I didn’t realize how much I had to research. I went to Barcelona every year between 2009 and 2011. Back then, I was giving suggestions and knew exactly where to go and what to do. Fast forward to 2023, and I had forgotten all the details 😳 Plus, there have been many changes. The biggest one is that Park Guell is no longer free. Also, the Magic Fountain was shut off due to drought, Tranvía Blau wasn’t running due to renovations, and some places closed during Covid. With new knowledge, here we go, Barcelona version 2.0, a family edition! Fri: Bienvenido! The trip was so smooth we even discovered that we don’t have to take the monorail from Bart station if flying out of the international terminal, haha. The flight was quick sleeping for the most ... read more

CRUISING I started writing this blog a few days ago by talking about destinations but half way through I decided to change the format. The reason being, I have been seeing so many wonderful historic sites that even I am beginning to feel jaded and think, oh, yet another cathedral/castle/ancient ruin etc. I have enjoyed them all but there is a limit to how much you can take in day after day! A sea day came as a welcome break. If that is the effect on me I think it could be much worse for readers. Plus I thought some people might like more information about the cruise experience, particularly for a lone traveller so I will start there and then go through the destinations and if boredom sets in you can stop reading. Today is the last day of our trip, we fly back tomorrow morning. After last night’s wonderful experience with Gaudi’s Park Guell, we were really looking forward to seeing Gaudi’s masterpiece church this afternoon, but first we have a brief excursion just outside of Barcelona to Catalonia to visit Montserrat. Monserrat, the ”Serrated Mountain” is the name of a series of 3 peaks of the Catalan mountain range. It’s highest peak is about 4000 ft. The rock formations are beautiful, and there are three ways to get to the top. There is a cable car, a cog railway, and a couple of roads. Since we have a bus, we naturally took the road. Once at the top, there is a funicular that takes you to the actual peak, but there isn’t really anything at the peak, ... read more

Today we left for our final destination – Barcelona. It’s another long bus day, there’s really no way around it, it’s a long way from Costa Del Sol to Barcelona, and the last couple of days have been spent on the bus with a couple of one night stants in Granada and Velencia, but tonight we check in for two nights in Barcelona. This time we made a couple of interesting stops along the way. Our first comfort stop was in a little beachfront town of about 8000 people, with the unfortunate name of Peniscola. At first I thought it was the same name as the Florida city Pensacola, but then I looked closer and realized it was actually spelled like Penis-Cola. Fortunately, the Spanish pronunciation is more like Peh-NIS-co-la, and we’ll leave it at that. ... read more

Barcelona. Sometimes I feel that perhaps I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t been there, so at last the chance to set this right. As we’re only going to be in the city for less than 2 full days we do some research and plan how to spend our time. We agree that there are 2 “sights” we want to see (Picasso museum and La Sagrada Familia) so book tickets in advance for both. We will then try to see some of the architecture and spend time in the old town area but that shouldn’t be hard as both of our top sights are reasonably central. We also suss out travel. As we’re driving, we don’t want to waste time negotiating traffic into the centre so we find a hotel on the city outskirts ... read more

Piecing together the remnants of my original 2020 European trip (amalgamation of the travel vouchers that were issued when cash refunds were refused) proved more problematic than construction of the original trip, and numerous “Plan Bs” evolved. Such was the case with my journey from Spain to the Netherlands/Denmark area of Europe. Originally, my only time in France was a couple of days offered on an accompanied tour of several European countries, but Plan B found me with a 16-day tour of France and a 7-day interval between Madrid and Paris. This silver lining gave me an opportunity to spend some time in a city I have always found appealing, Barcelona, Spain. THU, 16 JUN 2022: Europamundo services came to an end when the Great Iberian Tour returned to Madrid towards the end of the day. ... read more
