Lorenza is a lonely small town, not much worth talking about. I am eager to start this day for 2 reasons. #1 it's the longest, highest and last major climb on the Camino. #2 it has the town of Mondonedo on its route which has a Cathedral that a National Cultural Historical Site. The days starts with low clouds, cool temps, and a real threat of rain again. It's a 2 hour climb to Mondonedo, I left at 7:30 and my B & B was not open. My first stop is for some breakfast. Odd to me no one serves a real breakfast in Spain, toast or croissant coffee or tea period, no eggs, no pancakes, no bacon no nothin. After tea and a croissant I head off looking for this wonderful Cathedral. I come to ... read more

Ribadero is a town located on the River Eo, making it a kind of port town. It's only 1 mile from the ocean and has a large export facility for logs and other natural resources. It is also in a new region of Spain. When you cross the River Eo, you leave Asturias and enter Galicia region. This can be significant as each region has the responsibility to maintain the Camino, as well as provide maps and Information on the Camino. This is provided thru the tourist information center in most towns. This information, maps, assistance, guidance and attitude of each Tourist center has varied drastically with each region. When I started in the Basque Country I was provided a detailed google earth map with the Camino overlaid on the map. It provided enough info. that ... read more

Started the day with a large coffee ( a small bucket, I misjudged the size), and a croissant with jam. We started walking at 7.20, headlamp blazing away, with the intention of walking to Portomarin , about 20kms away. I enjoyed walking in the dark as the route was a steady long climb which, under the 4 meter beam of a headlamp, never looks too daunting. I was accompanied by the sounds of various owls, occasional roosters crowing, and the barking of dogs disturbed from their sleep, by the light and the constant click, click, clicking of the walking poles on the ever changing surfaces we walk on. I bought new rubber tips for my poles but they are still noisy at dawn. Despite this noise, it is still the most peaceful time of the day. ... read more

Geo: 42.7723, -7.48136We got up on our own about 7:00am, no other pilgrims sneaking around in the dark. Since their was no town for about 5.5 kms, we stopped for coffee at the hotel. Again, they were less than friendly. Had our usual breakfast purchased from the market and went back to the ominous steps where Sue fell.We met Jo from Malaysia who was already in O Cebreiro from La Faba. We followed her out of town which was on the road and found out later we were not on the Camino. At the first town we saw pilgrims coming down on a dirt trail but we all ended in the same place. Linares had a beautiful little church but nothing else. We climbed quite a lot and ended up at a spot 1250 meters high ... read more

Let me back up and explain how I’m living in Spain legally. Believe me, it was a hassle and a half to find a “stable” “job” teaching English in a Spanish-speaking country. Eventually I found this program, which is called North American Culture and Language Assistants Program or the ‘Auxiliars’ Program. It’s run by the Spanish government, and the roles are mostly similar to English Program in Korea (EPIK). The main differences are: -it’s about a third of the pay (factoring in Korean bonuses like flights and apartment rent); I’m essentially making a sacrifice with money and professional development to be more immersed in Spanish -we’re only required to be at school for 12 hours/week (whereas in Korea you typically have to be at school 35 hours even if you only teach 12 hours) -this program ... read more

Fitbit: steps: 36,711' stairs 181, miles 16.04 We have enjoyed two nights and a rest day in the Pousada de Portomarin. The room is a suite with nice sitting area separated from the sleeping area by a separate bath room. So nice to be able to work in the sitting area with room and table to move around and be comfortable. Our nights including breakfast on the Pensioners plan was 85 euros per night. What a deal compared to some of the other Hotels and Paradors with 5 stars. We had left Karen's boots with the reception to dry after cleaning ... read more

Fitbit: 15.9 miles, 225 stairs. 35875 steps Quote of the Day: "The knees may ache and your feet may bleed, But the spirit within is all you really need." Yesterday was lots of up hill climbing. Today is lots of down hill slogging. With a lot more up hill than expected! Because of the darkness and fog we walk along the road to Linares. There are many pilgrims including some bus groups walking the rocky path and the road. The two meet here and we stop for an OJ, ... read more

It is odd how all things feel back end this holiday. Perhaps it has something to do with going a week later. The weather is still holding out and it seems to feel better here in Spain in late September than it does in Britain in high summer. We woke early with the larks as we always do. Why can we not sleep in when we get chance to? We filled up Suzy with water and set off for reception to pay. According to the young girl yesterday we could pay at 8. However the place was dead. As they had our passport copies there was no way we were leaving without paying. Not that we would. I walked around the bar areas , into the toilet blocks and then knocked on the window. I could ... read more
