Learning from our last weekend away (missing the train to Brussels!), we set our alarms for 4:40am so that we could leave the house at 5:20am. We needed to catch a bus from Chatham where we live, to the train station in Strood as there were engineer works on the train tracks inbetween. So we got to London on time and even had a chance to sit down and relax before we got on the Virgin Train that would take us to Runcorn Station. It was a 3 hour train ride, but the train was quite nice and new. We had our Ipods and books to amuse us and the trip didn't seem to take long at all. I couldn't see much of the country-side on the way up North as we weren't near a good ... read more

Hey everybody, Well it's now Boxing Day and Christmas 2005 is now over. We unfortunately didn't have a white Christmas, but we did try to make it as traditional and special as possible. We opened pressies in the morning, got dressed up (well I did anyway!) and baked a turkey with roast potatoes. It was delicious! Oh and Wes' tabouli. We were both spoilt with pressies - in fact we both received similar presents....We both received a new coat (courtesy of Santa), some books (mysteries for me, cook books for Wes!), a game (a puzzle for me, 11 games in one for Wes, including backgammon - his favourite), a new shirt each, and some more clothes for me and some cash from Wes' parents. Oh Wes also received a yoga DVD! Can't wait to see him ... read more

Just thought I'd write a test blog to see if it's all set up right to be honest as I can't be arsed faffing around in some internet cafe in the back of beyond trying to get my account sorted! It's exactly a week tomorrow till I set off on my trip which will take me all round China, SE Asia and finally Oz so it should be a buzz I reckon (assuming I don't blitz my cash on beer and stuff within the first 4 months). lol Hopefully I'll get chance to add bits to this diary fairly regularly once I get out on the road but you never know how it's gonna be until you get there do you? For all I know I might be that busy ballooning round everywhere I hardly ever ... read more

Coming from a family that has always had strong connections with railways, I have always had an interest in trains from being a small child. Therefore I suppose it was only natural that I would always have a fascination about what it would be like to travel on the world's longest railway journey, the 'Trans-Siberian'. This was probably fueled in the last few years by watching with envy the travels of Michael Palin in his many BBC TV programmes taking unusual journeys across the globe. The 'Trans-Siberian Railway' is a working railway and in fact one of the busiest in the world for both passengers and freight across the entire length of Russia. At this stage lets dispel the myth that there is an actual train called the 'Trans-Siberian Express'. The Trans-Siberian is a railway and ... read more

Whoever said that the east of Europe is catching up with the west at a rapid rate was singularly on his own expressing this opinion.... we arrived in Prague last Saturday night. For booze mentalists and stag weekenders this journey has seemingly become the road to el dorado. Quite frankly the place is full of drunks and whores. To put it mildly.... and truthfully. There are places of interest and there is plenty to do, but I'm of the inate belief that a city as overrun with casinos, strip joints and brits is in a state of terminal freefall, although the rooms at the holiday inn were very pleasant..... and they have good taste in cured meats. So after a few days in 'fabulous' Praha, it was all aboard the Night Train to Budapest. Not being ... read more

I wish I had known about this earlier! Here I am, 4 1/2 months into my stay in the UK, and I could have been keeping a journal the whole time. I will try to start from the beginning. I left the USA on the 29th of December, 2004 to come to the UK. My reason for coming was a matter of the heart, and I found myself free of that reason after a few weeks here, and with a freedom to do anything I wanted. Around the same time I was offered a job in Chester. At the time I was living in the south in a suburb of London. "Chester? Where in the world is Chester?" Well, it turns out Chester is just about the coolest little town I could have found myself accidentally ... read more

Back by popular demand (ahem), I decided to update my blog, hopefully I will be resuming it from somewhere a little more tropical than Poynton in the future, but Poynton is as much excitement as I need for now. I am well on the mend, as is my friend Annecy, slowly. She came up to visit and we went out for dinner and much sparkly to celebrate and toast our continued road to recovery, it was great to see her out of a hospital bed and with both of us wearing slightly more fetching outfits than green hospital gowns. I have some horrid exercises to do for my fractured right shoulder, I thought the Physio was trying to make me do something completely unnatural to my poor arm at first and then I realised it was ... read more

I just wanted to write a blog as I have had a few emails coming in asking as to my safety and whereabouts after the terrible disaster that has struck Asia. I am one very very lucky lady and still alive, as is my friend which I am so very grateful for after a very terrifying 2 days before I found her. I have only been home now for a few days and apologise for not being able to update this sooner. My friend and I were in our bunglaow as the wave hit us and carried us off with it, destroying our bungalow and most other things in its path, amazingly we both managed to get out of the water eventually and climb to safety. We are both suffering some injuries but are well on ... read more
