We started the day off with a well needed lie in! The group gathered just before 10am at reception and took the usual route to the offices within Gothenburg. As we arrived in the office, we were greeted by a gentleman named ‘Josef Gustafsson’ who began to explain the basics of ‘EU programs and financing’. Some interesting facts about the Vastra Gotaland area which the group took away with them after the session were; · By 2020, the target is to increase employment in the Gothenburg area · Programs and funding uses 1/3 of the EU budget · Less developed regions get awarded proportionally more EU funding than more developed regions, as well as new member states (North East England is classed as "less developed"!) · Budget: 450 million SEK from EU indicator goals · 1299 ... read more

We started the day off in a chilly 2 degrees, we made our way to the offices where we met Magnus, who gave us a presentation on the North Sea commission. The North Sea commission is an organisation that was started to give the coast a voice in European affairs. There is 31 members in 8 different countries and the North Sea is known to be the ‘hottest’ sea in terms of trade. Most of us didn’t even realise it existed, or that Southend-on-Sea is the only English member! Magnus was very excited to know if County Durham would be interested (we said we would find out.) especially as we can be members when we are outside the EU, which could be very beneficial. We asked Magnus more about Sweden and learned that the forests have ... read more

We started the early morning with Irma to discuss the Swedish political system. She told us how Sweden is big on power to the people and how involved the residents are with politics. This includes having 85% of the residents voting in the 2014 regional election - a figure we in the UK can only dream of! Irma then went on to explain exactly how the political system is set up and the levels creating the Swedish Government which was really interesting, but made some of us realise how little we know about the British system... Irma also gave us our first experience of Swedish Fika, which went down very nicely - Paige’s first ever cinnamon experience! We then went off to the train station to travel to Vanersborg (via Starbucks for an expensive taste of ... read more

We got a little bit lost on the way to our offices in the morning, but we made it just before 9! We began by meeting Irma who is going to be our help in getting around and guiding us through our days with information and advice, we sat from 9 till 10:20 talking about what we were going to be doing throughout our stay in this beautiful city. Irma also covered some interesting facts about the city and a little about herself personally and what she does (External Relations). But some interesting facts we were given is that they get an annual budget of 50 billion SEK to fund their council, which is much more than what we have at DCC, but then again they do have a population much greater than Durham! After Irma ... read more

After a much-needed lie in, we decided to go to the Universeum museum today as the weather wasn't very good. We were really impressed by the tropical rainforest zone (but disappointed that the sloths were slothing and wouldn't pose for photographs!) There was also a Space zone and an area with loads of fun facts and activities to do with the human body! On the way back, we stopped at an Italian restaurant for some delicious food and have since been chilling out and doing some reading ready for our first day at the office tomorrow... We are all a bit nervous as we don't really know what to expect, but hopefully we will impress our hosts and start to find out about how things work in local government here in Sweden - watch this space! ... read more

We started the day with an early morning alarm in County Durham. We arrived at the airport for 4:30am and the plane finally departed (after a short delay on the runway!) at 6:45. It was Helen’s first plane ride and she was excited but scared. The plane stewards came round with cheese sandwiches and marble cake (which were lovely) and the time just flew over (pardon the pun!) We arrived in Sweden at 11:30, the pilot announced over the speaker that Gotheburg was cloudy and rainy at 2 degrees - brrrr!! The airport was surprisingly empty, but very modern and it didn't take us long to get through and get our bags. We took a taxi from the airport to the hostel, where we dropped our baggage off and went out to explore the area. We ... read more

Malmo to Gothenburg by train is an unremarkable journey. Arriving around lunchtime, we orienteered our way to the docks where our hotel was moored. Yes, a boat that is a hotel. Boatel. The Hotell Barken Viking is an old schooner repurposed for accommodation, and a job really well done. Some things were a little cramped in our room, but the quality of everything about it was great, at a very reasonable off-season price. Apparently the place rocks over the summer. I was feeling worse again by this stage, and opted to spend an afternoon in bed trying to marshal the antibodies while Helen took off for a ramble around the city, an opportunity to shop without feeling continual pressure either to buy something or move along. She scoped out several shopping and eating options for a ... read more

It's been a fabulous few weeks here in Gothenburg, Sweden. Visiting family and getting to know our 18 month old grandson, Oliver. In fact we have been so busy I haven't written a word about all the sights and experiences we have enjoyed since our arrival here in late July. I have taken numerous photos so I have just chosen a few to illustrate the good times, the events and the family fun times we have been fortunate to enjoy. Three good things: 1. Spending lots of time with Oliver, teaching him some English words and actions to his favourite songs - "The wheels on the bus" kept going round and round and round and round! Fortunately the actions mean the same in Swedish and English. Handy song to sing to calm an 18 month old ... read more
