Hi all! First off, Heather: I GOT YOUR PACKAGE AND I LOVE IT!!! Trail mix and peanut butter…the Heather Gods heard my prayer! Hahahaha!! The first thing I did was take out one of the spoons I bought and had a big scoop of peanut butter. Oh the sweet, sweet creamy, crunchiness. It was heaven in a very giant plastic jar. However if anyone else sent the same stuff do not worry…I will welcome it with open arms!! Mom, the second package still has not arrived, but hopefully tomorrow or Friday. Also, I heard today on the news that Beyoncé is pregnant. This is exciting for two reasons: 1) I love Beyoncé 2) I understood it, on my own, on the news. Today we did not have class, because we don’t have class on Wednesdays during ... read more

I’m not 100% sure how to start this blog. Today was a day that changed from being very withdrawn and thinking of home, to for the first time feeling like I perhaps belong in Càdiz. Maybe let’s start with the boring part: Our trip to El Museo de Càdiz (The Càdiz Museum). Not boring because Càdiz is boring, nor is its history, it’s just that, well…the only way I can describe our tour guide is, of course, with a movie line. “Buller…Buller…” Yes. Monotone. We were there for an hour and a half and got through 3 rooms. I tried so hard to keep my focus on the cute little Gaditano historian, but alas, somethings just aren’t in the cards. Problem easily fixed when our resident director, Juan, invited us out for ice cream after. Good ... read more

There are a lot of times where I find myself in what I consider to be a sticky situation in Cadiz. For example, yesterday was September 11, and the U.S. Embassy in Madrid advised us all to stay inside, and not draw any attention to ourselves as Americans. However, yesterday was the annual Airplane Extravaganza in the new part of Cadiz and the whole town was there. The other Americans and I decided to go to the air show and I wore white and blue to show my allegiance to the U.S. and honor those who were affected by September 11th. We spoke English, we didn’t try to blend in, and we craved American food. We simply wanted to be American yesterday. It was a liberating feeling to say the least. I was curious to ... read more

Hello! Before I begin, another announcement about sending me PACKAGES. If you are sending a package, be sure you say that it is USED clothing or something of that nature. If you don’t declare it as used, or personal items on the customs for I have to PAY taxes to receive it because they will assume that it is new and therefore it is importation, and the taxes are EXPENSIVE, like 40 euros or so just to receive it! On that note, Mom, your package arrived at the post office today and I can go pick it up tomorrow! Yesterday was a very full, very long, but fun day. Càdiz had its third annual airshow at La Playa de La Victoria, which runs alongside New Càdiz The show didn’t start till 12, but we all met ... read more

Hi! I’m really sorry. I hate giving you guys two blogs in one day, but it’s just want happens sometimes. I bought this mobile Wi-Fi thing and it worked great for the first two days, and then it just stopped working! What?! Called the help line, woman spoke so fast! “Más despacio por favor.” (Slower please). As I said in an earlier blog, if a Spaniard realizes you are slower at Spanish they don’t slow down or pick different words, they just talk louder. “No, más despacio por favor.” Two beeps. Someone on the other end speaks, “Hello.” She transferred me to their English speaking folks (uhg) where I was told I need to “top up” my device, meaning I need to go online and put money on the account since it is pay as you ... read more

Today was hot, hot, hot! So after a couple of hours of mummy and daddy pushing me around Cadiz, looking at the churches and cathedral, we went to the beach. I got to play in the sand and daddy brought me a new ball to play with. After having a picnic daddy took me into the sea but I didn't want to go in, so I screamed! We liked Cadiz, it seems very chilled out and a proper Spanish town still. It didn't seem too tourist even though the cruise comes here. Mummy and daddy think Spain would be ok to live in, if we never manage to get a visa for oz. Back on the ship I went in my paddling pool again. I loved it today. I stayed in for over an hour and ... read more

September 8th, 2011 Just to clear up something from my last post for people who didn’t get the joke (cough cough Blake Morton) my roommate and I don’t really make up crazy cockroach dances, that was just my way of telling everyone that we have had a few cockroach encounters since we have been here. Today school seemed to drag on. I really like our teacher, Roberto, because he is great at explaining tough concepts. Today, Hayley and I sat with international students from Germany and Italy between us so we could get to know people from other countries. They came to the beach with us after class, and it is really great talking to them because we don’t have the option of defaulting to English during the conversation. They speak Spanish on the same level ... read more

Hi! Yesterday after I left the internet cafe I went home and did my first homework assignment (yuck!) However, I actually don't mind school :) Today in our first class with Jose, we talked about Spanish cinema. Want to learn a bit of Spanish? Cursi a close equivalent of "cheesy." Both of our professors are pretty funny. Today Jose was telling us how we all talk too quietly. In Spain they are loud! Haha! He was saying how if a tourist is asking a Spaniard how to get somewhere and is clearly not well versed in Spanish, instead of picking different simple words, they just say the same thing over and over again only louder each time. I honestly haven't noticed if that's true yet...I'll have to start paying attention. He said that Germans though are ... read more

Hi! First order of business. DO NOT SEND ANYMORE PACKAGES TO THE UNIVERSITY! SEND THEM TO THE ADDRESS I GAVE FOR LETTERS!!! Sorry about that. If you have already sent something to the school its ok, but Juan said to just go ahead and send packages to our houses. I'll re-post the address here: Pepa Barroso (Para: Devin Schultze) C/ Sacramento no 49, 2o IZQ. 11003 Cádiz España (And just so you know, C/ is like writing St. for street :) ) Alright. Last night I was feeling just so-so and a bit out of place in the house after I got scolded for trying to do work in the living room. So before bed I tried to relax and watch a movie I had downloaded a while ago. It was called "Everything Must Go" with ... read more
