Question: Why do so very many travellers fly into Alicante/Elche airport all year round? Answer: More than likely to get to big, brash, brazen-faced Benidorm, the king of the package trip Spanish Costa scene. Well, in my view, despite their virtual guarantee of a holiday in the sun, albeit coated in thickly-applied tourist sheen, if it is genuine Spanish culture which they seek, they're better off reconsidering what lies closer to their first point of arrival. Alicante is a medium - large-sized Spanish city which has easily enough in the way of features to make for an enjoyable festive break, and then some. The city's star-studded cast is fronted by the sizeable castle of Santa Barbara, a piece of history perched atop a hill, which appears to offer the greatest vantage-point views which they city is ... read more

We headed out for Alicante this morning to visit the Santa Barbara Castle. The trek was only 26 miles and scheduled to take 1 hour according to Google maps. Travel through Europe sometimes involves a lot of minor highways with a lot of roundabouts! This was the case on the N-332 today. The Santa Barbara Castle is a 9th century castle and built during the time of Muslim control of the Iberian Peninsula ( from 711 till 1296). Most of the historical data within the castle was all in Spanish (made it a little difficult for understanding). :-) The views were great and it was a nice hike up and down the mountain. Enjoy!... read more

It was pretty safe to say that things at home had been rather rocky for a while ? and change was definitely needed. So out of the bag my hubby announced we were going to Alicante for a few days in order to spend some quality time together ☀️ My friend Wendy had offered to look after James, Jemima and the house, so off we went.....✈️ It was very grey and wet in Alfreton ☔️ when we left for the airport so we were definitely looking forward to seeing the sun. Apart from me getting the time of the flight wrong by 35mins all went very smoothly. We had booked car parking at East Midlands Airport due to our late arrival time on the way back. It was all very straightforward. We got the the courtesy ... read more

Thought we hadn't been to enough of Spains wonderful feastivals and Markets in our area. So googled the best markest to see in Spain and up came Orihuela Medieval Market, never heard of it, but less than 2 hours away. Perfect! So on to find a place to stay , close by, takes dogs and has parking. Not alot of choice. So found a hostal to stay in, booked , done! (Talk about that choice later). The Medieval Market is help from Friday night to Sunday on the first weekend in February( unless they move the date), as it is Spain and nothing is set in gold. Last minute loose end tying in the office for Alex, while busied myself finished off the packing and....going to the gym! Kissed and cuddles the dogs, Indie threw up in the garden when she saw the suitcases going in the car, calmed her down and told her Grandma and Grandad would be coming to stay. Frazier was more concerned that he hadn't had any lunch! Decided to grab a snack for the journey, I got a salad and Alex ordered a cheese sandwich. Hit the road with me taking first driving shift. Imagine Alex's horror when he opened his sandwich to find it was Tuna!! Cue a quick stop at a service station bar to keep him happy with a ham and cheese bocadillo! Some heavy traffic en-route and my first shift of driving turned out ... read more

It feels like all i've said for the last 8 weeks is “i cannot wait for the end of August” and lo and behold, that moment has finally arrived! Those who have read my previous post will understand my reasons! Honestly, it was like a mass exodus from Santa Pola as soon as it hit the eve of 1st of September, and all of a sudden there was a beautiful row of empty parking spaces outside of our house… And the noise has diminished to less than half it's previous levels. This is the time when we can enjoy the beach and the pleasant temperatures without being whacked with sun umbrellas or lilos as you walk by, or have to listen at mama screaming at little Jose on the beach who is crying because, well, just ... read more

Where have you flown from? And where are you staying? And what's your name? I seem to be repeating these words in my sleep we've been checking in so many customers of late. In fact, we're seeing about 8,000 guests a week! Our usual quiet Tuesdays have been replaced by a barage of flights all landing within 10 minutes of each other. Ad then there's the missing prams and damaged suitcases to contend with…. All in a day's work! The rising temperatures and increased number of passengers means everyone is starting to get a little cranky, not least the bus drivers. I can understand when they are having to lump heavy suitcases all day, but some of them can be particularly moody and take it out on us when it's not our fault! Greg professed to ... read more
