than an hour from London to Brighton station by train. Places to see are the Royal Pavilion, Brighton beach, Brighton pier, the lanes, museums. Also it is popular with young people for clubbing, sports etc. We arrived early in the morning to Brighton from London Victoria, bought a day bus pass and took the bus 12x to Eastbourne via Beachy head, this ride is lovely as it passes the coastline with brilliant views of the cliffs, sea, Beachy head. We walked the pier at Eastbourne and then took the bus 12x back to Brighton Pier. We walked the Brighton pier, had chips, ice cream and we took the bus 77 to Devil's Dyke. It is very ... read more

While pottering along the coast at the weekend I noticed that the Masthead VHF aerial had fallen over having a distinctly detrimental effect on the radio.......There was nothing else to do but send Samantha up the mast to fix it !!! (who said chivalry was dead?). Unfortunately it was beyond repair and needed replacing, unfortunately this also meant that I had to go up with Sam working up a warm glow on the winch. Whilst I am not afraid of heights I was very afraid of Sam on the winch, whilst I went up very slowly I wasn't sure at the rate of knots that I would plummet to the deck. As you can see, my fears were unfounded as I am still able to type.... and the radio works ! Looking forward to leaving for ... read more

As you look out of the train windows, it looks to me like what I imagine the densely populated landscape of somewhere like Rio to look like- there are just masses of houses piled upon hills and upon each other. And because the landscape is not flat but undulates, the effect is that much more dramatic because the eye can take in more. Sometimes the early morning sun rises with the houses and it's really quite something to watch. You then enter Brighton station. This is one of my favourite train stations (stay with me, this is going somewhere, promise...) It is, for some reason, romantic. In my mind it is from a time long ago, when getting on a train meant a long absence, and you really meant 'goodbye.' I see steam and bags of ... read more

Well, it has been quite an interesting last 6 weeks for me, especially when one looks at the last two blogs entry. Before I get carried away, there are three things I feel need clarity. First, I am not a tourist; I am an international student, so the idea of using a travel blog was not a good one. Second, I was wrong if I was going to come to one of the most reputable institution such as Institution of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and only put 30 per cent of my time to get a Master degree, the opposite has happen so far, and it seems likely that this will the trend going forward. And lastly, the idea of sitting in a front of computer and write more than 1000 which is ... read more

Hi all, Last blog because I said I would write one more and so that I didn't end on 13 blogs but 14 instead! I have now been back just over a week, it's lovely to be back in the UK. I have done a lot of travelling i the last week, 7 flights! My last day in Gambia was a nice day but a bit disappointing as the weather wasn't so great. I had been hoping for sunshine so I could spend my last day on the beach but it was pretty grey. I went to Bakau one last time to pick up my bag from the tailor this time it was finished thankfully. I then spent most of the day packing before meeting everyone to go out for dinner. We went to a restaurant ... read more

In the UK right, and then what? Well in planning my stay here in Brighton I thought to myself 50 per cent travelling UK and Europe in cheap airlines and train, 30 per cent meeting people from everywhere and ofcoz 20 per cent studying. I know it supposed to be the other way round but I have it that way because ' I CAN'. So what has happened after a week in Brighton? Well first thing first, the scope of work looks terrible at first I thought they knew I have only dedicated 20 per cent of my time on studies so they were intentionally trying to interrupt that. But they are not actually, that is how they do their business. So there will be lot, lots and lots of studies to get through before one ... read more

The Journey begins way before I received one-way ticket on the 12th of September from the American Express on behalf of the World Bank. The Journey begin in 2011 when I decided that in 2012 it will be nice if I can further my studies somewhere overseas, Spain, UK or even Australia who know. To cut the long and administration depressing story short, today I find myself sitting at a small part of UK, hour 30 minutes from London, Brighton or East Sussex, at the University of Sussex. How did I know about this place, laugh out loud (lol), "Dream deferred", Former President Thabo Mbeki studied here. Anyway, back to why I decided to write this blog today, well I would like to believe there are few people who would like to know how are things ... read more

After my first round of exams I went to Brigton with John, Adrienne, Hollie, Dakin and Ben. We nearly got everyone on the train, but Dakin and Ben had ticket issues so we had to meet them there. At the time my friends and I were on a phase of playing lots of card games, so the train ride went very quickly. Once we all arrived in Brighton, we checked into our hostel and then headed to the peir. It was a beautiful day but slightly chilly. We went to the arcade and ended up spending a ton of time there! I ended up winning temporary tatoos and a boncy ball (that my friend later accidentally lost). We then went to the end of the pier and went on different rides. We had a really great ... read more

4pm, 1st March - 3rd March: Heathrow to Mumbai (or somewhere near) George:(Written in the present (continuous?) tense, in homage to Private Peaceful by Michael Morpugo and Antony Browne’s “The Shape Game”). We get in a taxi and Max wants to come; Dad claims he only wants to come so he can steal his hat. We get on a few trains that will take us to Heathrow; at Heathrow we board a plane with three aisles instead of two. The plane takes us to India, Mumbai. A taxi-man takes us to a hotel called Manoribel on the edge of town – on the journey there are plenty of multi-coloured lorries and hooting – the hotel is wonderful and it has a great playground. We go down to the sea, we splash about in the waves ... read more

After a few hours of train hopping, I made it to Brighton. The buildings were much nicer than Dover and the shops were a lot more interesting. I walked to the Royal Pavillion first. It was so tacky. Apparently a royla had had a fascination with Asia so he built a palace that was a mixmatch of a bunch of Asian styles. It's so odd sitting in the middle of a bunch of British buildings. Next was the Brighton Museum. Like the Pavillion, it was a total mixmatch exept instead of architecture it was exhibits. They had ancient Egypt, 20th century art, Brighton history, fashion, and performance costumes. Such an odd collection. Then I went to the Pier. It was pretty much a carnival; a bunch of rides and fair food crammed onto the wooden pier. ... read more
