Dobrý deň (Good day), Like the title of this blog says, I made an unplanned visit to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. The plan was to go straight to Poland after Budapest but then I thought "why not stop briefly in Bratislava first"? Slovakia used to form one single country together with Czech Republic, called "Czechoslovakia" between the end of World War II and 1993. The train from Budapest to Bratislava took about 2,5 hours. Bratislava is also Slovakia's largest city with about half a million people and lies on the shores of the Danube River. Vienna, Austria's capital, is just about 40km from Bratislava but I've been there already in 2006 and didn't want to go again. Bratislava is not a big city which is good because I didn't have much time to stay here...just two ... read more

But first we would be stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia for the day to explore. After a local hearty meal time was slipping away. We walked the streets of Bratislava Old Town and ended up at ‘Bratislava castle’- The massive rectangular building with four corner towers stands on a quite isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube river in the middle of Bratislava. It is an outstanding feature of the city. It provides an excellent view of Bratislava, of Austria and, when there is good weather, of Hungary. Many legends are connected with the history of the castle. 200km’s later and we were checked into once again the wombats hostel in Budapest, Hungary. The twin cities of Buda and Pest, which sit either side of the mighty River Danube, and together are ... read more

Last minute work call to go on extra help mission in Bratislava for 4 weeks. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and, with a population of about 460,000, the country's largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the Danube River and the left bank of the Morava River. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries. Bratislava is the political, cultural, and economic center of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament, and the Slovak Executive. It is home to several universities, museums, theaters, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions. Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions also have headquarters there. The cityscape of Bratislava is characterized by medieval towers and grandiose 20th-century building... read more

Suunnistin sitten vanhaankaupunkiin. Loysin kahvilan, jossa sai kayttaa nettia juoman hintaan 15 minuuttia. Tapasin paikallisen nettitutun. Kaytiin ensin viinilasillisella. .Hyvin nukuttu yo: klo 22 - 6. Aamupalalla juttelin tsekkiperheen kanssa saksaa. Tavaroiden kasaaminen. En vaihtanut paalleni puhdasta t-paitaa, kun ajattelin etta junamatkalla tulee kuitenkin hiki. Menin ensin metrolla, sitten ratikalla. Varasin aikaa reilun tunnin. Matka rautatieasemalle kesti 40 minuuttia. Ensimmaisen puoli tuntia juna mateli Budapestissa, silloin nain viela viimeisen ratikan. Sitten vauhti kiihtyi. Junassa oli hyvin tilaa. Kavin ravintolavaunussa kahvilla. Ensin kauhistelin halvempiin hintoihin tottuneena 2 euron kahvia, mutta sita tulikin kannullinen, josta riitti 3 kupillista. Bratislavassa kavelin asemalta hostellille. Enaa eivat kulkeneet ratikat asemalta, kuten 10 vuotta sitten. Hostelli Mansard on keskeisella paikalla, toisin kuin Budapestin Chesscom. Netti on nopea. Kavin syomassa hostellinpitajan suosittelemassa slovakialaisessa ravintolassa Slovak Pub.... read more

About an hour's train journey from Vienna we arrive in the capital city of the Slovak Republic. The train station is run down and needs renovation and modernization. We walk to our hotel which is a short walk from the station. The historical old town is about a 15 minute walk and not arduous but dangerous if you don't look down to watch the footpath. The footpaths have been patched and therefore they are not level and the cobblestones in the old town are uneven and some have been removed. I actually twisted by ankle walking into the old town. Fortunately I was ok the next day. The city is small with a population of only about half a million. The city has some interesting buildings, some have been restored, others are waiting! The old town ... read more

One day is the most you’ll need to have a look at this small capital city. The cobble stone streets of the old town are full of attractive vistas. It’s easy to wander round as there’s hardly any traffic allowed. It’s another place where wandering the streets rather than going into things is all we did or felt we needed to do. The streets are very lined street cafes and bars which detracts a little from the buildings but generally the atmosphere was good, only came across two stag party groups! The castle/ palace on the hill has been a bit over-restored, it’s very boxy and bright white. The view from there is good, over the Danube with the UFO looking “New Bridge” and the other bank full of repetitive soviet era housing blocks. We arrived ... read more

Saturday July 6 – Another early morning. We had some breakfast and then made our way to the train station as our trains were leaving two minutes apart. Yvonne was off to raft with some friends and I was leaving for Bratislava, which is only a little over an hour away. As I sat on the train I couldn’t believe that my time there was already over. I stayed five nights and it went so fast. In Bratislava, I was now in a new country for the first time on the trip. Welcome to Slovakia. I walked to my hostel, about 15 minutes away. I couldn’t check in until noon but I did get a bed assigned and a locker for my daypack and left my big backpack behind. I quickly looked to see if there ... read more

So the decision to come here happened a little over a year ago, it’s one that I’ve continually questioned, but, as has been the norm of my life since that first BIG trip to South America, seven years ago, I’ve tried to go with the flow and make the most of the situations and the people which I find myself with – you often get asked two questions, in either order, but both accompanied with the vague expression of WTF… a) where is Bratislava? And 2) Why are you going?!!! (Cue inane laughter and the distant loony-bin sirens drawing closer…) Well, 9 months in and I’ve started pretending that I moved here at Christmas; my limited amount of Slovak is embarrassing – I really am better of in thai!!! I can ‘ahoy’(but still without murmuring 'sailor' ... read more
