This weekend was a blast. On Thursday, we took Ashley to a show at la Carboneria to see Flamenco. Friday, we chilled, went running, went shopping for boots, and went to an international fair. Then... on Saturday, we went on the bike trip that I planned. It was in a tiny town called Puerto Serrano. We took a bus about an hour and a half South of Sevilla. There, we rented bikes to go on these nationally preserved trails that were originally supposed to be railroad lines. They ran out of money or something, so they never put tracks down. Instead, it is just a big trail fit for a train. The tunnels are like the ones trains go through... Anyway, the trails were beautiful. There was a river, farms, beautiful hills, and we watched the ... read more

So this weekend was a "puente" (long weekend). Antonette and I decided to go to the coast to learn how to surf. Yes! We left early Friday morning for the bus station. Then we took the bus to Conil de la frontera, which is a small coastal town in the province of Cadiz. We had Hostel reservations at a 13 euro per night British place. Before we could go to our room, we had to get to the beach to go to our first lesson. We had NO IDEA where to go to meet him, so we just picked a direction on the beach and hoped for the best. Finally, 30 minutes late, sweaty, and having peed my pants twice from laughing so hard, we made it to our instructor. And our bathing suits, you ask? ... read more

Welcome to Sotogrande, Spain! An invitation from Jason and Marisa to go and see them in Sotogrande, Spain, was a difficult offer to refuse: you know you are going to have an awesome time; you are going to dine well; you know you will party and have a blast; and finally, you will have the opportunity to take in the sun on the Spanish beaches (which is much better than being trapped in the bleak weather of London!). It was also our last chance to catch up with them before Marisa had the baby (due in mid-late November). 4th October 2008 So it was another early start to catch the 9am Easyjet flight from Gatwick to Gibraltar. After the 2.5 hour flight we were landing in the British colony of Gibraltar. The airstrip here is small, ... read more

Happy Anniversary! We've been married for one week! Ahhh! To be married and in Spain. There's nothing like it. We attempted to see the sleepy town of Vejer. But unlike Canada everything is closed on Sundays. We had woken up to dark skies and had hoped that they would clear. Unfortunately it didn't and during our walk around down it decided to pour rain. We went back to our room and slept for a couple of hours. After our nap we decided to try and get some lunch somewhere. However, everyone in town had the same idea so sitting on dry patios were at a premium. We found a delightful place that served a variety of dishes, such as Crepes and Curry Dishes! We found a table under the umbrella, but the umbrella had a hole ... read more

Entry 4 I'm here, I'm here. We left Madrid this morning after visiting the Palacio Real. The flight was about an hour long to Jerez de la Frontera, a city about 30 mins from Cadiz. We bussed over to Cadiz and met our host families. On the bus, we were given an itinerary/calendar, contacts, and a sort of rule book which includes a list of things we can't do, like get it on in our host family's house. My host mom, Carmen, is a single older woman with three children that have moved out of the house. So it's just her, me, Chiqui (her little perrita), Gatito, and a canary whose name escapes me. The house is really cute, and I have a double bed which is a nice change from the twin beds in the ... read more

Our visit to Cadiz was a pleasant surprise. It turned out to be a most charming & captivating port of call. We did not book a tour. We could have gone to Seville and the Andalusian area. But instead we bought tickets for a hop-on/hop-off bus and had a great tour of the city. We got on close to the ship and rode to the other side of the city where got off to stroll down the street. We found a great little restaurant for beer and tapas. These were better than what we had in Barcelona. After a fine repast, we walked along the shore a while more. Some got back on the bus while Deanie, Pam, Linda G and I walked along the beach and saw some charming sights. We ended up walking all ... read more

Was surprised to learn that Cadiz, Spain is the oldest continuously occupied city in Western Europe. The Phoenician merchants set up shop here in 1100 B.C. We had a five hour excursion planned that did a little tour of the city and then headed out to Jerez de la Frontera to see the famous Spanish Andalucian horses and drink a little sherry. A lot of Spanish towns in this part of the World have the suffix de la Frontera. When the Spanish Kings were trying to reclaim Southern Spain from the Moors, every time they pushed them out of a city, they added the suffix to indicate this was the new frontier. Jerez is a beautiful area, clean and very picturesque and famous for it's bulls, horses and Sherry. The horse ranch was in a park ... read more

May 1, 2008 Today was Día de Los Trabajadores, Labor Day in Spain. So naturally, no one works and no one has school. We decided to relax at the beach in Cadiz for the day. Katie, Mary Ellen, Julie, and I took the bus there. Then we found our way to a nice beach that wasn’t too crowded (probably because it was only 11:15) and layed out to tan. We took a break from the sun to attempt to jump the waves. The water wasn’t as cold as the water in Portugal, but it took Katie, Mary Ellen, and I a little bit to get adjusted before we could stand there without any problems. After laying out for 5 ½ hours, we decided to get lemon slushy drinks and start walking back for our bus home. ... read more
