Well, it is Thursday evening/Friday morning and I am almost ready. I finished packing today. I thought I was being smart in buying some cheap suitcases from Big Lots, well I got them home and the expandable zippers did not work, but I was able to get everything in the three suitcases plus one carry on so I will have an excess baggage charge, but at least everything (I hope) is over there in Russia. It was hard narrowing down to what I wanted and knowing how many warm clothes I was going to need. Those vacuum bags were great with the winter coats and sweaters. I am not sure how much good they really did with pants and I used shirts to fill voids. And I weighed each one, all are under 50# according to ... read more

Last day out of the USA!! The Royal Aurora hotel is a beautiful hotel. Too bad our stay was less than 24 hours. Got a taxi instead of using the hotel's car service, because it was cheaper. Kind of an old beatup car, but he got us there, for the rate the bellman told us he had agreed to. While waiting for the bellboy to round up a taxi, got a message from Delta saying the flight would be delayed 1:10 (turns out the flight was late getting in from Atlanta). We were warned about the check-in process at Sheremetyevo II. I just have to describe it. Upon entering the front door of the airport, you put your bags through x-ray. George had to open his suitcase to show them the little bottles and cheese knives ... read more

While nice, the train compartment is just that, meaning small. Nice little snack breakfast left in the compartment with coffee delivered. Amy was quite surprised to learn that the little jar of red stuff was not strawberry jam (it was red caviar). Let the first guy to approach us about a taxi take us. Very talkative -- wanted to practice his English. The Moscow Aurora (in Russian -- Avrora) is beautiful and centrally located. Staffed 24 hour health club with steam room and sauna. Wonderfully we got an early check in (9 a.m.), and showered and rested. Just a block from the Bolshoi, but it is being repaired. Went to Red Square (which was not named Red for communism). Massive. St. Basil's Cathedral with onion domes gorgeous. Interior is dingy, but it does date from the ... read more

Several of my friends hosted a going away party for me on Saturday. It rained a little but that did not dampen our spirits and/or fun. Some of the pictures can not be posted, yes there was alcohol involved, but we had a great time. We started around noon and I think I left Ricky's around midnight. I spend most of my day on Sunday resting and recoverying. I must also thank my sister for giving me her old digital camera. It will make things a lot easier than film, which I am a firm believer in using, but will take a lot more time and money. I spoke to my new boss yesterday and they found me an apartment. It is close to the other American living there, but I will see it a week ... read more

It was during this lovely evening with Henrique, Darren and Meg that I (we) had my (our) first encounter with the Russian Police. But I need to go back a bit to explain things...... I have learned that bad things happen to me in threes. This is a helpful thing to learn because although I never manage to prevent the second or third bad thing from happening, I am better prepared for it when it does. Yesterday as I was leaving the hostel with Henrique, I realized that I had lost my moleskine, the little black book in which I write down EVERYTHING. Phone numbers, contacts, notes, addresses, plans, everything. That was the first bad thing. Then later in the day, I felt in my pocket and noticed that I had misplaced my digital camera. And ... read more

All is well. The border crossing was easy, even though they got us up at 1am to leave Ukraine and up at 4am to enter Russia. Our hotel is the largest in europe holding 8000 beds. It is nice and we are comfortable, we are on the 18th floor and have a great view of the city. We toured the Red Square upon our arrival WOW is all that I can say, it truely is amazing to see this and St. Basil's church at the end of the square. It gave us goose bumps realizing where we were. We took a city tour and saw many great buildings that are also inspirational, they are not all Stalinesque. This evening we went to Swan Lake at the ballet house beside the Bolshoi (it is under construction). Of ... read more

My run of good weather ended on my way to the train in Ekat, a good ending to a nice city, it weeped for my departure, or tears of joy! And so, it was an early train that would take a day to complete and would have me in Moscow, and officially the end of the trans-siberian journey, though my actual journey would not end until I hit St. Pete. I was in a cabin with 3 Russians, older folks, and guess what, no english. But, the one woman wanted to speak with me so much, that when she spoke Russian, she slowed her speech down, but still, even when she spoke slowly, I could not understand her. So, it was a day of reading and sleeping, and watching the markers tick down and down, below ... read more

... read more
