We went to Bled on 17th May. The main attraction in Bled is the picturesque Lake Bled, the Bled Castle overseeing the lake, and the Bled island in the middle of the lake. The Bled Castle has been around for 1000 years, believe or not, recently they just celebrated their 1000th anniversary. Bled is about 1 hour and 20 min away by bus from Ljubljana. Upon arrival, we saw the fijakers by the lakeside (a fijaker is a boat man who will take you across the lake to the small island) and asked the price. It is 10 Euro per person, so we sat down on his boat and waited for him to start, but he said wait for 5 min. After 20 min has gone by, we asked him again when he will start, he ... read more

We arrived in Ljubljana (pronounced as Lu-bi-ya-na), capital city of Slovenia at around 15 May midnight. As we were walking from the train station to the hostel, the manager of another hostel who happened to be there to pick up his guests, saw us and gave us a free ride to Fluxus Hostel. By the way, we have booked 5 nights stay in Fluxus, the website is http://www.fluxus-hostel.com/, check it out. We will be staying in this lovely, abeit romantic private room for 4 nights and in the dorm for 1 night. The room is lovely, its small though, but decorated with an IKEA touch. It has a attached bathroom that has shower facility but no toilet. Next time (if we are coming to Ljubljana again), we should stay in the dorm instead, cos the dorm ... read more

This restaurant is awesome! I had been eating at the touristy restaurants near the river for lack of a better option. The Sokol (Hawk) is a restaurant that serves "Slovenian National Food". I checked it out last night while walking around first thinking it was more like a bar, an empty bar. I looked inside and found that the place had an upstairs that was packed with people, and all these people were eating hearty dishes full of meat and cabbage and dumplings. Yes! So its still a little touristy in that there seem to be lots of foreigners there, but most are accompanied by their slovenian friends, who have brought them to this restaurant to indulge in the food and beer. Sokol makes their own beer served in resealable bottles. Delicious, and it went so ... read more

Hello All! So, the train from Paris carried me through Germany (great people, man! super friendly!) and Austria (dont know - I was sleeping) and then down out of the Julian Alps (where Santa Claus vacations with the munchkins of Oz. Im sure of it) and into Slovenia. I wobbled, very well rested but still a touch discombobulated, out of the train and into the legoland world of Ljubljana. I guess "legoland" isnt quite the right word. Its more like the town was made out of Fabuland. Any of you all remember that stuff? Its cuter, less spaceshipppy, more provincial. Anyway. The funny thing about Ljubljana is that it felt really out of scale. Its tucked between the not-mighty-at-all Ljubljana river and steep hills on all sides. It takes up an improbably small plot of earth, ... read more

We were originally scheduled to have three concerts in Slovenia but two of them were cancelled. So we only had once concert in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. The first thing I noticed about Slovenia were the beautiful green mountains. It is so nice to see some much green again after all the white we experienced in the first half of the tour. We spent a little time in the center of the city which is very cute. There is a small river running through the city with many cafes lining along the river. I stayed by myself with an American pastor and his family. He has lived in Slovenia for 13 years and is fluent in Slovenian. His family was incredibly nice and hospitable. It was such a blessing to sleep in a room by ... read more

Bled... sounds vaguely forbidding and things looked a little dark at first. Took a very early train to the nearest station, which is only 4km away from the lake, and my guidbook just said to "take one of the frequent buses" for the last leg. This was a cheap but unfortunately impossible plan, as there were no commuter buses, least not on a Sunday in April. After looking around for said buses we decided to just split a cab with two Aussies who also wanted to get to the lake. We arrived... it was a little grey and a little cold, not too many people were out and about (they were all in church I guess) and we were lacking strength/motivation, so settled down for some coffee. The people next to us ordered cake and that ... read more

Starving, we pounced on the first friendly-looking restaurant. Meal du jour? Fillet of Foal! Yummmmmy. I have never seen a horse dish, but Lindsay told me this is apparently a delicacy in Switzerland as well. This spurred way to many "so hungry i could eat a horse" comments and jokes that all the big dogs we saw were really just small horses, hiding from the cooks. Instead of fillet of foal or a nice horse burger, we settled for big salads and delicious coffees in a sunny square by the river. Another time we got - don't laugh, because it was good! - mexican food. Ljubljana is ablsolutely glorious. Spring arrived in earnest, and the whole population seemed to be out enjoying their city. The river was lined with willows, packed cafe tables and bars, and ... read more
