Hi Everyone! Sorry this is going to be a short, informational blog. :) If you are planning on sending any packages please send them before November 15th or 16th, because I will be leaving for Christmas vacation on December 21st so if something were to happen and it was slow on delivery I may not get it before I leave. I also may not be living with my host family next semester, so if it gets here after I leave, I may never get it. In January I will send out my new address. Letters are sort of the same story, but they get here a little faster, so you can send letters up until Thanksgiving. Thanks to everyone who has sent letters and packages I really, really love them! It makes me feel so much ... read more

Here are a few updates: I played soccer with the API group, our director Juan and a Spaniard from a town nearby, Carlos. I am proud to say that I scored twice! We played for an hour on a soccer field around the corner from my house. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be and everyone seemed to have a fun time. I couldn’t move the next morning and I had bruises all over my shins… I hope we play again next week! I had my first (and last) experience at the movie theatre in Spain. The movie was called El piel que habito. It was directed by Pedro Almodóvar, an award winning Spaniard who is notorious for his complex and risqué plots. I have seen another one of his movies ... read more

Happy November All! It’s pretty exciting that it’s November already. Actually, I can’t believe it’s November already. Just two months ago I was thinking that Christmas seemed so far away, and here we are and it is just around the corner. Many of you are probably thinking, “Whoa now, Devin. We haven’t even gotten through Turkey Day yet.” Well, ha! We already had Thanksgiving before I left for Spain, so Christmas IS just around the corner for me! :) It was nice being back in Cádiz, Natalie and I spent all day Sunday together walking around the parts of town we hadn’t really seen yet, including walking out to the lighthouse, which we learned is gated off, so we sat outside the gate and talked for a while and also set my flower free that I ... read more

You never realize just how far your daughter is until you travel 10 hours on a plane and 5 hours on a train to see her. Yes, this blog is from Carol or “Mommasita!” Michael and I just got back from spending 10 wonderful days with Jerica! As a mom, there is nothing more comforting to know than that your daughter is being well taken care of, especially thousands of miles away. The program that Jerica went through for the study abroad program has been very impressive. They have placed her with a wonderful family who we had the privilege to meet and spend time with . Jerica met us at the train station at Cadiz on that first day and we began the first walk of very many through the city. The city was beautiful ... read more

Hello All, Well, Today I am leaving Cádiz for a northern province here in Spain called Galicia. I came up with this wacky plan to do part of El Camino de Santiago. If you’ve ever taken a Spanish culture class you may know what that is, we talked about it a lot in high school I feel like, if you haven’t, well, here’s a little background info. El Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage to the Cathedral in the city Santiago de Compostela where it is thought that the apostle Saint James the Great was laid to rest. It is said that his remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem through northern Spain to Santiago. During the middle ages it was very popular to make the pilgrimage, then because of all of the ruckus with the ... read more

Good morning, :) Whelp, it is finally raining. For the first time since our first day in Cádiz we have actually seen clouds, and on top of that, these clouds have brought rain! Maybe now we will get some green going on in these parts. The only bad part is that I really can’t leave the house with my computer. I usually put my raincoat over my backpack instead of over my body when I have my computer because my computer is quite honestly more valuable than whatever I am wearing that day. However, it doesn’t just mist, spritz or rain here, it pours. This morning I was very sad when I got up for my run and looked up at the skylight and saw/heard the pouring rain. Pepa and Selu were just getting up as ... read more

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011 When we got back to Cádiz on the 23rd we went to La Hotel Victoria so Mom and Dad could check in and put their backpacks down. Naturally, everything except for a few restaurants was closed down because it was Sunday, but we walked around so I could show them New Cádiz. We ran into what I would consider the Spanish equivalent of tailgating. There was a Cádiz soccer game tonight so everyone was dressed in yellow and blue jerseys. We headed back towards their hotel so we could walk along the shore while the sun was setting. It was cloudy so it wasn’t the ideal day to watch the sunset, but it was still pretty. We couldn’t settle on a place to eat in new Cádiz so I suggested that we ... read more

I had class today from 9:30-1:00. I ate lunch with my host family and then walked to the beach to meet my parents for a relaxing afternoon. They seem to be enjoying Cádiz so far (except for the sparse bathroom situation). The tide was extremely low and the water was a little cold, so for the most part we just laid in the sand and talked about our plans for the day. At 6:30, Mom and Dad came to my house and put their luggage in my room so they wouldn’t have to drag it all the way to Italy. They finally got to meet my roommate Hayley and they like her a lot, which is not surprising because she is an amazing friend and roommate! I had no idea how meeting my host family was ... read more

Monday was entertaining, because we had a discussion in class about the evolution of gender equality over time. I learned that men and women both get maternity leave in a lot of countries. In most of the countries the maternity leave is significantly shorter for the men, however in one country, both the mother and the father get 4 months! That seems a bit extreme to me… but to each his own! Our professor also took a poll on how many of us had grandmothers who went to college. I was shocked to see that only one student besides myself had a grandmother with a college degree. A girl in the back of the room said “well it is different for her because she lives in America”, which made me realize how many more opportunities ... read more

Hi everyone! Today has been…ugh, frustrating. My Mom sent me two packages at the end of August, literally right after I got here. One arrived in a very timely fashion…the other is beyond fashionably late. Finally I worked on tracking it down yesterday and with the help of my Mom we discovered that it has just been sitting in the Spanish Customs office for one MONTH. It has just been sitting there! I looked on the website and when a package gets detained like that they are supposed to send you a document so that you can declare that what is in the package is yours and then they will send it to you. Guess who just decided not to send me my document? Apparently Spain decided to not send me my document, so I spent ... read more
