Geez, I guess I have let the time slip away because it has been a long time since the last blog update, but life has been cruising along quite smoothly. In a sense that means that I haven’t had too many exciting things going on OR I have become somewhat acclimated to my new home. I think the latter is most true because I’m getting ready to fill you in on some of the events of the past month or so. First of all, as of yesterday, I am now entirely finished with the three courses required for me to fully graduate. All I have to do now is send my transcript back to OU in order to have my credit applied and my diploma issued. It’s a bittersweet feeling after having already gone through graduation ... read more

A word about my friends here in Slovenia I think is in order. I think that I have scarcely mentioned them since my arrival, but they have been an integral part of my cultural exposure and adaptation since I arrived here in Ljubljana. It really is amazing when I sit back and think about it now. This is because the international community here in Ljubljana numbers around 180 foreign students, which is not an incredible number; however, it is very well organized and tight knit. There are activities for us nearly every day of the week. A normal week might go like this: Monday, meeting at Parlament (a pub) at 21.00 where the schedule for the week is distributed and we have the opportunity to socialize with the other international students; Tuesday, some activity like a ... read more

It has finally arrived: the sun is shining, the birds chirping, the people are out in force in the outdoor cafes, and the world becoming painted in beautiful hues that give added color to everyone’s life. That means that it’s time to be outside; to enjoy the rustic and beautiful city of Ljubljana. Today, the sun was shining and the temperature was hovering around 18 degrees centigrade (64º F). The course that I was supposed to have today was cancelled because the professor was vacationing in Montenegro. So, I decided that it would be a good afternoon to get outside and go for a jog in Tivoli park which is right by my flat. Connected to this park is a 32.8 km (~20 mi.) tree-lined path called The Path of Remembrance & Comradeship. This path commemorates ... read more

One of the more interesting challenges that a person has to deal with when they arrive in a foreign country is logistics—the movement of yourself from one place to another. There a few factors that make this difficult: one, you usually know nothing about the city in which you have just arrived; two, the maps that you get at tourist offices are almost ALWAYS ridiculously inaccurate, hard to read, and maybe a little better than the map that you might have from the travel guidebook that you purchased before leaving; three, language makes any type of communication and understanding exponentially more difficult. Then if you’re attempting to use the public transportation; forget about it! You’re in for an adventure every time you step out the door. The product of this logistics nightmare usually means that your ... read more

My plane touched down on approximately 11:00 a.m. on the 6th of February in Ljubljana, Slovenia after a connection in Frankfurt, Germany. The flight itself was rather uneventful. I was surprised to find that on the relatively short flight from Frankfurt (1 ½ hrs) that I was actually served lunch. I guess the nationalized Slovenian airline is not under as much of cash crunch as the destitute airlines of American these days. This is also a good illustration of the socialist spirit that I have encountered during my stay here. I hope to address this issue at greater length in the very near future. Upon arrival at the airport, I soon came to discover that my person was the only part of me that made the connection to Ljubljana—my luggage being left in Frankfurt for the ... read more

First, The Traveler’s Manifesto for the next year and a half. Let’s lay out the initial plan and see what happens to the plan as it morphs and the world turns as I travel across its great expanse. For a quick summary, I’m currently in Ljubljana, Slovenia studying for the next 5 months. Thenceforth, I am planning on traveling to various countries in Eastern Europe namely Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, the Ukraine, and Estonia before moving into Asia. The first stop in Asia will be Russia likely followed by India, and then Nepal if the border has been reopened. From there I’d like to tour a little bit in Tibet followed by S. China, Mayanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, parts of Indonesia and the Philippines. Then I’ll move onto the land ... read more

Well, this was a girly escape from the duldrums that is work... We had a right laugh staying in the youth hostel Celica which I believe used to be an old prison. The town itelf was pretty with the castle right up above, the locals were alright and the food not great... We did discover a great vegetarian restaurant though which was cheap but delicious and did the job. The nightlife was not great but it certainly was interesting; shopping was not great although we ended up in some designers studio looking at his latest collection before it being shipped off to Tokyo... Our day trip to Lake Bled was fab, it was truly beautiful, very magical place, hope you enjy the pictures:... read more

The bus is the best way to get to Bled apparently unless you have plenty of time then go by train. Not sure how that works but we got on the bus. I think costing 1000 SIT as everything seems to. It took between 1 and 2 hours to get there and when we arrived we headed straight to our apartment to dump our bags. We had an apartment for five as we like space, or some mates failed to come. This time we couldn’t allow others to share, as it wasn’t a hostel. The girl on reception at the sister hotel was hot, a definite 11/11 (new scale). We was going to stay in Bled for 5 days and that would be the end of our pre-booked accommodation, after that we need to book fast ... read more

We took a train to the closest town to the castle where we could then get a taxi for the remaining few miles for 5000 SIT. It was raining for the first time, it wasn’t that fine rain that soaks you through but the heavy rain that soaks you more, and with having excellent weather for the previous two days and the report saying it was going to improve, I wore shorts and short sleeve shirt. I stood out nicely especially when I wore my England hat. While waiting for the taxi driver have an ice cream. The taxis driver waits while you visit this fascinating castle built into the side of a cliff. If you are wondering which castle we are talking about here it is not Ljubljana castle but Predjamkega Grad. Entry fee 1000 ... read more

As we let others stay in the room we waited until they were up and gone before getting up, still made it up for breakfast tho (see photo as evidence). The first night it was a Turk from Manchester and a Brit from London. The Turk did his naked exercises in the morning with lots of moans and grunts (no photo of this you just have to believe me, it wasn't pretty). Today we visited a castle. Ljubljana castle is situated on one side of the river up a hill (nice spot for a castle, may come across other good situations throughout our travels). Cost 1000 SIT for a walk up a tower. There was a restaurant and a monk selling wine. Not bad view tho. ... read more
