The Tenerife Experiment: Download the movie from www.webtrance.co.za/Travelblog/Media/Tenerife-Experiment-July-2004.wmv but because this movie server is in South Africa, please right-click on the link and save the file somewhere you remember on your hard drive before trying to watch it because there are spinning things in the movie which aren't optimized for streaming.  Tuesday 22 nd June Day 17: Woke up this morning on a mission to IAC, the Spanish observatory perched on a hillside near Mt. Teide, the island's reigning volcano. My mission had started some month ago when I found out that Tenerife had a superior observatory, and that much of the work done there is solar observation. In other words, here is an observatory that functions d... read more

Sunday 20 th June Day 15: I wake with anticipation, but also with some stress. Will my wife and four year old make it on time, or will I spend the day at the airport trying to figure out where they are? Their flight goes from Cape Town to Joburg then on to Madrid, where there is a four hour wait before catching their connection to Tenerife. That's a lot of flying. Waking at 8.00 AM, I still don't leave the apartment before 9.00 and even though I drive at speeds well in excess of the posted 120 KMH limit, I manage to miss the turnoff for the north airport. By the time I arrive at the airport I'm a nervous wreck, remembering my wife telling me, “you better be there when we arrive”, however everything ... read more

Thursday 18th Day 12: Breakfast is overlooking the Las Palmas beach front, and what a wonderful sight. White beaches, palm trees and the winding promenade accompanying the natural sweep of the beach, plus lots of people in swimwear abound, but there isn’t time for too much sight seeing here because I need to get to Tenerife as quickly as possible, and this is why I’m taking the Fred Olsen jet-foil ferry, which makes the 4 hour crossing in one hour. Although it’s only 9.00 AM, the first ferry has already left at 8.00 AM and the next one is at 5.00 PM, so I elect to go by taxi from Las Palmas to another port, an hour’s drive away, where there is a jet-foil ferry at ... read more

Wednesday 17th Day 11: Today I did breakfast but it didn’t matter because even though we could see Las Palmas from 9.00 AM in the morning they kept us waiting for a pilot until nearly 10.00 PM, by which time I’d gone all around the ship taking what photos I thought I may have missed but probably didn’t. Although I am not in a hurry to get off the ship, but after 11 days at sea I’m also looking forward to being ashore, so this is a bit of a contradiction. Consequently, I did some serious pacing, standing on the bridge with my binoculars and making the Captain nervous enough to actually offer me an explanation for why they were making us wait, something to do with regulati... read more

From London Kelly (18 at the time) and I flew to Tenerife in the Canary Islands just south of Spain (technically part of Spain, but I don't think you can really count it as having been to Spain itself). Upon arrival at our hotel - originally booked for Mom and Kel - it was very nicely (hmm) made apparent to us that we were not allowed to stay there unless accompained by someone older than 23. Problems! Phone call to mom (who was only suppose to join us in a few days) and another rushed pack-and-fly landed mom in Tenerife with us for a two-week girls trip. We spent the next two weeks on the beach and in the sun. We did two island tours which definitely did not agree with me - on a boat ... read more

During February of 2002, when I was living in Spain I went to 1 of the 7 Canary Islands, Tenerife. The Canary Islands are a part of Spain and are located in the Atlantic Ocean, off of the African west coast. We went there for Mardi Gras. Most of the world knows the Mardi Gras celbration in Rio and New Orleans . . . but in Europe . . . it is well understood that the biggest party is in the Canary Islands. We were there for most of the celebration. They had daily parades and plenty of activities to do at night also. We stayed within walking distance of the ocean and swiming in the Atlantic was probably my favorite part. I was in the water by noon everyday and swam basicly all day. The ... read more

I’m not sure why he did it, im not sure what possible reason he could have for doing it, im not sure he even thought about the consequences of his actions, but dear reader, he did it, he shaved his legs. Let me take you back to the start of the day, I had awoken from my beautiful peach schnapps (as mentioned before, this was not the description I had used when discussing it wit h the lads) and still had the faint moment before your awake dream, that I would awake in a big double bed with a beautiful lady next to me, the African heat pouring through my windows and fresh coffee already brewed. Eyes open, not quite what I had imagined, Wideboy was walking around showing off his tan, beer in hand and ... read more

Sleep was difficult that first night, the serenading continued for an impressive few hours, fueled by Alcopops and the occasional flash from wideboy, i have a feeling he has no boundries, cracking, i share a room with him.. we went out that night, myself ginge and wideboy ran out of our room, hoping to put some distance between us, the cockroaches(not the the girls across the vista) and the alluring brown decor.. to the other lads flat, white walls, view of an actual garden, english translation not spanish, tiled floors, shower that works and light, i knew i should have paid more attention to the ceefax page which we booked our holiday from. how remiss of myself, let me introduce my traveling companions, ginge, dipper (dear reader dipper is also 7up, his nickname will change as ... read more

As we rolled on throught the countryside of tenerife, past los christanos, past the pub that my dad allegedly ran off to, head down, theyll be a bar bill in their with my name on it no doubt, always could rely on him for that. into las americas, somehow the islands authorities have managed to come up with a name that drums up comparisons to las vegas, desert town with bright lights, dreams and adventures, cocktails and gambling, fortunes made and fortunes lost..clever marketing that.. las americas, bright lights, slight smell of vomit, Wiagn pier pub, high rise buildings, england flags and ireland flans next to each other on the 37th floor or casa dona lola hotel, thought about the irony of those 2 flags co habititng with each other, but then i realised that words ... read more
