After breakfast, we headed out for our morning tour of the Albaicin and the La Cartuja Monastery with an official guide from Granada. The Albaicin, is the old Moorish quarter of Granada. We visited the church of San Nicolas, where we got a great view of the Alhambra from the top of the hill. Then we headed off to La Cartuja monastery. The monastery once housed Carthusian monks. It is one of the most decorated monasteries in Spain. There was an entire room full of paintings painted by one of the monks that stayed at the monastery. After the tour, we had a little free time before we headed off to the Alhambra. We had a quick bite to eat at a nearby shawarma place near the hotel. We also had time to go to a ... read more

After breakfast, we started our bus journey from Madrid to Granada. A surprise stopover in Toledo, allowed us to once again visit the picturesque city. In Toledo, we headed to the Mercado de San Agustin food market, recommended by our tour leader, Nihar, for a quick brunch before the continued journey to Granada. In Granada, we settled into our room at the Hotel Los Angeles, a charming colourful hotel found near the city center. It was probably one of the better hotels we stayed at during our trip. Then we headed out to the city center for dinner where we devoured a delicious paella at a local restaurant. As we left the restaurant, we got lost trying to find our way back to the hotel. Luckily, we had help from Erin’s phone GPS. We finally reached ... read more

Geo: 37.1882, -3.60667On this, our last full day in Spain, we were up early to catch a 7:30 AM bus up the hill to the Alhambra. We had an 8:30 AM entry time to the Nazrid Palace (Palacios Nazaries), so we walked down the hill from the main entrance to queue up at the Justice Gate near the entrance to the palace. It was a cool overcast day that turned sunny by mid-morning, a glorious day for a stroll through the last and greatest Moorish palace, village, fort, gardens, and stronghold in Europe. We'll just use our photos to illustrate the splendor and wonder of this place, including the Palacios Nazaries, the Charles V Palace, the Alcazaba (the fort, the original "red castle," Alhambra), the Medina (village), and the Generalife Gardens. After a full morning at the Alhambra, it was ... read more

Geo: 37.1765, -3.59793After checking out, we headed to the train station to catch a noon train to Granada, our last stop on this blitz through Spain. This train was a bit of a milk run to Granada, albeit quite comfortable, with the last segment by bus because the train tracks were under repair. It was a short taxi ride from the train station to our hotel in the old town area of Granada, the Hotel Anacapri. After check-in and dumping our bags in the room, we navigated our way to Plaza Nueva to pick up the city card, Bono Turistico, that we'd purchased online to cover admission to the major sites, including the Alhambra, the Cathedral, and the Royal Chapel. We have an early 8:30 AM entry time to the Nazrid Palace on the Alhambra site tomorrow. Our walking ... read more

Well, we got up in time for breakfast because today was the day to see the Alhambra. The Alhambra is a collection of palaces built by Moorish sultans and Catholic monarchs surrounded by fortified walls on the tops of two hills. The climbing up the steep hill was great training for the Camino but Madalyn could have done without the heat and high humidity. At the wall map by the entrance we met our fabulous guide, Margarita. It is important to get your tickets ahead of time because access times are strictly controlled to prevent tourists from over running the place and having our own personal guide was heavenly. There were lots of people but it didn't seem overcrowded. Margarita showed us the gardens as we strolled toward the Alcazaba, the oldest part built for military ... read more

Well, sleep deprivation caught up with us today; sleeping very late, having breakfast just before the local lunch time. We walked to a main bus stop area and took a mini-bus to the Alhambra, to learn how to get there for our reserved tour tomorrow. The Alhambra, having begun as a defensive fort, is fairly high above the city, and the temperature today was warmer than yesterday, forecasted to be 34°C. We were glad to take the bus, then walked down to explore that route, and to continue walking in preparation for the Camino a week from now. We plan to walk up tomorrow. Back down in the city, we stopped for cold water and iced coffee then followed Rick Steves' self-guided walk of the historic center. That gave us more detail and history of the ... read more

We left the rain behind in London as we jetted off to Granada and blue skies. Gary has been to Spain before when he was in the Navy and it is Madalyn's first visit. We checked into our hotel to drop off our luggage and hit the streets. Our hotel is on a large, busy square near the base of the Alhambra, the main attraction in Granada which we'll visit in a day or two. Still recovering from lack of sleep we managed to tour the Cathedral of Granada. The pipe organ is huge with horizontal pipes as well as vertical, we wished it had been playing. Lots of gold leaf, paintings of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and saints. You don't light candles for fulfilling your prayers any more, you flick a switch to turn on ... read more

Reaching the end of our travels in Andalucia and the final two amazing buildings that I wanted to visit, the Mezquita in Cordoba and the Alhambra in Granada. The Mezquita or Santa Maria cathedral is a wonderful building, never seen any building quite like it. There’s a special atmosphere, even with the large numbers of visitors. The huge area with the repeating columns with their red and white striped curved tops makes the space seem both infinitely large and quite intimate as no one space is particularly big. It would have been amazing to see it with more than one door open and the light playing through the columns as it was designed to do. The site was originally a Roman temple, then Visigoths, then a mosque that was extended three times, then a cathedral. Many ... read more

My friend moved to Granada for all of July month, so together with another friend we decided to rent a car, throw two bags in it with some clothes and go on the 8 hour drive from Barcelona to there a Friday afternoon after work. It was a long drive but the closer we got the more beautiful the views got. We arrived at night and it was impossible to find parking in the hills on the narrow roads where my friend lived, so we parked in the center and went up by foot. Theres a lot of climbing to do in this city, but the small roads, the stones and little details everywhere you look make you completely forget about it. We got to bed pretty late since we were talking like crazy - we ... read more
