With the snow and cold of Germany in winter and no chance of going back to San Diego for Christmas, Kate and I decided to find a warm place to go during Christmas. Our local travel agent suggested either Egypt or the Canary Islands. Since we prefer islands to sand we choose to go to the island of Tenerife, a Spanish possession for over 500 years. We were going to arrange our trip to be gone over Christmas but the travel agent informed us that 1) there was a 200 Euro ($240) per person surcharge for staying over Christmas and 2) he found a special deal for a week at a very nice resort, including airfare, transfer to and from the resort, breakfast and dinner each day, and located two blocks from the beach, plus ... read more

The trip to the Canary Islands was excellent. Our flight was to leave Granada at 7am for a short flight to Madrid, where we would have a brief 1 hour layover. as many things go in Spain, out flight out of Granada was late taking off, we landed in Madrid with only 20 min until out plane took off for the Islands. Here you get off your plane and then get onto a bus where then you drive around the runways for a while until you get to the terminal. so that took a few more minutes, by the time we got to the area where we should be able to get our flight, we were out of luck. even though the computers still said, LAST CALL, we pleaded with the Iberia Air people to ... read more

Where does every Brit go when they want sun & a cheap holiday? Tenerife! Nikki & I had been dating for about seven months at the time so decided we should go away on our first holiday together. We had been to Rome for a weekend but we wanted to go somewhere for two whole weeks of sun, relaxation, sun, nice food, sun & most importantly FUN....oh did I mention sun? lol. One of the things I love most about Nikki is that she’s different from most other women when it comes to money, most women I know/have met aren’t always “good” with money (could just be the women I know lol) but Nikki is always looking for the best deal or wanting to barter with people, I am the opposite, if I find something I ... read more

Since we booked our trip to the Canary Islands in Januray, we never thought April 20 would come! But, it finally did, and the week was amazing! Laura, Natalie and I left Granada the night before and took an overnight bus trip to Madrid, where we waited at the airport for our time to board our flight. By 3 pm that afternoon, we were checked into our hotel, only 150 meters from the ocean, and were sitting next to the pool soaking in the rays of the Canaries. Next to the coast of Africa, we knew the sun was a bit stronger than we were used to so sunscreen was a necessity, something Natalie and I would learn later! The first night we were there, after traveling for 24 hours without much sleep, we went to ... read more

Lanzorote is a Spainish Island off the west coast of Africa, just adjastent to Moroco. Takes about 5 hours flight from London. Lanzorote is a one of the 5 major island of the Canaries island group. The others are Tenirief, Grand canaria, Fortventura and La Palma islands. When the flight approached the Island, my heart simply sank - all I could see was one big mass of charred and blackened earth. Nothing else. No greenery, no trees or plants - just black soil everywhere. It was very strange feeling as if being on an another planet. After landing, the coach took us to our appartments. Very strange experience to travel on such black ground for mile on end. I stayed in a nice self catering appartment over looking the see in Puero Del Carmen, one of the ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the sixth and final post I'll do about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004. The last post covered my time in La Palma and this one covers my time in Gran Canaria. The last stop of our Atlantic cruise was at Gran Canaria, it was a short stop and all of us was pretty worn by now me and my mother with the aftermath of the winter flu and my uncle in the early stage of it and my father from basically just having to watch the rest of us. In Gran Canaria we went to a park which symbolized the continents of the world. It was nice but we were not in form and shape to really enjoy it. I guess this relaxing cruise ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the fifth of six posts I'll make about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 together with my parents and my Uncle Anders. The last post covered my brief visit to Madeira and this one covers my time in La Palma. By the time we reached La Palma the winter flu had finally released it's grip on me, I was still a bit weak but at least the worst was over, but our travel party was not spared, it had just moved over to my mother instead. As a result she missed La Palma and is therefore absent from all photos from this day. Me, my father and Anders however set out to explore Santa Cruz de la Palma which is the local capital of the ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the first of six posts I'll make about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 together with my parents and my uncle Anders. This post covers my time on Lanzarote. Our ship, the M/S Carousel, is an impressive feat of engineering built in 1971. She had several restaurants and bars, gyms, cinema theaters and lounges. We were allowed to eat and drink without limits while we were on boards and there was always entertainment running in the theaters, there were concerts, stand up comedy shows, cinema movies and casinos, all at our pleasure. This is what living a luxurious life looks like. The first of these stops was at Lanzarote, it was a fairly brief stop and in my opinion there wasn't really much to see ... read more

I stayed in Playa Blanca which is a quiet resort and perfect for people who want to get away from it all. It has a beautiful beach complete with watersports. There isn't much going on in the evening in Playa Blanca. Timanfaya National Park is a must see in Lanarote. Most of the trip there is spent on the coach as you are not allowed to walk around the volcanoes. The scenery is breathtaking to look at. I did get to stop off at the visitors car park and have a demostration of how hot it is just a few metres below the surface. I took a camel ride too across a small part of the park. Jameos del Agua was another of my favourite places to visit. There was an underwater lagoon that has blind ... read more
