Hello Reader. Now, where was I...? Last you heard, we had just lost a couple of Belgian twins, Harri's family, and a boyfriend named Laurent. Spirits were high in the group, or as high as could be expected with our inevitable separation only a week or so away... so, not-so-very, in other words. Chrysa, Alice, Harriet, Sue, Mike and I did our parts to keep ourselves together and positive as much as possible during these final days. We were hanging out with Olivia more (I have mentioned her before - I went out with her for a big night). She's a sweet girl from England. She had been in town for almost as long as Harri and Ali, and also frequented New O's. (There is still much debate/tension as to who went to New Orleans first ... read more

Hello Reader. Wow, it certainly has been a while, has it not? It has been almost six months since my last posting. I could tell you that nothing of any real interest has happened since then, but that would make me a reasonless liar... and I'm not one for lying. I shall pick up where I left off, but there are a few things you should know. Firstly, I have done everything you can possibly imagine in the past five and a half months, barring a trip to the moon and eating a live animal. I have been places and met people that one might only read about in fantastical travel blogs (?!?). Secondly, I intend to report, as I have done in the past, on these amazing events and individuals in as much detail and ... read more

Hello Reader. I overslept. It was fruit salad Wednesday and I slept through it. I rushed to the hostel to see if everyone was still there, but they had already headed to the beach. I called Mike then headed off, sporting my Amstel cowboy hat that they were giving away for free during Las Fallas. They had saved me some fruit salad, which I later ate, and we laid in the sun for hours. For about forty-five minutes or so, Harri laid her head on my stomach. It was only afterward at New Orleans that we realized that I had a large white patch of skin (surrounded by sunburnt skin) in the shape of a head Harri's had been. A good laugh all around... not sure if it was a laugh with me or at me. ... read more

Hello Reader. That Sunday, I cleaned up my room and left the windows open to try to get the guy smell out for Casey and Jackie who were to arrive around six pm or so that evening. My thoughts were elsewhere while I was hard at work in New Orleans that afternoon. I haven't seen anyone I know from the states in almost six months. Besides the blog, I only keep in touch with a couple people from home. I didn't know what to expect when I met the girls. I was getting nervous when they hadn't arrived by seven-thirty, but they walked in around eight and we exchanged big hugs. Jorge bought them their first drinks and asked them to send him their license plates when they got home. Casey took his business card. My ... read more

Hello Reader. On Monday morning, Dan and I woke up around two-thirty. After the week I had at work, I decided that I wouldn't even walk past New Orleans on my day off. We went to Mike's house to sit on our asses and accomplish nothing for the entire day. We rented The Island and made pasta. I think everyone enjoyed the time off... Fallas can really cut in to your lazy time. Janine, Mike's friend/couchsurfer, left that night to go back up to northern Spain where she was studying Spanish. She was a super nice girl - one of those who would pick you up if you were hitch-hiking. Dan moved to the nest that night, where he would have a bed as opposed to my tile floor. He and Daniel Jove walked me home ... read more

fallas is a festival from the 15th to the 19th of march. the festival is apparently semi-religious, dedicated to joseph, the father of Jesus, both carpenters. this tradition dates back to a time when carpenters around valencia would periodically collect all the of the scrap materials from their work, pile it up, and burn it. now they build huge effigies out of wood, styrofoam, and paper machet. the most expensive falla was in excess of 600,000 euros. the themes represented are local and international politicians and celebrities, incredibly un-politically correct and frankly racist themes, and everything inbetween. they all tended to be painted with pastel colors, and often looked like some sort of freakish disneyland characters. every day in the main plaza ajuntamiento, there was a fireworks display at two p.m. called the mascleta. it was ... read more

Hello Reader. The city was buzzing. Every six blocks (at most) the city was erecting huge Fallas (the name of the festival and the name of the objects). They were all cartoon-like in appearance and you could tell that a team of people put a lot of time into making them... knowing that their purpose was ultimately to be burned to the ground. The street lights were also put up and city hall in the main plaza was glowing like it was Christmas. But the most prevalent and persistent reminder that Las Fallas had almost arrived was the constant popping of firecrackers in the streets. Standing on the balcony of my flat, at any given time of the day, I could hear up to five pops per minute from the surrounding streets. An outsider might think ... read more

Carla knew Patch was at the Fallas and had been texting him all night. Somehow we ended up in the same place at the same time. We said it would be stupid to be so close and not say hey to him, so Carla and I went to holla at Patch real quick. Real quick turned into the whole night. We ended up ditching Monica, Claribel and Kate. We had been hanging out with Monica all week and it was time to meet some new people. Yeah, her friends were meeting us, but I already didn’t like them! Hahaha. They got in the way of my food and made me walk all around Valencia. I’m just playing. The people who were with Patch were all from my school and I told myself I’d rather meet people ... read more

Somehow I woke up at 7:30 to shower and meet at 8:45. I thought I was gonna be mad late, so I ran. Imagine me running down the street with a huge bag. I was breathing mad hard when I got there and only Kate and Claribel were there. It’s a good thing that they had come earlier and found out where the bus station was because Carla didn’t show up until ten til. The worst thing is that Monica had Carla’s ticket and she was mad late. We couldn’t even reach her cuz she was in the metro. Kate, Claribel and I went to the bus and told the bus driver that two more were coming. Somehow they mad it in time and caught the bus. It would have sucked if they had of missed ... read more
