The air felt different in Barcelona. Anyone who has traveled knows the sensation of stepping off the plane and onto the "bridge" and how you can smell and feel the difference in the air. The air felt heavier, and perhaps it was just my imagination, but even from the airport I felt like I could smell the salt in the air. My flight landed about an hour before Amber's, so I sat and waited by the gate for her. It was fun listening to people speaking Catalan and Spanish - it sounded so easy and smooth, especially compared to the often fiery sounding German. People had colour on their skin... it already felt like a whole new world. As I waited I also took the time to grab the world's LARGEST tourist map. For some reason ... read more

HOLA!! I realise it has been a while since I last wrote and I am not going to try to play catch up so a few days of this holiday will forever remain a mystery. Whatś new? Well we found the coolest club in the world last night. It is this shots bar where every drink is an adventure. We started with flaming shots that lit the entire bar bench on fire, moved on to cream topped shots the bar tender assured us could only be done by licking them while they sat on the bar and destroyed ourselves with tobasco-infused shots just to name a few. The highlight of Chupitas! however was the Monica Lewisky shot. Sure to cause a stir, it is served in a cream-covered dildo. Our new found friend Ciprian did the ... read more

Today was my fifth and final day at the Esplai Port d'Aiguadolc sailing camp. The first thing we did that day at camp was play a game called 'ninja'. It was a fun game that helped improve your reflexes. Then the instructors split the kids into 2 groups. The older kids (which included me) went out on a sailboat called the Cristalmina with a 5 horsepower motor. The younger kids went out on 2 smaller boats. That day, I learned how to tie types of knots, how to raise the sails, and how to steer the boat. I had a blast on the water. That afternoon, after lunch, the older kid group went down to the beach to surf again. I think the waves yesterday were the best waves I have had so far. Too bad ... read more

July 4th- Week 5 Today is the Fourth of July. Too bad they don’t celebrate in Rome. The students all got together and cooked burgers and drank beer. It was a good little celebration. We couldn’t celebrate too hard because we had a big accounting exam the next day. July 5th- Today we didn’t have a good Accounting class. A lot of the students didn’t finish the HW assignment because we were study for the exam. We had to cut class short because we were not prepared. The day turned around because we visited a vineyard called ViniPallaVicini. The site was beautiful. It’s crazy how long it takes to make wine, 8years! The site was hundreds of years old. At the end they left us with 15 bottles to finish with the group. Needless to say ... read more

We woke up a bit earlier than necessary so we would have time after breakfast and before our bus down, so Manoli could take photos from the housing area above us. The night before we had taken a stroll up there, without her camera, and the view of the town in the valley below was awesome. You could also see the whole hostal grounds. After taking a number of photos, we returned to the hostal to await our bus trip down to Andorra La Vela to catch our bus back to Barcelona. Novatel may not be as cheap as some bus services, but they took us up the mountain to our hostal and picked us up there again to take us down to the bus terminal. I don't think any of the other bus companies do ... read more

We had thought originally of going to Montserrat, a pretty much all day affair, but we hadn't seen the key sights in Barcelona yet, except for La Rambla. So, out we went, by about 9am, and first headed for the Parc Guell, a showcase of Antoni Gaudi's work. We took the metro from Paral-lel to Villcarca on the L3 towards Triniat Nova (For you folks who might like an idea of how to get to Parc Guell from La Rival area). The metros cost about 1.45 Euros for a one-time 90 minute ride. we got off at the right station, and after a brief moment of lostness, rectified by a nice old Spanish lady (the park is off the top of our map, so...), we saw the stairs/escalators up to the park. You have to ride ... read more

We left the hostel early, like 8:30am, but still no WiFi! I'm still not totally sure if the 24-hour ticket we bought was supposed to be good for the bus to Marco Polo Airport, but we were able to take the vaporetto to the bus station, and then the bus to the airport without incident. Since we arrived several hours before our flight (It wasn't even listed yet!), we chilled for a while and waited for it to show on the list so we'd know where to check in. Marco Polo Airport is pretty good sized, with over 60 check-in counters for dozens or airlines from Qatar to AliItalia to RyanAir. Finally, we check with a flight information desk and they told us the counter should open soon and be like number 82 or 83, so ... read more

We decided to go to Barcelona for a few days as it was only a few hours away by train. I was hoping to buy quite a bit in Barcelona as it was apparently cheap and there aren’t that much places to shop where we are staying down south of France. On the train trip to Barcelona we got told we didn’t need to get seat numbers although we soon found out everyone else that hoped on had seat numbers so we were hoping we didn’t have to move to other seats. When we got to the train station in Barcelona we had to wait two hours at the train station to get seat numbers for our train trip back. Once we had booked our seat numbers we took a taxi to our apartment. It took ... read more

We all loved Barcelona. The shopping, the architecture and the culture! We decided to visit as a mini break from our four week stay in St Genies, as it was only a four hour train trip away. We booked an apartment right on La Rambla for three nights. Great location and atmosphere, but unfortunately that atmosphere and noise never switched off giving us very little sleep. We made sure we had somewhere with Wifi so we could catch up on some internet usage and skyping. We certainly hang out for contact with everyone at home after being away for so long. We started our visit with the ultra touristy open topped bus circuit. The commentary was very lacking but it was good to get a feel for the main areas and see a relatively big area ... read more
