To see this city again after a whole year is really great. Already one year has passed... I'm getting old, am I ? Anyway, I'll write a few words for the ones among you, who has not seen Stockholm yet. Well, Stockholm is a great city. There are a lot of very big buildings, which are beautiful. The old city is really interesting. Its buildings are old, but well conserved and there are all kind of shops. Many museums are free here, but they are not less interesting. Since Stockholm is a big capital with many islands, it is a good idea to book a sightseeing tour in bus or boat. This way, you'll really see the whole city. The public transports are well done, so it is pretty easy to find your way here. The ... read more

We awoke this morning hoping that we would be so fortunate as to see the sun today. My first look out the window this morning shattered those hopes. It was another drizzly morning as we ventured back over to the Gamla Stan with a plan of checking out the Nobel Museum. As soon as we got off the metro stop, we noticed a free tour gathering so with no concrete plans, we decided to join in. Our free tour guide was a Ukranian girl living in Stockholm for a few years and as we all opened up our umbrellas, we were off on our walking tour of Stockholm. We walked through the Gamla Stan heading towards the Parliament House. With it's impressive architecture, and beautiful surrounding gardens, the Parliament House lies right in between the Old ... read more

We awoke this morning to some very gloomy skies. Of course, while traveling you can't really let this slow you down so we put on our warmest attire and walked over to the nearby grocery store to buy each of ourselves a cheap umbrella for the day. With umbrellas in hand, we caught the Metro over to Stockholm's Central Station and made the short walk in the rain over to Stockholm's City Hall. We explored the grounds for a bit and decided that we would ascend the City Hall Tower for great albeit cloudy views over Stockholm. While waiting for our 10:00 time to ascend the tower, we explored the waterfront and the surrounding gardens. I chose to take the steps up the tower instead of the elevator and about halfway through the ascent, we were ... read more

Flying out of LAX, we flew non-stop on Norwegian Airlines to Stockholm. Norwegian Airlines is one of those budget airlines where you pay for everything in order to try and keep the fares as low as possible. We chose to not pay the $40 for 2 meals so we had to endure a 10 hour flight with just the snacks we brought for ourselves. Arriving in Stockholm, we took the Arlanda Express for the quick ride to Stockholm's Central Station. From here, we caught a taxi to our nearby hotel, the Best Western Kom Hotel. We settled in and freshened up before heading out to do a little exploring. Using public transportation, we rode the Metro to Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town. It was almost 4pm and upon arriving, the first thing we did was grab ... read more

We started our day with an early breakfast so we could have time to pack up our gear. We parked our luggage at the hotel and walked back to the harbor. On the way, we passed a demonstration by two opposing groups. The police kept everyone apart and it was well managed. After a cappuccino along the water to wake up, we boarded our rustic ship, the M/S Ostana, for our own “3 hour tour” (sung to the tune of Gilligan’s Island). We cruised through some of the close-in islands of the Stockholm Archipelago. There are thousands of islands, big and little, with both full-time homes and summer cabins. If we had gone to the outer rim of the Archipelago, it would have taken over 8 hours. We saw the site of one of the first ... read more

We slept in and had another big Swedish breakfast to prepare us for some serious walking. We hoofed it though the city, taking it all in, and headed down the Strandvagen (a beautiful walk along the harbor) to book an Archipelago cruise for tomorrow. Then it was on to the Djurgarden, a huge island of green right in the city, like Central Park on steroids. These are “Royal Gardens” and are under royal jurisdiction and management due to their original history as Royal hunting grounds. It breaks even, almost like a cross between a non-profit and a National Park. It’s now home to many museums, attractions and beautiful trails. The museums ranged from odd and whimsical (ABBA, Snuf & Matches Museum, and Spirits Museum) to the historical (Nordic Museum and Biological Museums). We visited Skansen, the ... read more

Tuesday, 22 March, 2016 Stockholm, Sweden The start to our vacation did not start out the way we would have preferred. We had the worst fight experience to Stockholm from Portland. First of all, Delta changed our seat reservations and would not let us sit together to Minneapolis. The flight to Paris was okay, but on arrival, we still did not have our final boarding passes to Stockholm – and we only had an hour until our connecting flight left. After walking half way across the airport, we found out we needed to get our tickets from the counter that was near where we originally got off the plane. We hiked back to where we were supposed to be, then waited for quite some time for an Air France customer service agent. Even though there were ... read more

Friday, 25 March, 2016 Stockholm, Sweden We overslept till 11 again, but woke up to Uncle Bill’s tea and coffee. He even made us some of his perfect scrambled eggs. Yes, they are perfect. He drove us into town where we met with Stefan, Maria’s brother. Stefan is friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the city. In addition, he is incredibly funny making him the perfect tour guide. Our first stop was the Vasa Museum which houses the Vasa, a 17th century ship that sunk about a mile from land on its maiden voyage. Beautifully constructed but poorly designed, the ship sat at the bottom of the Baltic for 333 years until it was recovered and restored. It is an awesome museum and worth checking out. Next, Stefan took us west to Gamla Stan, one of Stockholm’s ... read more

It was a matter of a few minutes, a blur of red, and Kallhall were already up 3-0... Not a great start to our first exhibition game as the 2016 Ice Fernz squad, but definitely an eye opener. In the defensive end, we worked hard to practice what we've been learning--drive them wide, box out in front of the net and close the gap with our sticks to the puck. In the offensive end, we took our shots when we could, but we were outshot, outpassed and overall outclassed by Kallhall, a Division I women's team from Stockholm. Better to learn our weaknesses sooner rather than later I suppose. The best period was the second period--where our D zone coverage staved off their scoring frenzy, but by the end of the game, we were convincingly defeated ... read more
