Many people of my age (same age as concorde - you do the math) will remember growing up watching emaciated Ethiopian children with pot bellies on the Childrens BBC Newsround program in the 1980’s and 1990’s, with songs like Feed the world and Heal the world making it big in the charts and we all did fun runs, 24hour famines and bring and buy sales to reach that Blue Peter target to send rice to these families, but as young children we always asked the same question “Dad, if they are starving why are they fat?” We now watch Lenny Henry and other comedians every March who make us laugh with their comedy and cry with their pictures of these same children and we phone and donate because we feel guilty for laughing on our comfy ... read more

Hi all, arrived safely home into the UK, the flight was a bit bumpy, not helped by the African lady sitting next to me who was flying for the first time in her life who kept poking me to say "are we nearly there yet?" as she gripped tight onto the seat in front of her... I have just had my Pizza for Joes Friday night Pizza night (Joe makes pizza for us every friday) and I have caught up on my desperate housewives - Priorities, right? Looking back through my pad at work there is a gradual change with my note taking. When I started there was a certain amount of professionalism about it. But as the days passed and the 4th of July grew closer my work was forced from my pages and was replaced with drawings off backpackers, temples, bottles of beer, beaches and a day by day count down. Only 6 days to go, 3 more of work and a weekend with the Uni boys in london. Then comes Monday the 4th. Andrew Neal and I will be boarding at 9:00am and flying for 18 hours (with a brief stop in Mumbai) to Bangkok, the first stop on our tour of Asia! We will be meeting up with Jon Date on the 5th and then Andy Chater-Lea on the ... read more

Although the wedding was the main reason for us all flying over to the UK recently we were very fortunate to see many of our friends and family. With a detailed itinerary and a reliable hired car, infect we had two at one point, we were able to travel a fair few miles, up and down the M4 and the B400! HIlary managed to reunite with colleagues from Priors Court School and enjoyed an evening catching up all the news and changes at the school. She also managed a visit to the school with two colleagues from her school in Brisbane who were eager to see why she went into shock mode when she started to work at Red Hill Special School after experiencing all the facilities and space at Priors Court. Hilary managed to meet ... read more

My last trip was in April and some of you may be wondering what has been happening since I arrived home. We had a Royal wedding in the UK which for those that love the royal family that was wonderful, and for the rest of us it meant an extra day off! This allowed many people across the UK including myself to take 11 working days off but only use 7 days holiday and as it was my birthday Thank you Wills and Kate for that generous birthday gift. We didn’t watch the wedding; instead we went for a walk around the local nature reserve and chilled out in the garden with Joes parents and had dinner with my family. It was a glorious 2 weeks, infact probably the only summer that the UK is going ... read more

Richard and I are setting off on another cruise this weekend. New cruise line for us - P & O ... will the PO start the word POsh or POor? Posh we hope. First time without a balcony but a big window so at least we can see when to run out on deck. New destination - Norway ... lots of lovely cragginess we hope. But meanwhile, we're only going as far as M&S. New clothes on order. Getting seriously excited now. Roll on Saturday.... read more

And we're all set! Good news! Dad got his visa...with 20 minutes to spare....so now he just needs a ticket to get from Almaty to Beijing, hopefully on the same train as us - so that one is now back with Real Russia to arrange as we slowly head that way! I am now packed fully and correctly (hopefully). All set to go tomorrow for the 6:59 from Beaconsfield...pics to follow! Peter, dad and I are now at the did I forget something stage?!!! And if we did it's too late..... So wish us luck, and we'll try to update as we go! Dave... read more

What cameras and associated bits to take?? The next thing....was what camera gear to take...? After the last trip, my first thought was no backpack for the camera - this is something I have been thinking for some time anyway, as backpacks make the changing of lenses and filters so much more time consuming. The question was, what to replace the lowepro backpack with? Eventually I settled on a Crumpler 7 million dollar home. One problem - it's only available in the US....DOH! A colleague was over there, so I bought it blind, hoping it would be right, and as it turned out....yes...it's bloody brilliant! I can fit everything I could in the old backpack, plus some, and it's quicker and easier to use. So, I can easily now take: Canon 5D Mk II body Canon ... read more

All of a sudden it's close! Weirdly, and kind of unexpectedly, it's suddenly almost time to go. Peter & I have passports and all visas. Dad won't know until 3:30 on friday whether he has a chinese visa or not - only just over 12 hours before we go. We're hoping, and keeping everything crossed that his passport returns from the embassy, whether it has a visa or not. At least then he can get to Almaty - if the passport doesn't turn up; Game over. We still have no better ideas as to why his visa was refused initially, but they now seem to be looking more and more closely at the details - addresses on the invitation letter, times of arrival, places to visit, times of departure. All three of us are now packing, ... read more
