I arrived in Ljubljana - which I still have trouble pronouncing, and spelling with all those consenants - mid-afternoon. I immediately went off to find and check into my hostel, the Celica. I liked the place right off the bat. As a former prison-turned-artsy-fartsy-hostel-bar, I was expecting something different from your average hostel and I was not disappointed. The place is really clean, has lots of cool spaces to hang out, and everyone is super-friendly. Within around 5 minutes of arriving at Celica, I was in my room - a 12-bed dorm unfortunately as all the smaller, prison cell rooms were already booked. I immediately met two blokes - 42 year old David from Whales and 23-year old Cathal (pronounced Ko-hal) from Ireland. We went down to the Celica bar where we drank a number of ... read more

I am going to jump ahead one stop to tell you about my time in Slovenia. (Budapest update to come later.) I'll start by saying this, "You should go!" In fact, go right now if possible. I found Slovenia to be brilliant. In the northwest it has the Julian Alps, in the east it has wine country, the southwest has a bit of coast (and you can always go to Croatia for more of that), and Ljubljana is a truly beautiful capital city. Ljubljana (lube-lee-on-a) has only around 300,000 people but boasts quite an amazing history and culture. There is more picturesque architecture than there is memory in my camera. Whether it's the hilltop castle, brightly painted churches, greening copper statues, pastels of fading paint, art nouveau residences, etc...LJ has plenty of pleasing visuals. In fact, ... read more

I know when to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong....and today is the day. I did need to pack that jumper and my waterproof would have come in handy too. We arrived in Lake Bled to be told by the very helpful taxi driver that until yesterday they had had the best weather all year. Luckily for us then that we experienced some of their worst weather! It has rained every day for most of the day. Ok we landed another 4 star hotel (we should have been in the self catering apartments but they upgraded us!) but the weather is anything but 4 star. The scenery is breath taking but throughout the day you lose sight of the mountains because the rain clouds descend! But enough moaning what have we done in ... read more

Slovenia was back on the Mediterranean. The easiest way to tell I’d hit the Med again was the men. Perhaps they should rename it Slobber-enia. They stared, they whistled, they called out, there was a backside slapping incident… I could barely hear myself think over the din. I caught the train from Czech through Austria to Ljubljana. My opinion of Vienna is well-publicized (ie. Most boring city in Europe - perhaps the world) - so I completely bypassed it. The scenery was all green mountains and blue rivers and lakes. My cabin mate Anna was on her way to Zagreb for a peace convention and regaled me with great stores about her family, work and travels making the journey seem far shorter. As any solo train traveler will tell you, it’s also nice to have a ... read more

We arrived in Ljubljana on Saturday afternoon and the town was shut! Even the tourist information at the train station shut three hours before our guide book said it would. With directions to the nearest 2 star hotel in hand we trudged through the heat to find it - however when we did fear of Eli Roth's film 'Hostel' sprung to mind and we beat a hasty retreat to the town centre. Aah...the town centre....much better! Another tourist information centre had details of a 4 star hotel deal in the town at the Grand Union Hotel...I know, deals during the summer months, this cannot be I hear you cry, but it was true. So without too much thought we booked in for three days of luxury! With free use of a rooftop swimming pool and sauna ... read more

... read more

好無奈地,導遊只係俾左40分鐘free time(連埋行番去上車地點o既時間)我地。 yeah~... read more

Geo: 46.0514, 14.506Arrived back around 10 and we went for a final walk and drink in the old town. This place seems really alive and all the sidewalk cafes chairs are occupied. There are more locals than tourists and this country seems reasonably priced. We went to bed early after our big, tiring day.... read more

Geo: 46.0514, 14.506As I was about to leave the room for sightseeing, the girl opposite my bed asked if I wanted to spend the day with her and two other single travellers that she had just met. I said yes. There was Mariah (Dutch), Maeve (Irish) and Carlos (Mexican). Our first stop was the market to find food. Then Mariah, Carlos and I went to do some sightseeing, while Maeve went to find a washing machine. We saw a section of an old Roman wall dating back 15AD. Then went to the history museum of Ljublana. Where they have the only Egyptain mummy in Slovenia. We then met Maeve at the square, near the Triple Bridge, under is the Ljubljanica River. We caught the train to the castle at the top of the hill- such a ... read more
