We took our time getting moving this day. Jacob is trying to establish a structure for school work and we were tired from the walk. By afternoon we were ready for the beach. On our way we found a perfect pastry shop with excellent ham and cheese croissants. It's hard to pick a shop, there are so many; this is something I wish we could import to Saskatoon. Christie's is good, but I'd rather have more competition and not in the guise of muffin shops. The beaches are long and even here there is architecture. At one end of the beach there is a huge bronze/copper (?) fish. I want to get closer to it to see just what it is. At the other end of the beach is a sky scraper with interesting design and ... read more

We had a travel day with very little to speak of, except saying our goodbyes to Butch. The apartment in Barcelona, the Raval area is just as it was described with rough edges on the outside and cozy and comfortable on the inside. The next day we explored our area and tried to go to the beach. That means that we walked down the Rambla and through the big market and down the Rambla right to the docks. We hear from home that it is cold and keep telling ourselves that mid November is winter, but here it is warm. The sun shines on our shoulders, we're wearing t-shirts, we smile unconsciously, hard to believe it is winter. Walking these streets you have to look up. The architecture is breath taking. Yes Gaudi's work is everywhere ... read more

Barcelona 11 and 12 September 2013 This was a city I was looking forward to visiting! We arrived at the campsite which was 30 minutes out from the city by bus. We checked in and then walked down the beach, which we parked next to. People were playing soccer and fishing. All the campers were lined up and we always look at the number plates to see where people are from. We spotted one that had a kangaroo stuck over the EU symbol so we decided to knock on their door. We met Grant and Helena from Adelaide and his sister Sharon from the Gold Coast. We ended up having dinner with them at the campsite restaurant, and had a lovely time. They had bought their camper 3 years ago and stored it in France over ... read more

Today was supposed to be more sighseeing but we ran into a few issues. First off Emily got serious sun stroke from the beach yesterday. The heat is insane here. I don't feel like eating sometimes just because it is so hot. She decided to stay in the air conditioning for the beginning of the day. Avery and I started out with the intention of seeing another cathedral, however we forgot to bring clothing to cover our shoulders. We didn't have that problem yesterday so we didn't think to pack a sweater or something. Regardless, we took a lot of pictures of the buildings and statues outside of the building. In the afternoon Emily was feeling better so we all went shopping together in La Rambla and then out for dinner. We are looking forward to ... read more

Here are some pictures of our view from the hotel. I wanted to test the picture uploads to make sure everything works alright. This blog isn't the most intuitive so I apologize that I don't know how to make it a little more appealing. I'll see what I can do. We are about a block away from Las Ramblas, which is Barcelona's tourist hot spot. It is the most central part of the city and has a number of shops, restaurants and attractions. We took a short walk around earlier today but we were all so tired we didn't make far. For lunch we stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe. I know we have one in Ottawa but everything else seemed a little too overwhelming. We didn't want another starbucks experience. It must be famous here ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » La Rambla July 31st 2012

Oh lord. It can’t really be late July can it? Well apparently time slows for no man, least of all a hapless twenty-something college student. As my memory isn’t getting any better, it’s probably best if I try to tie things up with the blog. There may be one or two more entries after this, depending on how motivated I’m feeling. Life has gone on, I attended a wedding, actually visited a national park in the States, and wasted an awful lot of time demeaning myself for cash tips (no, I’m not a stripper). Digesting that in the broader context of life spent traveling there and back again will have to come later, for now let’s chat Barcelona. Welcome to Barcelona! Let's not beat around here, the city's wonderful. I’d caught a train from Madrid, so ... read more

These lines I write while crossing the Spanish countryside; we are heading to France. The wooded hills and pastoral landscapes are bringing much needed relaxation and reflection to the trip. Down the train, a gaggle of loud girls seems to be having a great time. I didn’t know Europe had obnoxiously loud girls too! (No offense, obnoxiously loud girls.) Barcelona was a blast. The gothic architecture, artistic influence, and laid-back atmosphere gave this coastal city a truly unique feel. Catalán, a provincial dialect, is still an official language, and reflects regional differences further exacerbated by the recent economic crisis. Speaking of which, we ran into even more fervent protesting in Barcelona. On one night, labor unions had organized a large gathering in the city streets. Waving flags and shouting through PA systems on the back of ... read more

The past week has been lots of travel. I should have kept up on the blog better but the time flew by really fast. I feel like I was just starting to really settle in to Phnom Penh. I had sort of found a rhythm to the day and the weeks. I wondered if going to Europe would make me miss home more and set me back in terms of culture shock. I had overnight stays both directions in Bangkok. I grow to love that city more everytime I go. It's sort of like the New York City of SE Asia. It has a great energy to it and the Thai people are really wonderful. Bangkok isn't as gritty as Phnom Penh. So what do I mean by gritty? Well, here's an example. Last night I ... read more

Fortunately, the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain and not on the coast. It seems that we were dodging liquid sunshine across the Mediterranean. Our first stop was in Malaga which used to be famous or infamous for the lager louts who would come down on holiday looking for suds and sex and soccer. But now Malaga is a beautiful old city which has done well with its infusion of EU money. The entire port has been refashioned and is a showpiece that can vie with Barcelona’s striking waterfront. The home of Picasso and the Costa Del Sol, this Andalusian city reflects both Moorish and Roman influences. The city is just coming alive from its long winter slumber and all the sidewalk cafes and shops are opening just in time for the arrival of ... read more

On Wednesday morning at 5am, Emily and I left London for Barcelona. The flight went well and we made it easily into the city. We were starving so we went to McDonalds to eat right off. It was fun to go around the city and see some of the same places that Steve and I saw when we were there this summer. We checked into our hostel, which was very nice. Some of our friends had told us to stay there, and we were glad that we had listened to them. After taking a quick nap, Emily and I went out to explore the city. We walked along the beach and found a cute resturant to eat at. We had tapas and our first sangria! It was delicious. Then we played on the beach for a ... read more
