I went to the market and picked up supplies because Id found a blender in the hostel. It was the best banana smoothie ever! Left on the busabout bus for the journey to Madrid. We hit monster traffice leaving the city. Police everywhere, bomb squad adn ambulances. They diverted the bus and it turns out a metro derailed and killed like 40 people... Once in Madrid I found my hostel, which was only a 3 person dorm with beds not bunks! Small things matter! Free internet and a kitchen was an added bonus. Went out with people from the hostel in search of famous madrid nightlife. Fleur and Mina were from Aus and 3 18y.o Colorado boys Dave zac adn ryan. they came from america for only two weeks, so much closer for them. We couldtn ... read more

who knew but apparently Valencia is Spains third largest city. I spent 1 adn 3/4 hours walking down a dried up river bed turned park which went to the beach. Saw the America´s Cup adn lots of really interesting architecture. I met a guy from Templestowe in the hostel who knew some similar people which was weird, he had been working at the Living Room before he came over here. Caught up with Canberra girls Sarah and Lauren adn we went out. Spain is crazy, people are still in resturants eating at 12am and the clubs dont even open until 2am. We had Aqua valencia... read more

Off to Valencia to see the City of Science. Our hostel finally had a kitchen and you wouldn't believe how excited we were to cook pasta. Imagine, me excited about cooking!?! The markets in Valencia weren't as pretty as those in Barcelona, but they were much bigger and had more quality stuff. We bought some saffron because Spain is apparently the place to get the good stuff. Our pasta dinners and lunch sandwiches etc. were so tasty from the fresh ingredients and wonderful cheese. Our second day was spent in the City of Science. Funky architecture (unfortunately stuffy due to the many windows, I guess air circulation was sacrificed in the looks). I had so much fun playing in the "forest of chromosomes" yes people, the geekiness follows through on vacation. It was a huge display ... read more

I love this state. I have only been to the capital of Valencia, which is Valencia. It´s on the Med. The centro is so small that I found myself starting in one side and by the end of the day gone completely to the opposite side. Everyone here is really friendly. They have their own dialect, Valencian, but many people here speak Castelleano or English. It´s a old city filled with young people. I was told by a grandmother that many young families have returned and the city its going through a renaissance. The centro has kept its small town feel to it. Many of the streets are pedestrian only and there are parks everywhere for people to enjoy. What I have loved most about the city are the fountains. Every plaza has a fountain, every ... read more

13.05.2006 The day started with a torrential down pour - the type that makes you want to bury yourself under the covers - and we thought we’d be in for a rather drab day, but we were back on the horse after our day off at the beach in Calpe and rearing to go and see what Valencia City was all about. And I can tell you, the bells of St Clemens have nothing on these guys - there are oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits and any other citrus you care to imagine at every turn, even in the middle of a town with 1.5m people! Valencia is about 80Km from where we are staying in Oliva, but Sarah made short work of the trip on the A7, as her petrol head days of old came through. ... read more

“as the site is close to the sea, and valencia is so dry, i decided to make water a major element for the whole site using it as a mirror for the architecture.” -santiago calatrava (architect of the ciudad de artes y ciencias) the ciudad de las artes y las ciencias (city of arts and sciences - www.cac.es) is a white monster of modern architechture. it is built where a river used to run (so, in a dry riverbed), and with the provided sidewalk you can walk all the way to downtown valencia. neato, gang... on friday night we started walking along the riverbed walk with the intention to go to downtown valencia (we hadn´t been there yet as we had gone to the beach that afternoon instead). basically the entire time we were walking we ... read more

Hello Reader. A couple of days passed and I began to tie up my loose ends. The end of my stay in Valencia was fast approaching and there was plenty I needed to do. I had worked my last day with Jorge and Fina, but that doesn't mean I didn't see them everyday anyway, (we had numerous 'going away drinks' over my last weekend there). I had to make my travel arrangements, say goodbye to everyone I wouldn't see again, and most importantly loose ten kilo out of my back pack - cause DAMN that gorilla was heavy! But first came Mike's departure from Valencia. He was getting a whole month off of work, which he planned to use to his full advantage. Ali, Harri, Mike and I had gone back and forth between Granada and ... read more

Our first (serious) travel experience! Started absolutely fantastic, ended even better :) We stayed at this pretty hotel in a tiny place called L'liana , right nearby Valencia. And it was a good choice. Instead of listening to busy streets and being annoyed by noisy pedestrians we could sleep peacefully, away from the city. That's all we really wanted regarding nights, because we weren't going to spend all days in the room or a swimming pool. It took us a whole week to discover the Spanish beauty and wonders. Every single morning we would wake up at 8 am, have some gorgeous breakfast (such as MASSIVE strawberries or watermelons) and wander off to a bus stop, where we would catch a bus to the city of Valencia. Apart from admiring enormous palm trees and sunny weather, ... read more
