Hello everyone! As everyone who has been in earshot of me in the last 3 months will know I am off to Oz for a year, and it has got scarily close now - I leave on Monday! I am still very very very excited but the nerves are kicking in a little now. I dreamt I got lost at the airport last night - not good! Today I am doing all the boring stuff like updating my CV, scanning documents and practice packing, again. This is why I thought I'd do a practice post here to see if everything works okay. Thanks again to everyone who has made my social calender so busy in the last 3 months. I have had 3 great official leaving nights out and countless meals, drinks and days out. ... read more

Greetings from the greenest place on Earth!! My stay in the UK has almost ended, but my last week in Tarvin (& area!) has been fabulous. Some highlights: - Made a dent in a few of the traditional English country pubs with Kate & her friends - Nearly getting run over by a few thousand pedestrians dressed to the nines on their way to the derby (or "darby" as it's pronounced here!) - Riding the ferry to Liverpool & visiting the Beatles museum - Afternoon champagne at the Grovenor ( . . . funny how I drink champagne once in a blue moon in Canada but have had it three times in one week here!) - Gorgeous drive through the hilly countryside full of green fields filled with sheep as far as the eye can ... read more

Just a quick note before I leave as no one really wants to know about the goings on in Runcorn The 1st may is rapidly approaching and I think i'm 99% ready to go. I'm pretty sure i've got all the stuff i need but i'm not looking forward to trying to pack it all in. Also I have decided my attempt to learn very basic Japanese is usless as well so am expecting to get lost (only joking mum) and be really annoying by pointing at things. I'm sure it will make my trip more exciting Well keep you updated when more interesting things happen xx... read more

I wasn’t planning to write in my blog so soon - apologies if this is boring, but I suppose the planning stages are important too. I am travelling to Newark Airport in New Jersey from Manchester on Wednesday 11th April. Each day that the departure has been getting closer has brought new worries (I am a definite worrier). Booster injections and malaria medication for when we go to Asia, visas, sorting out money (not to mention actually owning a credit card - a definite worry), booking flights and deciding what clothes to take and backpack to buy. Now it’s just the waiting. T-4 days…... read more

On my computer in the kitchen at home We had a BBQ last night at my house, which gave me the chance to see family and friends before I go. Was really nice (even the weather didn’t let me down!) I am starting to feel more excited now - there’s nothing like everybody asking questions to make me think about it all more. Am hoping to go shopping today for some last-minute stuff. Must remember how many people have told me that less is more with this backpacking thing! ... read more

So, three days to go and everything is prety much set. Its now just a matter of squeezing all of my belongings for the next six months into one bag! Not a particularly easy task, but as Vicky has said, its quite liberating! First stop is New York and i can't wait to get on the road (so to speak). I know i will miss everyone at home, but it will be worth it I hope. You can keep up to date with where we are using this link: Route Map Just click on the 'My Map' tag... read more

Well, I still feel like I am stuck in limbo land ... still not sure when we are going. We seem to spend every moment planning and trawling the internet for information! We have decided that we are definately going to Perth and have tracked down an area called Secret Harbour. We have been to Perth twice before and absolutely love the place but never as far down the coast as Secret Harbour so being the control freak I am - the thought of moving to somewhere I have never visited scares the life out of me! On a good note - we went to Crufts in Birmingham last week and found another doggie travel agency who can transport the dogs over for a more reasonable £3k - so just shows how you have to shop ... read more

The Jodrell Bank Visitors Centre is open to the public and allows access to the site of the Radio Telescope - which is set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. There is a cafe and gift shop but no access to the telescope itself which is a pity as this is the main attraction. There is also an arboretum on the site which has many species of trees - but given the size of the telescope one would hope you would be able to see the wood for them.... read more
