I should be packing. I've been meaning to blog about my last weekend trip away but I've been so busy with work and preparing for an upcoming trip that it's been slightly pushed aside. So here it is complete with photos and I promise not to let the next slip by with nothing... After my day trip out to Stonehenge and Bath, I booked a weekend away to Brighton to check out as I've always heard nice things. As much as I do love London, it's also been lovely to get out of the city now and then. The hustle and bustle can be exhausting at times but I also consider myself lucky to be surrounded by so many things to do. As well as being so close to new places to visit and explore. And ... read more

We picked up our home on wheels from Reading, a Mercedes Sprinter conversion and set off to visit High Clere Castle, the residence used for the filming of Downton Abbey, one of our favourite TV series but unfortunately it was closed to the public which was a bit of a bummer as we were right at the gates and so close! Then as it always does in England it started to rain heavily with lightning filling the sky just as we headed towards Stonehenge, something that has been on my bucket list for a while. The distance on the road maps between towns takes next to no time to travel and before we knew it we were zooming past these impressive stones watching people staring at them with the rain bucketing down so I quickly agreed ... read more

We got up early and took the first bus to a small village, Brighstone. We had been told it was a very pictuesque bus ride. The return bus schedule was such that we could grab breakfast and then walk the village. Breakfast ended up only what we could get at a small grocery store, as things don't up early here in England. The St. Mary's Church is medieval dating from the twelfth century. The short tower contains a ring of 6 bells all cast by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1961. The spire was added in the 17th century. On the drive to Brighton, we stopped in the town of Chichester, a quaint town with a historic cathedral with a remarkable history. Chichester Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, is the seat ... read more

History lesson: Today is the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. Cool to be here on such a momentous day. Today was another bucket list day, as Andrew and I visited Brighton, the setting for The Who's Quadrophenia album. Despite some delays on the part of the British rail service at the start, the trip took less than an hour, and we were at the Brighton station by 1130. It was cool -- around 60 -- and cloudy at first, but as Andrew and I walked down the hill through the center of town (stopping briefly at Hobgoblin Music store, where Andrew played several guitars), the skies slowly cleared. By the time we reached the beach, it was a beautiful sunny day. The channel water was a beautiful blue, the sky was filled ... read more

The alarm was most unpleasant and went off less than 2 1/2 hours after we went to sleep. I tried to get out of bed a few times but my head was lead. I'm not sure how I managed it in the end but it was clear that I was being punished for the big night out. Nik (legend that he is) was downstairs at 0500 as he had promised and looked marginally better than I felt... must have been the whiskey he poured into my glass I reckon. Checking in at Amsterdam was easy and two bacon and egg muffins improved my state slightly. As we had booked Easy Jet, there was no lounge for me to sleep in waiting for the flight and we spent 20 minutes standing in the queue to board. I ... read more

Thursday 5th June Living here I am getting used to the ever changing weather. Having to wear multiple layers each day to strip off and add more as the day weather continues in its indecisive behaviour. I woke this morning to the most beautiful day. Actually I woke up at 4:30am which is not very pleasant, but the sun comes up at that time! Here we have approximately 16.5hrs of sunlight a day (normally 4:30am-9:30pm). A contrast from Canberra's winter 9.5hrs! It does make it easier to wake early. I seem to wake at 6am feeling alert and energised which is not a feeling I have ever felt in Australia at 6am! Waking up to a lovely summer English day I set out on the bus to Brighton. The ride took 1.5hrs along tiny little roads ... read more

We Brits love to complain about the weather. We have a lot of weather to complain about. When it's wet and windy, we complain that it's too wet and windy. When it's cold and gloomy, we moan about it being cold and gloomy. When it's hot and sunny, we moan about it being too... you get the idea. Today, in the middle of the month of May, the sun was shining. So my wife took me to Brighton. It was actually a belated birthday present. My birthday was in March, but it was wet and windy, so we didn't go. We just moaned about it being too wet and windy. Fortunately, although it was sunny today, it wasn't hot. There wasn't even a mention of wet, windy or gloomy in the weather forecast. So, as we ... read more

Geo: 50.8209, -0.139846We arrived in Brighton in a dreadful weather. You know that kind of drizzled and wind that just makes you feel miserable. Anyways, we went first to Andrew's new school to store all his stuffs in a cupboard. Brighton College looks nothing like a school to me, at least from the outside, then classrooms are like one would expect. The building are made of black bricks with windows in white sculpted stone, and there is a chapel in the middle. Really amazing for a school. After that we met with Gwen and went to check in in our hostel. It is opposite the pier with a bar on the ground floor. I can now say that this bar was very popular (for some unclear reasons) and thus the all hostel was a party hostel ... read more

Day 36 – Brighton We’re back to dreary weather. Heading to Brighton which is supposed to be an awesome seaside town and it’s cold, wet and windy. Just great. Luckily Brighton has amazing shopping. They have these awesome laneways with all types of weird and wonderful shops. I found one crazy shop where I could have bought one of everything. Eventually the weather began to clear a little and we could head to the Brighton Pier for a looksie. Still freezing though. Come back sun. Day 37 – Heathrow We returned the car today. No more driving for me until September. I was ready to give it back though. I was getting a bruised heel from resting my foot on the car floor for hours at a time. Wearing thongs probably didn’t ... read more
