Being a traveller can have its downsides sometimes. It takes moments like seeing a friend’s event on facebook, or photos from a night out you could have been at to realise it. And then there’s skyping your mum, aunt and sister one Saturday afternoon and thinking how much you miss being able to see them face to face and being part of the family birthday celebration meals. It’s these moments you miss and sacrifice as a fidgety, adventurous and care-free traveller. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t swap our new lives for anything, and I also know when I’m back home I am bored within a matter of days. But there are still days when I’d love nothing more than to have a night out with my longest standing and bestest mates and just be myself, ... read more

Still hot and the tan is getting better. We seem to be into the pattern of rising late, go to the pool, then going somewhere for the afternoon/evening. Since my blog the other day we have been to a shopping mall called Zenza Boulevard which impresses me a lot. While there the kids can ride around the shops on mobile animals. They can also cool down by standing in the square of water spouts and parents can sit and watch while having refreshments. Great shops with all the usual big names. We had one of my favourites, spare ribs, in one of the many restaurants. Going into Alicante is always interesting and as usual, shopping, the entertainment, and a meal at our favourite Tapas cafe. We have gone to this cafe every time we have been ... read more

Well, I wanted hot and I have hot. We have had a few days here now and it has been so hot it has taken a bit of getting used to. Swimming in the pool or the sea every day and I certainly enjoy my last swim for the day in the pool as it starts to cool down. We are very lucky to be able to come down here with Chris and Hege and enjoy Rune and Lillens apartment. We have been here a number of times over the years and find that it is magic. Either eating at home on the roof top terrace or eating in the various restaurants is always good and the beach is fantastic. We have taken in the zoo, Rio Safari Elche, were we have been before. the kids ... read more

It’s now been a few weeks since we both started working in our new jobs and what a difference. It’s much more relaxed, and there’s little worries to deal with so we’re both happy. We feel the most settled we’ve been since we moved over in January and it feels like things are finally coming together ‘poco a poco’. We’ve kept in touch with and meet up regularly with our friends (the clique!) and have joined a gym and are doing classes regularly each week (now we can afford it). It just shows that it IS possible to be an English speaker working in a Spanish city (as long as you are prepared to search for it and make compromises). We’ve even been to the town hall to get our padron and are now recognised as ... read more

After a scenic 5 hour train ride from Barcelona along the southern coast of Spain, we arrived in Alicante located on what's know as the White Coast (Costa Blanco) where our seaside condo rental awaited us. The very spacious 3 bedroom 2 bathroom living space was accented by a fantastic partially covered patio overlooking the Mediterranean. The Ingrahams and the Skinners settled into our new space as did Barb and I. This whole area of Spain is lined with thousands of condos and apartments, many which serve as vacation rentals. Again, being just ahead of the tourist season the crowds were minimal and each and every day we awoke to spectacular views of the Mediterranean. Jeff particularly enjoyed "bird watching", another term for enjoying the views of the nude beaches from our balcony :) Alicante is ... read more

So, our initial excitement, relief and gratitude at finding work rather quickly when we first arrived in Spain has now turned to regret, dread and slight anger. Did we start work in haste without really fully considering the terms and conditions? It’s kind of like when you have been house hunting for a long time in search of your ideal home, and then you spot something with promise and you want it so badly you are blind to the cracks on the walls and the damp patches on the ceiling. Did I miss the warning signs? Why was I so taken in by false promises and expectations? Things certainly weren’t going right at work. It all started about a month ago. Up until then I was still dazzled by my boss’s painted on smile, air kisses ... read more

Many people have this wonderful image of Spain that it is all sun, sea and sangria; everyone is happy, the sun is always shining and there’s nothing better to do than relax with a cold beer in hand… Of course that’s true if you are on a nice two week break on the coast in the height of summer, but as an ex-pat living and working here all year round, the reality is slightly different. I thought I would write this post from an honest perspective, as it’s easy for foreigners living abroad to paint this amazing picture of how their life is full of the above stereotypes every day, and it encourages others to head in search of this dream only to be disappointed when it isn’t exactly as it seems. I know that sounds ... read more

Once again I sit here in the sunshine with cup of tea in hand whilst writing my latest blog. The difference being that now I am doing it from the comfort of my own balcony in Alicante, and the temperature has increased by at least 10 degrees if not more. So yes, as you’ve guessed, we are now the proud ‘rentees’ of our own little apartment in the North of Alicante. It’s not the biggest flat in the world, but it has a big terrace overlooking our huge swimming pool, and in the distance you can see the sea peeking out over the horizon. We stuck to our guns about the area we wanted to rent in, as we are only a 15 minute stroll to the nearest beach and it’s one of the cleanest, quietest ... read more

“Are you an ex-pat? On minimum wage and a temporary part-time contract? Thinking of renting a flat in Alicante? Well contact us now: Rejectionville estate agents, serving none of your needs all of the time” We excitedly started hunting for flats in Alicante as soon as we receive our first contract in Spain, not worrying too much about the fact it states we are only on a 6 week trial and legally were only working 5 hours a week each. Right now we are focused on the task in hand and arranging viewings for flats in the sought after area of Cabo Huertas and Playa de San Juan at the north end of the city. We decided to focus our searches there as we are already working in that area and so knew it ... read more

Our two one-way flights back to the UK were an astronomical price, £2,445 (3290.57 euros) and so by the time we got back home to Spain, the travel funds were somewhat depleted. We have decided not to return to South America at this time; we’ll save the Amazon for a future trip. We shall definitely go back. Although our travels have been cut short, nevertheless our South American journey was truly a “once in a lifetime” experience. The whole journey was memorable, the highlights being the Galapagos Islands and their wildlife, the Patagonian fiords, glaciers and “rounding The Horn” and the Falkland Island penguins. As before, after our Round the World trip six years ago, we have had fun totting up some details of the journey, as follows... Our means of transport included… 1 reed boat ... read more
