I have been in Cambridge for one day. I was unable to get to a computer but in the last couple weeks I traveled from Dublin to Cambridge and met up with my peers. I am living on the same street where Charles Darwin lived while he studied at Cambridge. I also traveled by coach up to Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland. While in Scotland I hiked up a lake encompassed mountain in the Trossachs. I am back home in Cambridge now and it is raining outside. I'm off to get some lunch. - Rob ... read more

The one-day trip we took to Cambridge was lots of fun despite sudden short rain showers and a cloudy sky. We had made a list of things and places we wanted to see before departing and it included the Botanic Garden which once there we decided to skip and of course, punting, which is one of Cambridge's Must-Does. We went round and entered 2 of the many Cambridge Colleges there, Saint John's College and Clare College. Anka and I were really keen on King's College which was unfortunately closed, so we had to settle with taking pictures from outside which was ok in the end. Rented a boat and went punting on River Cam which was a 45 minute relaxing experience. We only wished we had thought to grab a couple of beer cans before ... read more

After a leisurely breakfast, We got doing some school work for a bit, before Rob and Pam showed up. Rob was at University in Grenoble, France with Kirsty and Evy, so this was a reunion of sorts. Evy and I haven't seen Rob since he came through Toronto many years ago and we have never met Pam, his wife. Kirsty brought out photo albums and the three former Grenoble students reminisced over their time there. The plan had been to take a picnic with us and go to a place called Grantchester, but we were all quite content to stay where we were so we ended up doing the picnic on a blanket in the garden. As a surprise Leah and Kirsty had baked a cake and we had an early birthday celebration for Evy. It ... read more

Leah and Caleb both have activities this morning, so we used the time that they were all away to get school work done. When they all returned, we had some lunch before heading off for a walk down to the docks. We stopped by, Welsley college, where Stephen was a student and has also taught, to drop off Caleb's bicycle. At the docks, Stephen had arranged for a boat for us to go punting. Evy and Kirsty chose (perhaps wisely) to stay ashore as only 6 are allowed per boat. The boats that are used for punting are relatively wide, with a flat bottom and square bow and stern. The technique consists of pushing a long pole into the bottom of the river and then using it to propel the boat forward. If you are not ... read more

We got a reasonably good start to the day today, and after packing up, had some time to play in the garden with Rusty before it was time to head out. It felt strange to be saying goodbye to Barbara and this house, not sure when we will see either again. After driving for about 45 minutes, we discovered that we had left both Evy's jacket and her purse (with our passports) behind. We had no choice but to turn around and head back. Barbara had quickly seen that we had left these things behind, but not having our phone number she had no way to contact us. After pondering how long it might be before we saw this place again, here were were back in less than an hour and a half ! Back on ... read more

I have been finding it very difficult to write about our travels in the last few weeks. There is so much I want to write about yet when I start to type I become overwhelmed with everything that we have experienced. It is now officially 3 months since we have left Australia and we have met so many interesting people, experienced so many exotic cultures, heard so many foreign languages…it is hard to express the myriad of emotions and sentiments that we go through on a daily basis. We organised a 2-day trip to Cambridge so that we could visit Litty (my friend from high school) and see her new home and met her new boyfriend Ben. National Express (UK’s major coachline company) were selling £1 tickets to Cambridge as their springtime ‘funfare’ sale, and taking ... read more

Cambridge on a day trip with 6 of my best mates was such a laugh! The weather was great Jemma kindly baked ANZAC biscuits for us all. I still cant believe they let us take our drinks punting, glad they did though it was hilarious. My attempt at punting was for the memory books! my legs would not stop shaking I was rocking the whole boat. Our friends were quite good, although we did seem to crash a few times, I would have prefered to be in the water pushing the boat along without the pole. All said and done a quater of the drink was on us, we didnt fall in and the girls all had to bolt to the bathroom after all the cider we drank. We wondered around the beautiful city laughing, joking, ... read more

Just a day to go. My bags are packed, my affairs are in order. The past 7 months have been building to this moment. In my head the questions spin; do I have the money? what will i make of it? will i really need 2 meters of electrical cable just in case? My only defence against the constant onslaught of doubt, the permanent questions of my own competence to live by my wits, the incessant chatter of my minds voice worrying about every small thing, the what could have beens, the should have beens and what I need to do, my only defence is to block it out. I have coped only so far because of an innate ability to block out the worry, to say shit happens to the oncoming darkness. One line that ... read more

So here we are. 35 hour flight, stuck in Bangladesh airport for 10hrs and no in-flight entertainment we arrived in London yesterday. It still seems unreal. Ray and Hillary (some rallys) picked us up from Heathrow yesterday and it took about 1.5hrs (well it should have if we didnt get lost!) to get to there house in a small village north of London. Its everything you would imagine England to be like here, brick housing, nice cars, freezing cold and of course expensive! Its such a change from South East Asia, its great not being stared at as we walk down the street. Except for Kris having food poisioning from the plane so far we love it. Today we took a bus from Ray and Hillarys' to Cambridge, we have been looking round the shops and ... read more
