Well first of all…(one of :P) my best friends, dianna came to visit me 2 weeks ago! It was so nice and amazing! We went to Barcelona together and had a blast running around sagrada familia and just having a goodd time together. The weather was perfect in cadiz so we went to the beach almost everyday! I couldn’t have asked for anything better than seeing her! I was getting a little homesick and then here comes dianna but not only bringing herself, but bearing gifts from America! Pb m&ms girl scout cookies, America products: burts bees (very crucial) it was like Christmas in march! Loved it. I wish I could have all my friends and family here and then it would be perfect! Last weekend we went to Granada and Cordoba for the weekend with ... read more

First of all, sorry for being the worst blogger ever! I’ll split up this blog up by the weeks. So 2 weeks ago was Carnival here in Cadiz. It is where everyone dresses up in costumes like Halloween and parties for a whole week. We get school off and everything, you can drink in the streets and it is totally legal. A bunch of people from all over come to cadiz for carnival and it almost triples the population here. I was going to dress up as a pirate with the costume my sisters host mom had, but then last minute went through my host’s families collection of goodies and found a fairy costume. My host mom found some gold fabric and made me a quick little bag for my “fairy dust” (little pieces of paper ... read more

So I have been in spain for a little over a month.. have a lot of catching up to do. I started my trip in Granada where i stayed at Oasis (a hostel) for 10 days, it became my new home. The people there were so nice, i met a bunch of people from all over the world including a man from BELLINGHAM! what a small world. Granada is so beautiful with all their cobble stone streets and amazing viewpoints. I didn't get to go to Alhambra yet because i will be going again in April so i look forward to returning. They have the best tapas (appetizers) in Granada because if you buy a drink you get a FREE tapa it is something i miss :) also they have really good shwarmas (kind of like ... read more

Found Somewhere a bit Warmer We almost didn't get off on time but, thanks to our Giles and friend Mike, we managed to mend our broken electrical step. Much thanks to them for working so quickly, the day before we were due to leave. And then Michael managed to break the valve to one of the wheels whilst attempting to take a dust cap off. This meant a call to the AA and then a trip to the tyre shop to get a new valve fitted ("We don't fit metal valves!"). So on Tuesday we made it to Folkestone to see Lesley's brother's family which was really good including an afternoon with Emma in town and a walk along the front. Then onto Dover, Calais, our friends in Evreux for a coffee stop and to our ... read more

October 26 - Cadiz Decided not to take a tour here. Cold is hovering and I didn’t want to be stuck on a bus when I really wanted to be in bed. The Hop on -Hop off stops just outside the gate so I jump on and make the loop around the city. Once again I am entranced by the old architecture. There is nothing at home to compare to it. My first stop is Cathedral square. The church is charging for admittance so I pass and wander around, pick up batteries for the camera and some Euros. So far I have been very good about souvenirs and I only have two ports left. I decide to try the gazpacho at a little café on the square. It was more like seafood bisque, very smooth and ... read more

Day 5 - Cadiz is Europe’s oldest city, compact and surrounded by sea. Instead of taking a tour we decided to spend our day ashore exploring on foot. We thought we start by taking a short walk to the nearby cathedral before returning to the ship for morning tea. After taking a wrong turn we ended up walking for 3 hours a little more than we expected especially as Alex was in uncomfortable shoes. Along the way we did find some beautiful botanical gardens and a café to enjoy a coffee and churros, much better than any we had tasted in Australia. The café was interesting as the tables were in the botanical gardens on one side of the road, and the small café on the other side of the busy main road. The waitress was ... read more

Like I said: busking won’t make you rich money-wise. There are far better reasons to play in the streets though: all kinds of things cross your way. Not only Bulgarian accordeonists looking for rich unmarried women from the north of Europe to have coffees with (see my previous report, May 2010) Salvador for example, was a completely different story. He was walking arm in arm with his wife when he saw me playing at the boulevard with my guitarcase at my feet and my red hat as my officious trade mark. Together they choose a bench that looked out over the sea and they sat there listening quietly for about an hour. Only when I started to pack my things, they came over to buy a cd. Soon I knew a lot about their daughter, their ... read more

“You can always recognize British people easily,” Jonny says, “they walk like they’re not entirely normal.” I smile. He should know; he’s British and he’d be the first to admit that his own motorics fit his description. We’ve walked through the costums office on our way from Spanish La Linea de la Concepción to British Gibraltar and now we stand packed and ready with our guitars and equipment in the oppressive heat before a barrier. Waiting for airplanes. Yes: laying right across the one and only access road to the city are the runway and airstrip of Gibraltar airport. Practical. Maybe a "hidden" sign of the Dutch that conquered this little part of Spain together with the British then. Airplanes in 1700? Hmm. “No, then the Brazilians,” Jonny interrupts my thoughts, “they dance when they walk! ... read more

I only knew about half of the people there. Most students had returned to their home country in July already, and now four days before the start of the new academic year in October, I certainly was the last one standing. But most of my friends that hadn’t left were there, eventhough there weren’t enough of them to fill the café quite well. We played the songs that they already heard, we drank on my quick return and they even managed to buy a present for me. Two actually. The first one was a little book with staves and blanco pages for remarks or lyrics besides the music. “I already bought this,” Sandy said, “when I found out that you can’t read notes!” I assured her that it didn’t matter. And there was another little notebook ... read more

Dzzjjj-zzjjj-zzjjjj-zjjjunggggg… Oh no. Not “dzzjjung”, is it? Not now. I silence the “it’s-your-own–fault-told-you-so” moaning voice in my head while I try all possible combinations of choke, gear and gas until I can’t remember anymore which ones I tried. Now I flooded the engine for sure. In the meantime I’m talking to my dear friend who I have left standing there workless with it’s front wheel against the curb for a few weeks now, and I beg him to please keep grumbling this time when the starter keeps quiet. I promise that this week we’ll drive a few hours every day. Yes: I’ve planned to leave Cádiz tomorrow to go back to Holland for a little while. By bike. Or, well… Dzzjj-zzjjjungg. With my parents and my brother Koen, who had driven three thousand kilometers to come ... read more
