I sit here writing this in the hazy sunshine with cup of milky tea in hand (I am still British after all) and enjoying the peace and tranquillity of a Sunday siesta in Spain. Lesson plans can wait until manana, best make the most of this weather… It’s easy to paint a perfect picture of our new life here in Spain, but the truth is I’m quite glad to see the back of February. Okay, so we’ve been lucky enough to have found someone daft enough to employ us as teachers (even more so because there are two of us and not just one) and we’ve managed to forge some sort of semi-normal routine, but it’s been a slow process. It’s not been helped by the fact today is one of the very few days this ... read more

I can’t believe we are fast approaching the end of our second week here in Spain- how time flies when you are a jobless bum lol. It’s weird to think usually we’d be gearing up to fly home now and feeling tremendously sad about that, but instead we know we remain here indefinitely… (gosh that sounds a bit like we’re holed up in prison or something). Well it’s been a bit of an up and down week for us, but mostly ups. The start of the week has been very much job focused so we’ve spent a fair amount of time travelling around the Costa Blanca handing our CVs into training centres and giving them our best Spanish phrases (Greg) and best smiles (me). The problem we face at the moment is most places only tend ... read more

So this is it. The start of our new life. I’m not sure if I’m meant to feel any different or not but I don’t really. Well, I do feel quite nervous and slightly weird about looking for work whilst staying in our flat in Spain which has up until now always been a holiday home. As per usual whenever we arrive somewhere new, we head out to the supermarket to stock up on the essentials and food to live on for the week. It feels really good to be able to get back into cooking our own healthy stuff again (my waistline has suffered over Christmas and seems to have expanded slightly…) and it’s also a novelty having a car to carry everything in (walking for a mile there and back in the baking heat ... read more

Saturday 18thOctober 2014 TRIP PREPARATIONS “The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page” Saint Augustine Many people in the world are less fortunate than we are. We count ourselves most fortunate because we have the opportunity to travel; many do not. So we are off travelling again! It is five years since we were last backpacking and so the forthcoming journey is well overdue. We want to read more of the book! So, in just seven days’ time we shall venture forth on a six and a half month trip to South America. We believe that the preparations have been sufficient to provide a structure to the journey, yet flexible enough to allow for spontaneity. In other words, we have a roughly planned itinerary, have booked a few sections ... read more

Well here I am in Spain. I did say that I would do a blog more often but time ran away from me. We have now got into a sort of routine of heading to the beach late morning to get our swimming and tanning, done then we seem to have got into the habit of heading of to have a late lunch, then back home to the pool for a really relaxing time. I'm quite proud of myself as I have only had one afternoon sleep but it is easy to dose in the sun. Dinner is often a restaurant or some times a b'que or such at home. Lilly was very good about her ankle for the first few days but soon got sick of not being able to do all that she wanted. ... read more

We visited the towns south of Alicante, Torrevieja, Pilar de Horadada and Cartagena. Until 1802, Torrevieja existed only as an ancient guard tower, which gave the town its name (Torre Vieja (Spanish) means Old Tower) and some labourers' cottages. The town is known for its salt production. Although by the dawn of the 20th century, a quarter of all the salt harvested from the lagoon in Torrevieja was sold in Spain itself, and the rest exported was to foreign markets. Today, it is still an important industry in Torrevieja and a major employer. There is a Museum of Sea and Salt. The population is approx 50% spanish approx 25 % other european. We stayed one night at the harbour and walked the quiet streets in the evening, not much happening in mid november. The town looked ... read more

We left Asturias last Friday morning in heavy rain. For most of the journey over the mountains back into Castille we were driving up in the clouds, with very poor visibility. It was at this point that we were totally convinced that we were doing the right thing by heading home. We had sort of felt like persevering rather than being "fair weather campers" fleeing from a bit of rain, but driving through these rain clouds we knew that it was a pointless excercise to stay i.e. we couldn´t see the mountains that we had come to hike in! We didn´t see any blue sky until we got down to the province of Palencia. Our 356 km journey took about five hours, to a campsite about 100 km north of Madrid near a small town called ... read more

Work took me to the seaside town and tourist resort of Alicante. Yes indeed, sometime my work (in agriculture) has advantages, this time talking to folk about saffron. Spain is not only the home of delicious paella, but the place where traditionally the key spice ingredient was grown. That industry has now declined (90% comes from Iran but that's another story) however the trading houses remain located in Alicante and the nearby town of Novelda about 15 km inland. So off I went from Barcelona (I could equally have flow to Valencia or Madrid but the Sagrada Familia was on my "bucket list" so I took that option). I travelled by the express train from Sants Station in Barca; a truly excellent experience, about 190 Euros return First Class in complete comfort, on time and just ... read more
