In the province of Cadiz there are three towns which form the famous 'sherry triangle' of Spain: Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barrameda, and El Puerto de Santa Maria. Any bottle labelled as 'sherry' must have come from this region, which has been producing wines since the times of the Phoenicians (1100BC). Having had absolutely no appreciation for sherry in the past, I decided to visit a bodega in Jerez to sample some different types and educate my palate. Arriving on a sunny May bank holiday, I went to the Gonzalez Byass bodega near the centre of town, where they produce Tio Pepe brand sherry. The company was founded in 1835 when Manuel Maria Gonzalez Angel, under advice from his uncle the famous Tio Pepe, founded a winery in Jerez. Soon after he created a ... read more

Wednesday 2nd Februay 2011 After saying our farewells we took to the road again heading west past the rock of Gibraltar to the point where the med meets the Atlantic ocean near the town of Tarifa. Here we turned north west towards along the Costa de la Luz. The scenery changed driving across a sweeping plane we passed Cabo de Trafalgar off which Lord Nelson achieved victory and met his death on 21st October 1805. Further on we passed another location that saw a British naval victory Cadiz where Francis Drake destroyed the Spanish fleet in 1588 prompting Philip II OF Spain to assemble another fleet – the Armada which was destroyed at the hands of the English with the help of the weather and sounded the death knell of Spanish maritime power. On to Puerto ... read more

Made a picture for my collection of Merry-go-rounds. Its a beautiful one made in 1900 and is on the mainsquare in Jerez and it still looks very original. Visited Cadiz for the first time. A nice city with an old centre with small streets and rather high buildings still from the time they had to build within the city walls. Lots of beautiful churches and again a cathedral. Nevert knew they had so good and long beaches here, Passed by train on my way to Cadiz the sherry town Puerto de Santa Maria, a place I visited long time ago many times buying sherry. That time early till mid seventies it was a kind of quiet village and they even still had some local freight distribution by donkey. Now it looks so much different with high ... read more

Walked a bit in Jerez de la Frontera. Not really exciting town but first time to visit so all is new. In my early previous life I bought sherry and since my mainsupplier had his bodega in Puerto de Santa Maria I never took the opportunity to see Jerez where the most bodega s are like Sandeman, Gonzales Byas, Harvey and so on About the cathedral of Jerez you can say 1 thing. It s huge. In the mainstreet there are as in the other streets lots of banks probably waiting to be rationalized by the crisis. There are still a lot of pappa-mamma shops who would not survive in the northern countries of Europe, But it looks nice and a pity that they will disappear slowly slowly. Had a late dinner on the main marketsquare ... read more

Arrived Puerto Atocha at 9.55 found my way to luggage control, found my way to checking in and reached the train with a bit running, just imagine, at 10.04. Jerez - September 20 Our trip then headed back into Spain, to a small town called Jerez (pronounced more like Hereth) which is the home for Sherry. We had a large hotel room which was great to spread out. Tapas for dinner, before an orientation walk around the town. The following day we had a visit to the famous Tio Pepe winery (called Gonzalez Byass) with an informative tour regarding Sherry and Brandy making, as well as the famous signatures on their barrels that they had collected for over 100 years. There is also a tradition at this winery to look after the local cellar mouse. They leave out each day a glass of wine, and a tray of food, complete with tiny ladder so the mouse can reach it. The family history holds that this ... read more

This morning we had an early breakfast and started our drive to Jerez to visit the Royal Foundation for the Equestrian Arts. Our drive was uneventful until a large truck prevented us from seeing our next exit until it was too late. We continued on into the city of Cadiz hoping for the best but it wasn't long before we were lost. We stopped at a service station and asked for directions. While the attendant was explaining the way a truck driver came over and said that he was going to Jerez and that we could follow him. We followed him until we were back on the main highway and then waived a thank-you as we continued on our way. Once we arrived in Jerez we quickly learned that driving in Spain you need to rely ... read more
