Lake in Värmland County
The real highlight in Värmland County is the nature. A blog with the founder of the Nobel Prize, one Nobel laureate and a troll that has nothing to do with any of them
In August 2022 we both managed to get a few days off from work. Since it was still summer and the weather forecast promised lovely weather we decided to go on a little road trip. We travelled through a district called Värmland Country. Our main goal for this road trip was a very small place called Båstnäs, so small that it doesn't even count as a village. We will write about Båstnäs and the site we wanted to see there in our next blog entry.
Båstnäs is located only 2 km from the Norwegian border so to go there we pretty much had to travel all across Sweden. In this blog entry we will write about the places we stopped at while going to and from Båstnäs. Trust us, doing a road trip in Sweden in summer is a great way to spend time and we can recommend it.
Below we have written about the towns and some other places we visited on this road trip. But before
Street art
Street art in Sunne we go on we want to point out that the real highlight in Värmland County is the nature. The forests, the lakes and the agricultural landscape is absolutely stunning in summer.
Årjäng Årjäng is a small town, population just over 3,000, which looks and feels like most other Swedish towns of similar size. Årjäng has a city centre which takes ten minutes to walk through. Unless you have a good reason to linger longer than that you probably won't.
Årjäng's trademark/town symbol is a large statue known as the Årjäng
Troll. Troll in this case refers to a fairy tale creature in the Norse mythology, not idiots making comments on Internet.
Karlskoga The industrialist Alfred Nobel, known for founding the Nobel Prize, lived for a while in Karlskoga and is commemorated by a statue in the town square.
Töcksfors Before 1860 transport in Värmland County was a challenge due to it being very remote, wild and sparsely populated. Since there were forests in the area and that there were potential for mining industry
Dalsland Canal was built to enable transport to, from and between the many

Arvika We stopped in
Arvika because we needed a place to stay for the night. It is a pretty town with a pleasant town centre. The town centre is well worth strolling around in for at least two hours.
Sunne The last place we stopped in on this little road trip was
Sunne, a town with about 13,000 inhabitants. Unlike the other places we have mentioned in this blog entry Sunne actually has a genuine tourist site -
Rottneros Park. The park is a traditional palace park which surrounds Rottneros Manor. The park is beautifully tended but the real drawing card is the statues. Throughout the park there are possibly as many as a hundred statues and other sculptures. The artworks are mainly by Swedish sculptors but there are some non-Swedes represented as well.
Our visit in Sunne happened to coincide with a festival where car enthusiasts gather and show off their classic American cars. We had no idea that this festival was taking place. We only went into Sunne centre to have
Neon sign
We really love these beautiful neon signs a cup of coffee when we realized that there was something going on. We missed the main closing-of-the-festival cruise since it, unknown to us, took place outside of the town. All we saw were the cars where the drivers decided to make a detour into town.
By the way, if you like American cars from the 1950-ies we can recommend that you take a look in
a blog entry we published six years ago .
This is the end of this blog entry. The next blog entry we publish will focus on a very unusual tourist attraction tucked away in the middle of nowhere less than 2 km from the border with Norway.

There's something about reflections in still water that makes stopping to take the pic oh so worth it. Beautiful picture in a blog full of great shots!
