Leaving Oporto proved really difficult, partly because we’d grown so fond of the place but mainly as a result of an aberration from our previously reliable Tom Tom. To be fair, it did as it was instructed which was to get us out of the city by the shortest route and on to our next destination of Salamanca, Spain. What we didn’t know though was that this shortest route would involve negotiating some of the city’s very, very narrow back alleys. It was a both wing mirrors flat to the car job as we slowly crawled our way down the steep, winding streets which seemed endless and to be getting thinner as we went on. Paint from other cars scarred the edges of walls and all the time I was thinking “I hope this isn’t a ... read more

I am back! and still sick..:( But good news, I am going to the doctor tonight and hopefully will get some antibiotics so I will feel better tomorrow. Yesterday we went to Jerez de la Frontera and Conil. The day started out okay, we arrived early at the meeting point-bonus points since we were late the day before! But, I sat down on the side of a planter waiting for the other girls to arrive and when I got on the bus something was biting my arm and I realized I was COVERED in red fire ants. Needless to say, I panicked and ran out of the bus and probably looked like a fool trying to get them off of me. Oh well, then I went back on the bus and realized my seat was covered ... read more

February 29, 2008 Today Katie, Mary Ellen, Julie, and I went to Jerez de la Frontera. We took the bus there, and we had no idea what we were going to do, but we wanted to go to a Bodega (winery). Once we got there, and found a map, we eventually made our way to Alvaro Domecq, the bodega Mary Ellen read was one of the best. When we got there we had no idea what we were supposed to do for a tour, so we walked around looking lost. Finally an older man asked us if we were here for a tour; we said yes, and he went to find us some help. Another man told us that the lady that gives tours is gone, but if we wanted, he could give us a brief ... read more

Now I’m back… This is from (Feb 13th-17th) The flight back was shorter than the one on the way home, literally and physically draining wise. I am feeling healthier now maybe Spain’s warm weather is helping to cure my throat infection. It gets cooler out at night like 45-50 degrees and is about 65-70 average during the day. The first day I got back I just slept a bunch and got ready for the next day of class on Thursday. The day went pretty well but became a little hard to handle when I felt overwhelmed and like I needed a little break to think and let my emotions out. That happens quite often… My teachers tell me “tranquila, tranquila” (calm, calm) so they are being understanding and helpful with what I will need. It ... read more

We took the ferry over from Tanger to Tarifa, Spain only to discover that we had missed the last bus from Tarifa to Jerez and the next bus the next morning would get us there too late to catch our flight. Matt, Egan, and Anna headed down to see if the rental car place was open while the rest of us transferred our ever growing luggage over to a cafe to sit. They came back without a rental car but with two taxis that had agreed to take us to Jerez for 120 Euros per vehicle, which worked out to 35 Euros a piece...much cheaper than having to rebook our flight!! Once we got into Jerez we were so happy to see our old friend, Hotel Ibis, and decided to stay there for the night. ... read more
