My friend moved to Granada for all of July month, so together with another friend we decided to rent a car, throw two bags in it with some clothes and go on the 8 hour drive from Barcelona to there a Friday afternoon after work. It was a long drive but the closer we got the more beautiful the views got.
We arrived at night and it was impossible to find parking in the hills on the narrow roads where my friend lived, so we parked in the center and went up by foot. Theres a lot of climbing to do in this city, but the small roads, the stones and little details everywhere you look make you completely forget about it.
We got to bed pretty late since we were talking like crazy - we saw the famous Alhambra from my friends window with the lights on at night which was quite stunning. Granada turned out to be too hot in summer - 43 degrees and baking sun - go a bit before or after if you can. Much cheaper than Barcelona though and so so pretty.
Next morning we had breakfast in a small cafe and
walked down the streets and took the car down to Cabo de Gata to see the coast and beach. Really beautiful place, still and clear water and dark cliffs along the coast.
After getting thrown away from the beach (no dogs allowed), we took the car up the coast and found a small pathway going down from one of the cliffs. It led down to a small old building/factory of some sort, with some old pools where the fresh seawater was running through. We climbed down here and went for a swim and had the place all to ourselves - super idyllic.
We chilled there for quite a while but got disturbed later by a big group of snorkelers who where intrigued by the place as well. So we packed the things and went back to Granada.
In the evening we went further up the hills in Granada and saw a bunch of small cave restaurants, many of them did flamingo shows as well. We had a nice dinner outside by one of the cave restaurants with a nice view over the city.
In the evening we ended up having some beers with some people on a
small plaza after a concert had just ended. Got to bed a bit late again - and the morning after we had get up fairly early to go see the Alhambra before going home.
Didn't have quite enough time there but the place is really worth a visit, its and old Citadel and Palace and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has a crazy view over the cities small white houses in the hills. We didn't have enough time in the end to go to the palace itself which I have been told later was the best part - so guess I have to return for this.
After a small lunch in the center (free tapas when you order beers), we had to go on the long drive back to Barcelona, although I felt like spending more time there the 40 degrees where OK to get away from.
