Man, one thing that is different about Slovenia that really catches me off guard is that service here does NOT come with a smile. Cashiers, waitresses, even customer service reps... they arn't forced into the humiliation of pretending to like their jobs as in Canada and the U.S. For me it's hard because I am so used to the friendly, chatty, smiley, "Oh Hiii... how ARE you today?" said with a whole lotta sugar on top... so when all I hear from them is a price I feel like they are mad at me or something... but that's not it at all! They are just... doing their job, without any Splenda on top! Anyway, today was fairly uneventful due to my lack of energy after the hike yesterday, but it did have some little beautiful moments! ... read more

What can I say but I love Slovenia. I have had the most wonderful 24 hours, first with the party last night and then an amazing, culture-experiencing, death-defying, leg-burning hike today. Last night, after spending the day touring (see Beautiful Day entry) the city and doing a few errands, Simona took me out to a going away party for a student leaving for France for a year. The party was out at this little cabin/barn thing, and apparently the guy who was leaving invited everybody from his cell phone… even people he couldn’t remember who they were! Needless to say, there were a ton of people there, all getting pretty drunk and all waiting on this enormous stewing pot of traditional Slovenian Goulash. We drank good wine (they make excellent wines here mom!), and danced… even ... read more

So today just got better and better... I spent the afternoon by myself wandering around the city. I started out in the main park again, and found out it is actually more like 25x the size of city park in Kelowna. That, and it includes a huge, lushly forested mountain that compares to Knox in size and has great walking trails all over it! So I hiked around for about half an hour, of course in my skirt and crappy shoes... but it was too nice to not go! Every hundred metres along the trail, there are signs that have different stretches on them for you to do... Of course I had to stop and do them! And when you get to the top, there is kind of like a gym made of mostly wood set ... read more

I've spent the last 2 days touring around the city with my wonderful tourguide Simona. Yesterday we were a little tired after partying all night, but we managed to get out and see Preserno Trg (the main square) and a little bit of the city. Today we saw more, including parts of the old city and this huge park that is kind of in the middle of the city that is very beautiful! Its been really nice having a tour guide, especially one that knows the city so well and has the same sort of interests as I do. While many Slovenians do speak English, most of the time it is fairly broken, so I have been SO greatful to have a translator as well, especially for sorting out things like my apartment and cell phone... ... read more

I will tell you one thing... Slovenian's really know how to party! Last night I partied with Simona and all her friends from school until 6am!!! I am SO tired right now! Anyway, we had a blast at the popular club called "Global". Apparently Wednesday night is like "college night" here, so it was SUPER busy! Anyway, we drank a bit and danced a lot and just had a really good time! It's nice to go to a bar and not feel like a piece of meat! I havn't seen to much of the old city yet, but today hopefully I will be headed there. What I have seen is very beautiful. We actually walked through part of it at 6:30 on the way home from the bar! It felt very strange to be walking home ... read more

Hello all! I've arrived safe and sound!! It is so beautiful here... very lush and green and lots of mountains. I have yet to go exploring beyond the little home I am staying in due to harsh harsh jet lag, but tomorrow offers load of possibilities! Please pray a prayer of thanks for Simona and Mr. and Mrs. Pirih (her parents)... they are graciously taking care of me at this time and I am SO thankful for everything they have done for me! All my love, will post pictures soon! Mel.... read more

Today we caught the bus up to Bled, a tourist oriented village on the shores of a pretty little lake of the same name. The landscape is absolutely stunning: lush green forests all around, a lake of clear blue water, a castle-topped cliff rising dramatically above the town and a church on an island in the midst of it all. We spent a couple of hours wandering round the lake, chatting with ducks and soaking in the sub-alpine splendour. We'd picked up a few ingredients back in town and so had ourselves a picnic on the lake edge, watching the locals and their puppies strutting their way along in the sunshine. After lunch we made the steep climb up through the trees to the castle. It was unfortunately a little on the pricey side, but the ... read more

Geo: 46.0514, 14.506Tired - insufficient sleep last night! Off to the train station - had a bologna sandwich on the tram ride over. Nothing special, but cheap by Vienna standards. Had an amazing pastry - like a cinnamon roll with walnuts, lightly iced. Outer ring was extremely flaky but the inner ring was a moist, chewy bread .... celestial ... heavenly ... like the spiral galaxy that is the Milky Way .... dotted with stars that were walnuts ... gute!Slept on the train to Ljubljana ... a beautiful train compartment with a TV and a big sofa bed that I stretched out on. Then I woke up - all a dream! You know you're tired when you dream about sleeping. Ate the nasty licorice that I bought in Bratislava - horrible. Slovenia is beautiful - meandering ... read more

So it turns out that Ljubljana is perhaps even prettier than Zagreb. It doesnt quite have the same charm, due to the over abundance of tourists in a smaller area, but it is nevertheless still pretty charming. The castle is a wee hike up the hill but the views are neat. Lucky for us the fog had cleared and we could see the mountains all around as well as all the red rooves of the town below. Corb spat off the side, tsk tsk. The buildings around town are beautiful and there are churches of all different colours and shapes. Even the bridges are exciting, with Dragon Bridge obviously being the best; everyone knows that Dragons Rule! On the weekend there were all sorts of music and live drama type things going on in the central ... read more

On my first day in Slovenia I only saw the Ljub train station, my hostel, and the bars next to my hostel. I started out early the next day to see the city. Ljub has been described as a mini-Prague, like that city was before it was discovered by hordes of tourists. Based on that I had an image in my mind of what the city would be like. And it wasnt like I imagined. It doesnt remind me of Prague at all, and that disappointed me. Still, Ljub is a nice, very small city. Its center is gorgeous, with beautiful old crumbly buildings (a favorite of mine!), some spires, a couple of neat old churches, and a big castle on a hill. (OK...sounding like Prague...but it still doesnt look like Prague at all, and is ... read more
