Where does every Brit go when they want sun & a cheap holiday? Tenerife!
Nikki & I had been dating for about seven months at the time so decided we should go away on our first holiday together. We had been to Rome for a weekend but we wanted to go somewhere for two whole weeks of sun, relaxation, sun, nice food, sun & most importantly FUN....oh did I mention sun? lol. One of the things I love most about Nikki is that she’s different from most other women when it comes to money, most women I know/have met aren’t always “good” with money (could just be the women I know lol) but Nikki is always looking for the best deal or wanting to barter with people, I am the opposite, if I find something I want at a price I’m willing to pay I will.
When it came to booking our first holiday Nikki gave me a price she was willing to spend, as I recall “We’ll never find anything for that!” was my reply when she told me the price she was willing to pay. I searched for hours in a sweaty internet cafe looking for her
price but couldn’t find anything, so I decided to lie about the price & pay the difference myself (Something I have done several times since).
A few days later we were in the north of Tenerife, a place called Puerto De La Cruz, we had a nice little apartment not far from the beach & a supermarket just up the road. Tenerife is a volcanic island, there is only one white sand beach all the rest are either, rocks or black sand, the one closest to our hotel was rock. I (at the time) was a pool person, Nikki a beach person, in the spirit of trying new things we went to the beach, Nikki got straight into the sea, which is what I should have done but instead I got in slowly. As I walked in a wave began to approach me that I totally misjudged, it knocked me over on to the sharp jagged rocks cutting my arm & hands, after that I was not impressed with the beach at all so decided to give the sea a miss & sunbathe.
Because of the fact Tenerife is a volcanic island it has a cloudy sky almost
Me trying to open a bottle of wine
I ended up breaking the bottle opener all the time, but you can still get burnt BELIEVE ME! On one of the days we went to a swimming pool near to the sea, every now & then we would get in the swimming pool but we spent most of the day sunbathing & talking. As I said before Nikki & I hadn’t been together long & this was our first “holiday” together, being extremely soppy we were looking in to each other’s eyes all day whilst laying there, by the end of the day we were burnt & guess what? It was on only one side of our face! I had turned my head to the left to look at Nikki & she had turned her head to the right, together we had one burnt face (or one not burnt face depending how you look at it lol). Thinking back it is very funny but at the time I don’t think either of us were impressed lol.
We spent most of our holiday relaxing but booked some trips, we booked with the holiday rep at the hotel, who was only temping as the permanent rep was ill (We should have known something would go wrong when
we found that out). On one of the trips we paid to go to a water park, the only downside was we had to wake up very early to go as it was in the south of the island “Wait at the bus stop at 7:30am & someone will pick you up” we got told. At 8:30 there was still no bus, after a small argument we got told we could go the following day, not impressed with having to wake up early a second day running we reluctantly agreed but guess what? THE SAME THING HAPPENED!!! We went back to the hotel & called the rep to complain “I’m sorry I’ve just had a look at the timetable we only run that trip once a week that’s why there was no bus, but it’s on tomorrow if you would like to go?” After using some words I won’t write on here I told the rep to shove the trip up his a**e as there was no way I was waking up at 6:30 for the third day running.
We pretty much spent the rest of the holiday eating & sunbathing, not much of a cultural holiday but then
again there isn’t much culture in Tenerife lol.
