Out for Tapas
I was the only American there! Hi all!
First off, Heather: I GOT YOUR PACKAGE AND I LOVE IT!!! Trail mix and peanut butter…the Heather Gods heard my prayer! Hahahaha!! The first thing I did was take out one of the spoons I bought and had a big scoop of peanut butter. Oh the sweet, sweet creamy, crunchiness. It was heaven in a very giant plastic jar. However if anyone else sent the same stuff do not worry…I will welcome it with open arms!!
Mom, the second package still has not arrived, but hopefully tomorrow or Friday.
Also, I heard today on the news that Beyoncé is pregnant. This is exciting for two reasons: 1) I love Beyoncé 2) I understood it, on my own, on the news.
Today we did not have class, because we don’t have class on Wednesdays during our 3 week course. This is very, very nice, not just because we don’t have to go to class, but because I can go for my run at 8 instead of 7. This means that there is actually a little bit of sunlight so I don’t constantly fear for my life as I carefully tip-toe down the treacherous stairwell of our apartment building. I
very much enjoy being able to run on the beach in the daylight. I can also seem to run farther when I am on the beach. Back home there were days that my runs seemed to carry on FOREVER and the Mopac is a very beautiful place to run! I find that the time actually flies by and before I know it 30 minutes have come and gone and I can turn around and head back towards the house.
To do a bit of a continuation of my blog from yesterday, today I thought a lot about what I wrote yesterday. I thought a lot about Kyle and my family, and at my turn around point I had to stop for just a few minutes to collect myself because without even really realizing it I had started crying. I realized that this family gathering on October 1st will be the first major family event that I will have missed, minus the time I couldn’t go to Christmas because I was an incubus of viral plague. I didn’t realize how much that thought would affect me until, well, until I thought of it.
I decided that I don’t want
to run alone on October 1st. I have asked Hayley, who I mentioned yesterday, if she had any plans for the first. She said no, she really didn’t so I asked if she would like to go for a long run with me on the beach that day. Even though I have been going for hour longs runs, I haven’t been going on them with other people. “How long is long?”
“I’m thinking about an hour.”
“Hmm…I’ll have to work up to it, but yeah I’ll go!”
So, we are going to run together. Thankfully it is a Saturday morning so we will have plenty of time to lollygag on the beach afterwards. I’m glad I will have Hayley there with me. We even talked about trying to do it barefoot…very freeing, but very difficult, we’ll just have to see. We were in the middle of a department store when I asked, so I didn’t really explain the whole story of why I need to go for a long run on October 1st specifically, but I will get around to that. Which brings me to a question: Mom, since Hayley is going to run with me, is there any way
Menoc Donald
The burger place Jerica and I found, then lost. It's like it only appears when you need it, like a Room of Requirement...only for hamburgers!! we could get her a shirt and a red bandana?? I may be able to find a bandana here, but I haven’t actually seen any yet. They don’t need to get here by the first, but maybe it would be something nice we could do for her to say thank you.
We went to El Corte Ingles which is like a Dillard’s, or actually, more like a Macy’s probably. It’s a lot bigger than Dillard’s, and they have just about everything. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s nice to know there is a “we’ve got everything under the sun” store around.
We also bought our tickets for Gibraltar! (Not at the department store) We are so excited to go see it. From the top of the Rock of Gibraltar we will get to see the coast of Africa as well as the famous monkeys of Gibraltar that are notorious for messing around with people’s backpacks. We are all very excited.
I also made plans to go and visit Chiara, my Italian foreign exchange sister, the first week in December. I only have one day of school that week so I am going to take some time and travel to Italy! I am so excited to see her and spend some real time in Italy!! Ryanair truly is amazing, 75 euros round trip.
We also got invited to go do Bachata dancing tonight by the other European kids. I wasn’t really 100% sure if I wanted to go. I mentioned it today at lunch and Pepa and Selu both said, “Oh it is really a beautiful dance!”
“Oh! Should I go?”
“Yes! Yes you should! Even if you don’t do the dancing it is wonderful to see!!”
Decision made. Devin is going. Natalie…eh doesn’t really want to. Wrong decision. Pepa told Natalie that she needed to go out and try more things. She shouldn’t just sit around the house with them. She mentioned how excited I was when I got home last night about speaking Spanish all evening with the other European kids. I felt bad for Natalie, but I was glad that Pepa wasn’t hurt that I had missed out on Flan making and hanging out with the family. She and Selu really want us to go experience what the city has to offer. She is also very accommodating that if we don’t want to spend money on food she we can make a sandwich or something and take it with us. So, Natalie changed her mind. She is going to come tonight as well, maybe a bit reluctantly, but Pepa and Selu want her to go out and try things and if she doesn’t like them she never has to do it again.
In an hour we are going to go try some 1 euro tapas, which our family though was really, really strange, but we’re Americans, we don’t know what time to go eat tapas. Apparently not at 5pm. Well, we will just break the mold this time, and then get it right next time. Everything is a learning experience here!
Love always,
Devin 😊
