I think the reality of what we have ahead of us is very slowly starting to sink in. We spent last weekend throwing away stuff from the house that we won't be taking with us - we ended up with 15 black bin bags full!! I just can't picture me, Doug and the dogs living in Australia yet - it feels like a bit of a dream! Doug's works have been great and will work around him when he wants to go. We have started to tell people now as well what we are doing and have got very mixed reactions from 'Good On Yer!' to 'What are you doing that for!' We had the quote to get the dogs out from a doggie travel agency (how cool is that!) and it looks like it is ... read more

Well, after all the years of 'shall we... maybe....i'm not sure...what if?' we finally have our visa for Australia ... and now I am scared! We have visited Oz 4 times in the past 6 years and fell in love with the place a little more each time. Over the years we have travelled all over but really felt at home in Australia. So in 2004 decided that we should migrate over to Perth and we finally got the visa on 26th January 2007 (weirdly enough Australia Day!). So now begins the trauma of selling houses, giving up jobs, arranging for our 2 dogs to be sent over and quarantined ... along with saying goodbye to family and friends - it all doesn't seem real at the moment. I have decided that life is too short ... read more

Well here's a turn up for the books, we are no longer in South America as the title may have given away. There are a number of reasons for our early departure from this part of the world but by far the dumbest is the simple fact that we failed to cancel an internal flight and the kind people at Lan airways took it upon themselves to cancel all of our onward flights including the incredibly overbooked leg from Santiago to Auckland. Long story short, we would have been stuck in South America for much longer than planned or budgeted for so we bailed. Having seen Macchu Pichu and countless other wonderous things I felt satisfied that we had made a decent fist of our first trip to South America. We couldn't afford the Galapagos and ... read more

Today, I have done more stuff Booked hostel in some other places, cancelled phone contract, moved clothes around my room so it looks like i've packed, and managed to fluke my contact lenses being here on time. Apparently they never come this fast normally. Super. Around lunchtime lost all my travellers cheques and dad found them under some darts in the garage a few hours later. This prompted to me to start an 'important documents folder'. I've put my insurance details in there as well. I've been advised by various third parties that they are more useful there than in a pile of laundry on top of my drawers.... read more

Back at home now, and have read the "safety for travellers book" mum got me. Related the chapter on deadly australian box jellyfish to said mum, who suggested i went to somewhere sensible like france for a month. Things i've done 1) Got a passport yesterday (emergency one as mine wasn't valid and i hadn't checked) 2) Got a visa for Australia (didn't know I needed one until yesterday, got one this morning) 3) Got all my jabs and medicines. Just. 4) Transferred some money to useful currencies. don't know what they use in South America though. may buy a goat at the airport for trading purposes. 5) Booked somewhere to stay in Australia (My hotel). Am no longer sleeping rough I don't think. Haven't got anything confirmed by them though and was quite a suspect ... read more

I joined Lara on a trip to the North of England and visited Sandbach. I was introduced to the town crier and saw some very exciting Saxon Crosses - they're also quite big as the photo shows!... read more

With every departure their HAS to be a leaving party surely. That’s the way I look at things anyway and consequently this week, prior to my going away, seems to have been just that, one big party. Things got underway on Wednesday. Having said my goodbye’s earlier in the day to my wonderful colleagues who generosity provided me with the camera that has taken the snaps on this blog, it was my last opportunity to bid au revoir to all my piglets. For those of you unaware of the name Metal Pig (shame on you), it is the weekly rock night I founded over six years ago in Chester and which has taken up every Wednesday night, holidays excluded, ever since. During those years I’ve made formed some good friendships, albeit with people a generation younger ... read more

Well folks, its time for another installment of the debarcle that is my life. When we left off it was riding high in South Carolina, well i've changed continents and settled on colder weather but believe me, ive hit the jackpot!! Things didnt start off to well, getting the JFK a full 12 hours before my flight was due to depart, and the extra time I thought I could waste checking in, took all of 2 minutes. After asking for an exit row seat, and being told ' man your here so early, you can have any damn seat you want', i decided that it was time to see the city for one last time. The day was then spent walking round one of my fave cities, and visiting some places that mean a lot to ... read more

Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot... Every year on November 5th the British fire off fireworks amounting to the GDP of a small African nation, and burn an effigy on a bonfire. It sounds a bit sadistic and, as an outsider, it definitely appears to be that way. But the roots go back hundreds of years. http://www.rhymes.org.uk/remember_remember_the_5th_november.htm This year's bonfire in Knutsford was a biggie.... read more
