A day on the high seas - well almost. Christer had us fed well got breakfast then the plan was to go on his boat onto the lake which Karlstad is famous for. We packed a lunch and a few drinks and on our way to destinations unknown. Through town then onto areas that didn’t look like boat places until we came to a river where the boat was moored. A little 21 foot cabin cruiser. A vintage diesel putt putt effort. Got organized and away we went. Very comfortable and re-assured by the skipper, in his skipper hat, that we were safe and sound on his boat. Out through the channel then lots of weeds and into the expanse of lake Vanern. This lake is huge and feeds out into the sea. Christer is taking ... read more

Pick up a hire car today for the Swedish part of our trip. Found the Avis shop and into a relatively new Opel Corsa. A bit smaller than expected but we could fit all of the bags in the boot. That is because we left the big case behind at the hotel as we are coming back there at the end of our trip. Out of town and heading ultimately for Karlstad. This is where Stephanie spent around 10 months on student exchange in 2000. We are staying with her host father, Christa. Unfortunately her host mother died late last year. We stopped at a very old castle which Christer had suggested on the way. Skokloster Castle which was built in the early 1600’s. Very interesting especially how they have used the original furnishings where possible. ... read more

Finally we can start a countdown in weeks 😍 Okay, it's still a little bit longer than 11 weeks, but it feels as if we're almost there. We are so excited to go! 🥳 From now on we will try to add more blogs on this page and keep you posted about all our preparations. And yes, we need to prepare a lot 🥹 The last months we were talking about all our expectations. The weather conditions and all the clothes we have to pack for it 🧳 But also the food. We have to bring our meals and snacks for the whole week 🥣 and actually, it sounds easier than it is. Of course, we travel by car so we can bring a lot and in an easier way than when we would go by ... read more

I DO remember the last time I was in Sweden, but as it was (I think) in 1978 I don't remember everything about it. It was our last family holiday and we spent 2 weeks camping in southern Sweden. Some of this holiday has become legend in Risby family history. The main thing I recall about the trip is that we had been told that bread was incredibly expensive to buy in Sweden. We therefore decided that we would take our own "crispbread" supplies with us from England, as well as most of our other food for cooking in the campsites (eating out was not thought to be an option if we could not afford bread!). To make our diet more interesting we purchased a wide variety of crispbreads so we would not become bored with ... read more

Car wrecks en masse In 2013 Ake visited a car cemetery in Kronoberg County in southern Sweden. After he published a blog entry about that visit he learned that there is at least one other similar site in Sweden. This other one is near Årjäng in Värmland County. The idea of going there to see this car cemetery has been on our minds for a few years. In August 2022 we had a few days where we had nothing better to do so we decided to go on a little road trip with the ultimate goal of looking at rusty cars in Värmland. Some of you who read this might feel that car wrecks dumped in the nature is nothing but an eyesore. If you feel like that we would recommend you to stop reading because ... read more

A blog with the founder of the Nobel Prize, one Nobel laureate and a troll that has nothing to do with any of them In August 2022 we both managed to get a few days off from work. Since it was still summer and the weather forecast promised lovely weather we decided to go on a little road trip. We travelled through a district called Värmland Country. Our main goal for this road trip was a very small place called Båstnäs, so small that it doesn't even count as a village. We will write about Båstnäs and the site we wanted to see there in our next blog entry. Båstnäs is located only 2 km from the Norwegian border so to go there we pretty much had to travel all across Sweden. In this blog entry ... read more

Some random small towns and villages When we started planning our vacation this year we thought that going abroad was not a good idea. It felt like our best option was to stay in Sweden and make a road trip here. Well, we have not seen much of Sweden so we were OK with that. For various reasons we decided to first take one week off in June and then travel in the south of Sweden and then take three more weeks later in summer and then travel north. Here is the first blog entry from the shorter of the trips. Here comes a short introduction to some of the places we went to this week. => Brahehus Castle - Strictly this is a not a castle, it is a ruin. The ruins of Brahehus overlook ... read more

Wanderer How does John Bauer see his trolls No, they are not trolls, what do you think – in today’s Internet: heroes-not-heroes-anti-heroes! They are the real trolls, as Europe and the world saw them a hundred years ago (1911;1912;1913). Not everyone, of course, saw them, but those who became acquainted with the world of John Bauer (1882 – 1918), Swedish painter and illustrator. Trolls in Scandinavia, especially Norway, are naturally already known in ancient times. But really they are depicted by Henrik Ibsen in his Peer Gynt and can be heard in Edvard Grieg’s music. However, the particular form they took only in the listener’s mind and imagination. Each had their own trolls... read more
