. Our taxi to the airport today was a mix of Uber and the guy next door with a car we can rent. It was a little old corolla type of car with half the boot taken up by an LPG bottle. I’m pleased to report that he has the same sense of pride in his car and makes sure it is washed at least once a year. The case had to sit in the front with the driver and 3 of us squeezed into the back. I didn’t even bother with the seatbelt. The upside was that he knew the way, took a few risks to get us into the traffic, and he only cost about $5. He had a very good tip because where were going zloty are of no use. , We are ... read more

To Slovakia or not, that is the question. Formerly part of Czechoslovakia, Bratislava is Slovakia's capital city. It Is located on the train route from Budapest to Vienna, sits along the beautiful Danube River, and very close to the Austrian border. It became the capital as recent as 1993. But the nightlife is said to be among the best in this part of Europe, though the city itself is nota raving beauty. Notably a nice place to hang out, Bratislava is safe, friendly, and hassle-free. And there is always something to do, which I like. With a population of only 415,000, it is smaller than the city of Fresno, next door to my home in Clovis. The city still has a goodly share of Communist era buildings in the modern city center. The city has two ... read more

I'm so glad this was a tour stop a very small nation with a lot of pride. Standing at the castle our guide told us on a clear day you could see Vienna! Slovakia is surrounded by Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary. It would be a close race for best guide ever on this trip but I might have to pick Monika in Bratislava. I know I keep saying our guides has such passion for history and country but Monika really brought it home. Through the countries we visited the stories were similar in that all guides spoke of the wars, occupation of Communist leaders, what it did to the people and economy. Ever present was the joy in being able to rebuild and restore their countries to there former glory. Monika speaks at least 5 ... read more

I woke up early to get various metro links to ‘Schwedenplatz', where the boat leaves to Bratislava. I got on the boat and we started cruising down the (actually quite murky brown) Danube. As we got a bit further out of Vienna and the clouds started to clear, the river surface did start to reflect the blue skies……so I suppose I can let Strauss off! It only took about an hour and a half to get to Bratislava as the catamaran boat was pretty speedy…..and we were going DOWNSTREAM! (Well remembered all my avid readers! ? ) I walked to my hostel (named Hostel Blues, hopefully for the music not the emotions) and left TP there while they were preparing the room to allow check in. I hate myself a little bit for this – but ... read more

Rainy rainy day today..! They were calling for thunderstorms in the afternoon so I figured I should get my walking done in the morning when it's only spitting rain. I climbed up to the Slavin Memorial (oh God so many steps) and of course as I got near the top it started to rain a lot harder. Not a thunderstorm though, so still in action. The memorial is for those Soviet soldiers who died helping to liberate Bratislava from the Nazis. It's mostly tombstones of Soviet soldiers. I found the 4 statues in each corner quite interesting - at one end you have two statues with girls dancing/celebrating(?) with banners, at the other end you have 2 soldiers and a boy - one side the boy looks sad, on the other side the boy and one ... read more

I had a very all over the place day today..! But it was all based in history. I headed down into the Old Town to get things started this morning - hit up Billa (grocery store) for my yogurt drink and breakfast croissant and off I went lol. I did the "Be Free" Walking Tour - I always enjoy these - doesn't matter what city I'm in, if they have a free walking tour I'm there. We started in Hviezdoslavovo square (they taught us how to say it... I already forget) and walked for a bit more than an hour. My God it was hot and humid though... at least the tour guide tried to keep us in the shade the most she could. We saw the usual spots, but I was honestly so hot that ... read more

I said goodbye to sleepy Presov this morning and headed off to the hustle and bustle of Bratislava - I took an earlier train to Kysak to make absolute sure I made my connection to the InterCity train. I had an hour to kill at Kysak, so I just read, my usual stopover activity. I'm reading "Quiet" by Susan Cain and it's really fascinating - it's basically about introverts. I'm about halfway through it and it's given me quite the insight into my own life and in to how I go about as a teacher. Over the past 2 years I've had 3 or 4 people recommend the book to me - took me awhile to get there haha, but sure glad I did. Train ride to Bratislava was luxury by comparison to my other rail ... read more

It was another checkout day today (they seem to come round so quick) so after brekkie we packed up, paid our debts and said goodbye to Steph and our Korean roomies (first and last words as they kept to themselves). Today we are leaving Vienna heading across to Bratislava for the day and then finally on to Budapest. With only a little bit of stress, (the journey took longer than expected) we tubed across to Wien HBF and caught the 1h train to Bratislava. Once we had struggled to dump our bags in the automated storage lockers at Bratislava station, due to the machines only taking coins and requiring a specific coinage, next up was struggling to get a city map, transport map, ticket for the correct zones and duration and most importantly, correct bus. This ... read more

So let’s see, my last post ended with free time on the deck. Shortly after that, we had our emergency briefing. Yes, we had to bring our life jackets but they told us, “Really all you need to do is grab a drink and go to the top level. The Danube is not that deep and the top deck will be out of the water”. This was the quickest briefing I’ve ever had. So now, we are sailing up the Danube and watching the sites go by. At first we were just in Hungry, then Hungry was to our south and Slovakia was to our North. We saw several really yellow fields, so Nancy googled and it turns out these are canola oil fields. Well, no they are rape seed fields and they make canola oil ... read more

Tazke prebudzanie o 4/00, likvidacia dalsej suciastky. Zbavujem sa tricka, v ktorom som spaval. Na ranajky dojedam este pukance a hor sa na letisko. Pred ubytkom ma uz caka zrejme manzel domacej.
