I looked at the painting and I looked at the Andalucian artist holding it up to me and I was set to wondering at the little painter's cardboard-flat countenance which was being pressed that much flatter by the beautiful bounding colors on the canvas she held next to her face and when I focused back on the painting I suddenly saw the depth of her and she became yet another travel book that I had seriously misjudged. We've been to a lot of places in Spain over the years but this was our first trip to Granada. Our friend Raphael back in Vis had spoken highly of the city and having visited far more distant places for far more anemic reasons we flew into Granada after a week in Naples. Got a nice room at the ... read more

We’re on the bus after a marathon of a walk to get to Granada train station (lots of construction going on so we had to walk miles out of the way and around to get to the train station). So be because of that we are busing it to Antequerra to hop on a AVE train to Cordoba. Let’s recap the last 3 days in Granada. Ah, Granada. The jewel in the crown that is Andalucía or Al-Andalus. We arrived to a really nice new hotel and immediately went to get our Granada card from the tourist office. The Alhambra, palace of the Moors, is notoriously known for selling out well in advance (only 6600 tickets a day) and as we knew from our last trip, the only way to avoid lining up at 6am to ... read more

We wander into a very attractive square with gardens surrounding a fountain. Issy says she wants to take a picture of the fountain, but it isn't working. As she says this it comes on. We wonder who's listening to our conversations. We decide that we need to be very careful about what we say from now on. The owner of the B&B told us when we arrived that we should visit the Monastery of San Jeronimo. We had read that this has a small church attached to it and that you have to pay to enter. The church's doors are closed, but a man waves for us to open one of them and go in. He doesn't ask us for any money. There's a mass in progress so we sit quietly in the back row. The ... read more

We get up early for our tour of the Alhambra. Spain really does seem to be in the wrong time zone. It‘s only barely light when we wake up at 7am, and it’s still been broad daylight at 10pm every night. We walk down to Plaza Nueva and look for building number 14, which is the meeting place for the tour. Not many of the buildings seem to have numbers on them, and we're not sure what numbering system is used for squares. I tell Issy that the usual system used in streets of having odd numbers on one side and even numbers on the other side might be a bit problematic for squares, because what would they do about the numbers on the other two sides. She gives me the look. We spot an equally ... read more

I'm down to my last clean shirt. It's a red Hawaiian shirt with flowers all over it, and it's also missing a few crucial buttons. Issy usually tells me that I'm only allowed to wear it at the beach, and then only if there are no other people around, but I get special permission to wear it today only because I have no other clean shirts to wear. We have breakfast and I settle in the bathroom for a long session of clothes washing, with the aid of some laundry detergent which we bought last night. The plug doesn't work properly so I need to use a plastic bag to try to keep water in the sink. This is only a marginal improvement, so I need to keep refilling the sink, and I'm now worried that ... read more

I think Issy's been reading the blog. The lights in the shower go on and off again for several minutes like strobe lights in a disco. I tell her that this is not funny, but I think she's enjoying herself way too much to stop. We pack. I sort my clothes into two piles according to whether they're dirty or clean, and see that my dirty clothes now outnumber my clean clothes by four to one. Issy sees what I'm doing. She says that swimming in clothes doesn't make them clean, so I redo my piles. The dirty clothes now outnumber the clean clothes by eight to one. We catch a taxi to the station, and board a train which takes us through seemingly endless fields of olive trees. We're supposed to change trains at somewhere ... read more

A long day in the coach. 6 hours driving broken into 3 x 2 hour stints. No really interesting sites to report, just the tour director talking most of the time pouring out Spanish history. His knowledge is amazing, quoting kings by number and dates, way too much and he stands and refers to nothing. We start off with orange groves everywhere, then almonds and finally some really arid country which he says is where a lot of the old "spaghetti westerns" were filmed. Just like a real desert scene with lots of hills everywhere. He tells us about a city that we pass that was built expressly to attract tourists. Looks and sounds very much like the Gold Coast. Lots of high rise buildings, even an amusement park. All in the middle of nowhere. He ... read more

This is our last stop in Spain...after Granada, it's driving up directly to Madrid in order to take our plane to the North. This is it, 1800km in a single week....temperatures around 35 degrees, not a single drop of rain...and obviously, when not one the road, a lot of cuddles! For our last stop, we give you Granada. I also came here as a teenager...and trust me, the Alhambra was my first wonder of the world to visit! This time, I've booked the night visit. They only sell 400 of those tickets per night...so it's a good idea to book way ahead. It doesn't even cost much more. The idea is to visit the palace between 10pm and midnight, and to come the next morning to visit the gardens of the Generalife and everything else there ... read more

Glyn woke with a scream this morning. I meant to wake him gently with a hug but accidentally pulled the covers off him instead. It's easy to get those two confused. Anyway, as a result, we got up at 7am as planned. It wasn't raining at this point, but there was a lot of evidence to prove it hadn't long stopped. Our first stop of the day was the caves at Nerja. These caves do have paintings that are thought be be 20,000 years old, but those parts probably will never be open to tourists. We were given handsets with monotone commentary on the caves, highlighting everything that is boring about them; I did want to know about the caves but didn't want to risk slipping into a coma as I walked around the dark cathedral ... read more

Granada is the home to the most visited attraction in Spain, the Alhambra. Basically it is a site that had several small military fortifications until the 12th century when it became a very ornate Moorish palace. 100 years or so after the palace was built, the Moorish lost their 7 century rule over the region. Then step in King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (think Columbus) and the christianification began. Fast forward to present time when they have about 7000 tour tickets available per day, 6800 of which are typically spoken for 3 months in advance. As of last night, we didn't have tickets. At the advice of several internet blogs, we woke up at 5:30 and got in line by 5:45 to try our hand at winning 2 of the few remaining tickets. All of that ... read more
