We planned to visit Padstow by bus on 21st September. The hotelier also said good things about the bus. Mark had checked the bus timetable and we were to take the bus from near our hotel. I had written postcards for two people in Japan; we went to the post office before catching the bus. I was a little surprised that postage fees have been risen quite a lot. We took the 10:39 open Decker bus for Padstow. The friendly bus driver did complimentary guide for passengers through the journey, although he had to drive through narrow, winding paths from time to time. The bus went through Porth Beach, Watergate Bay & Beach and Porthcothen Bay. We popped in the tourist information centre after getting off the bus. I found the leaflet of ‘historic trail’ in ... read more

Yes we have been in Padstow for 3 days! We walked out today and to a place called Porthcothan which is pronounced like ‘poor cousin’ but with a bit of a lisp and a coarse, gravelly voice. Suffice to say nobody knows of it (even around here) and because accomodation is scarce there we are back again in the ‘Old Ship’ for another night. After walking 19km the taxi got us back here in 15 minutes! A little soul destroying and sole destroying! Yes we went to Rick Steins signature restaurant last night. Julie had scallops and then salmon and I had the fish and shell fish soup (flavoured with tomato and saffron) followed by the Malaysian fish curry (one of the signature dishes here). The restaurant is sumptuous and elegant although the clientele dress standards ... read more

Padstow or because Rick Stein is so ubiquitous and omnipresent here it is referred to as Padstein! I have enjoyed his pasty significantly more than I thought I would. His recipe stated he uses swede but I’m pretty sure it was parsnip with meat pieces. The meat is cut not minced and it was pleasantly peppered so I thought the pasty was very good. Pasties are everywhere here, there are 3 consecutive shops all selling baked goods and all specialising in ‘real Cornish pasties’. They are all in Mill Square, Padstow, Cornwall so their claims may be legitimate. Everyone here has a pasty, an ice-cream or some fish and chips. As far as I know Rick Stein does not make ice cream although he does sell it. The line at his fish and chip deli was ... read more

Heading away from the legend of King Arthur and the tacky tourist stuff that accompanies him. It cost £20 to enter and really most of the complex is in ruins except for the new bridge which is spectacular and the ‘Arthurian’ sculpture that we glimpsed from afar. We were lucky to get so close to the bridge and that was only because we were early and the ticket booth had not opened. We just went in until they came then obviously left. There was a small grass fire right on the path which the fire fighters were busy making safe and putting out. We thought it quite insignificant but you can see smoke in some of the photos and the smoke was clearly visible for miles (literally) and even the day after it was still visible ... read more

Yesterday started off well. We walked into Padstow and I had a day at Rick Stein's cookery school. I have done a cooking class there before but this time due to the pandemic it was a tad different. You were not allowed to leave your work station without wearing a mask. You had to see most of the things the Chef was telling you via a screen which if I am honest 2 rows back and one dodgy cataract it was a little difficult. To be honest though if two people from the same family went they shared a work station and also shared a fish so not great value, or chance to try stuff. So the first dish was Dover Sole a la meunière which if you remember in one of my blogs I had ... read more

Well, really sorry about the blog yesterday or the lack of it. Well yesterday I thought I was a fish as I have never been as wet and if I am totally honest it was cold as well. So when we got back to the Motorhome we got out of our soaking wet clothes chucked them in the garage and put the heating on to try and dry out. Was worrying that today was going to be the same - so really happy when we woke up that the sun was shining - mind you the winds are still cool - however, cannot complain - well this is Paula and she can complain! We had a light breakfast as we had booked into Rick Stein's for lunch. As I was going to be wearing shoes with ... read more

So day two of our Motorhome adventure and being such a rookie found out that the Cathago motorhome facebook people are amazing. All I do is when I do not know what to do like turning the radio off, sorting the waste water out, they are there giving me advice immediately. I think they are thinking is she for real or what, ha ha. Anyway with having to take drops for my eyes as having had a cataract op on my left eye, yes I still need to look at my hands to identify which is my left eye and having an op on this eye you would think this would not be necessary, hey ho you are talking about Paula here. How stupid I always get Mike to read through and he has said which ... read more

My ex work colleague, Elaine aka Por Por (Cantonese nickname), who I keep in touch with decides to come over from Hong Kong and stay with another ex work colleague, Joanna, who lives in London. I had promised Elaine a road trip next time she visited the UK, and I'm a man who keeps his promises. After spending her first night in London, Elaine catches a fast train with Joanna out of London to Reading where I pick them both up for Por Por adventures to begin. Bath Our first destination is the beautiful city called Bath, which is situated in the county of Somerset. This city gets it's name due to Roman built baths that date back to AD 60 and is the main tourist attraction of the city. The Romans discovered the hot springs ... read more

A cheeky week in Cornwall long after the summer holidays actually worked out well. Nice quiet holiday let with pool onsite and a short walk to the beach. No hordes of tourists, and inspite of the time of year we had great weather ! So good that we went swimming in the sea! Lots of fun had by all and a great reminder of how amazing Cornwall is, and also how close it is too!... read more

For those of you that don't know (and there won't be many), I spend the summer in Cornwall. And what a magnificent summer we had this year! The weather was unbelievable, lots of dry, sunny days with hardly any wind. I managed to get lots of fantastic walks completed, training, ready for my trek through The Himalayas in November. The coastal path throughout Cornwall is very scenic and beautiful. Some parts of it are more difficult than others. Over the years, I have managed to complete a fair part of the north Cornwall path. From Tintagel, right the way down to Perranporth and a little bit around Porthtreath. Lots of the path, we have walked time and time again. My day always started off walking around the headland where we stay, Treyarnon, which is a stunning, ... read more
