Thursday 27th July. Uppsala today.....we left about 10am and drove north on the E4 to Uppsala. It is a very historical city and a popular university city. First stop was the castle on the hill, overlooking the city and surrounds - buiilt initially as a fortress in the 1500s, and now is the official residence of the City Governor. We walked down the steps to the west to the Botannical Gardens - they were the castle gardens and were given to the University by King Gustav 111 in 1787. They are formal, with box hedges around the grassed and planted areas, and conifers shaped to look like pyramids. The orangerie was fairly empty as the large potted phoenix palms etc were all outside for the summer. There was an interesting section with cacti. Across the street ... read more

Tuesday 25th July. A bit of a late start after waking at 2am and only dozing after. Light nights don't help !!! We took the Tunnelbana (underground) into the city and booked our train journey to Harnosand.....about 5 hours north of Stockholm... for Monday. We wandered around the city centre and went to the Kulturhuset and saw a display of 100 years of Finnish Design. Wednesday 26th July. Awake early again. Today we are going on a road trip around Lake Malaren...about 300 kms. We left about 9.30 and drove south-west on the E20 motorway. First stop was Gripsholm Castle....one of the many on the lake shores. It was owned by early kings and used as their summer retreat as well as a fortress in earlier days. It has been added to and modified many times, ... read more

Jenom jsme se ... read more

There's a forest near the house with a 4.5 km wooded trail loop (gets lots of use and is lit - actually lit with lights, not lit lit lit). Lori jumped over a long brown slippery-wet looking snake on her run this morning. Headed out to find Dalarö which is located on the coast of Sweden just a little south-east of Stockholm (spotted two deer along the way). Funny - they think of deers as rats here because they eat up peoples' gardens. Dalarö is an affluent cottage area on the seashore. We had planned to eat lunch out there but were unable to find a good place to eat so picked up some "tube ham and cheese" and baguettes and drove to the beach for a picnic. We found Schweizerbadet (badet means beach) which was ... read more

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Woke up feeling less jet-lagged which was nice! After a slow start, we headed off to a small town just north of Stockholm called Sigtuna. This town is known for its ancient church remains (11th century) and its long pedestrian shopping street. We walked all around the town and the shopping street and mostly just bought a few snacks but enjoyed the walk and the town. We found two churches: St. Peters and St. Olof's and walked around the grounds and the cemetery of St. Olof's. The graves were quite different from what we see at home. Both are under renovations for visitor safety reasons. Nigel made an astute observation in one of the parking lots. He noticed that there was a license plate with the letter "S" on it (indicating ... read more

We left Auckland on time at 13.45 on Saturday 22nd July and flew with Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong. The seats were not very comfortable and I ended up with a sore back. Seeing that it was daytime, I watched 3 movies... Hidden Figures, The Zookeeper's Wife and A United Kingdom - all of which I wanted to see while at home, but hadn't. We arrived at 9pm local time - 1am NZ time, and had a 2 hour stopover, before flying with Lufthansa to Munich. I was really tired this time and had a good few hours sleep in a comfortable seat. We had a 3.5 hour stopover there, then flew on to Stockholm, arriving at 11am. Jonathan and Bertil were there to meet us and it was great to see them again. We had ... read more

Monday 24 July... Jonathan had to go to wortk to meet them team making the next film he's involved in. Lee and I walked to Alvik - his nearest local shopping area - found an ATM and a coffee shop that served flat whites !!! We then went to the supermarket and bought some bread, cheese, ham and fruit etc for lunch. It's always interesting trying to find what you are looking for in a supermarket when everything is in a foreign language. After lunch, Bertil took Sara and us to Drottningholm Palace - one of the Royal palaces on the outskirts of the city. A lot of it is now a museum open to the public except when being used for state visits. No royals at home so we went in. It is a baroque ... read more

We flew yesterday afternoon from Toronto to Iceland (Rejkiavik) and had a stopover for a couple of hours around midnight. It did finally get darker but not fully dark and not for long! Looked very cool from the air flying in. Then back on another plane to fly to Stockholm. Flights were both quite comfortable and we all had seatback screens so watched movies, etc. Unfortunately, I was the only one who slept and I only got about an hour. So, we arrived in Stockholm and everything went very smoothly with getting baggage, getting the car and driving to the house. One observation from the airport was that given Russell and Nigel's fair hair, I think the locals assumed they were Swedish and when Nigel tried asking them a question, they instantly replied in Swedish to ... read more
