Hello everyone, Who would have thought that a tourist "must" in Moscow would be to visit their subway stations? Each time I stepped off a train, it was like entering the foyer of a museum. Each had a theme and were decorated with marble, granite, handpainted murals, stained glass and chandeliers. The best ones were built in the early 1950's. The theory was to give quality to everyone's life. Their metro has nine million riders per day; the population is 10.5 million. During rush hour there is a subway every 30 seconds. The reason may be because it is so hard to get and keep a car permit. Permits are renewed every year. The car must pass a safety inspection and the driver has to pass a medical appraisal including a psych. session. The reason is ... read more

Hello Everyone, We finished our cruise along the Volga Canal that leads to Moscow. It is 128 km. long, has seven railroad bridges, twelve highway bridges, five pumping stations, eight power electric stations, eleven dams and eleven locks. It was built to bring water to Moscow. Get this--built in the 1930's in less than five years. They used convict labour. Many lives were lost. Moscow is not at all what I expected. It is much cleaner than other parts of Russia--no graffiti, no dirty streets and so on. I found out why. City workers-- called "orange jackets" are paid on a piece rate basis. The more blocks they keep clean, the more money they earn. Even better, they get a large bonus if their area is the tidiest. This is judged by the residents who get ... read more

Hey my dear friends all over the world... I have been a bit lazzy lately with this blog, so I'll try to catch up with all the activities I have done in the last 6 weeks... Due to the fact, that I missed a whole month in Moscow, time is getting short and there are still many things I haven't seen yet, so I went on an extrem-sightseeing-tour to catch up on all the things that are worth seeing... And I had to hurry 'cause I wanted to know the best places I could send my German friends too, that were going to visit me beginning of June... Sooo... let me show you all the great things I have seen and the fantastic time I spend with Russian and German friends in Moscow. On May 22nd ... read more

Red square, dancing aware. Pigeons hunt, policemen stare. Horse chestnut moment Slows down the flow of business people busying by. Small trees will grow Golden eagles, captive, will cry Monkeys, in diapers and on leads are not shy; Would you like your photo taken? ...with the captive cathedral? Well folks, we did survive Russia and have now emerged to the other side, residing safely in Poland. Now, before we tell you about Poland (will save that for tomorrow, as we really only just got here) I'll finish telling you about our last days in the mother country, Russia. On Friday (think it was friday, really no idea what day it is) we both experienced a 'first' in our lifetimes, which is what travel is all about, experiencing something new. Anyway, our first 'new experience' was getting to see an 'occupied' body bag on the side of the road....absolutely lovely! In Russia I dont think there is such a thing as the ses, and clearing the road first, calling an ambulance or any of that. Its basically just pull the bodies out, whack em in ... read more

Рш еруку акшутвы фтв афьшднб ерфтлы ащк куфвштп щгк идщп!!! Okay, the above is russian for 'hi there friends and family, thanks for reading our blog!' Thats just to give you an idea of how damn hard it is ordering a maccas burger when the menu looks like that, luckily we have the amazing tool of the 'pointer finger' ahhh, what would we do without it. Well I just spoke to my mum and it became apparent that leaving the 'gory' details out of the blog, has infact made her think that it must be really bad if I'm not writing about it, and has made her worry more, so if you want to hear about it, then here it is. (Look away now if you're a big wuss) Only teasing, its not that bad. We ... read more

Warning, the following sentences may contain dodgy characters, drug references, violence and scary toilet stories!! Okay, we were right in guessing that Moscow would be a whole nother story in comparison to sweet westernised St Petersburg....it is pure madness here!! This morning we caught the metro (underground train) along with the 10 million (yes you read correctly, 10 million, half of Australias entire population) other people that ride the moscow metro every single day....scary stuff, but we survived...yeehah!! Last night we stopped off in the red square after spending an extra 5 hrs on the bus due to the worlds craziest traffic and were chased by a gypsy woman and her 4 year old son, who then spat at us after we wouldnt give them what was in our pockets....nice!! I would fill you in on ... read more

Hi there again, on the weekend of 18th to 20th was the AIESEC May Planning Meeting (MPM) at a datcha - a weekend house a bit outside of Moscow. Many Russians have these datchas to flee from the noise and dirt of the city during summer or at least the weekends. Besides that they grow different kinds of fruit and vegetables in the gardens there, to either consume them themselves, or to sell them at markets. Datchas are very simple houses of wood. They are normally not completely furnished, a bed, some chairs, a kitchen and a table... Lucky if they have a real toilet and not just an outhouse... Well, I didn't participate in the MPM, but I went there with some others to enjoy the evening together with the members of AIESEC in Moscow... ... read more

Now as well in Spanish, at the end of the message! Jetzt auch in Spanisch, am Ende der Nachricht! Ahora tambien en español al fin del mensage! ______________________________________________________________________________ Hi Guys, Long time since I haven’t written, but due to the fact that I wasn’t in Moscow for a while there was not much to tell you… but now I’m back and this is what happened lately: Spring definitely arrived in Moscow and outside in the parks the trees are blossoming and the weather is quite nice! Well, it’s still cold in the nights, but during the days sun is shining and we reach about 18 degrees Celsius. On 11th of May we met at Sasha’s apartment where he invited us to Russian food and a nice get together. We spend a really nice afternoon, first eating ... read more

Hello I found a driver in UB, Mongolia. Muj was his name and he, I a guy from France, and two girls from Switzerland hit the road for 10 days. We explored central Mongolia and most of the Gobi desert. Muj had a Soviet jeep/van type 4-wheel drive type vehicle. It fit us all plus our packs and food for part of each day. Muj knew nomads and families along our way so we would sleep in Gers or camp each night and sometimes they had extra food. We gave them some money which was much needed. I loved this trip. We had such a good time. We all were great friends by the end of our time. That many days and nights together. So many great things to see and do. I don't have the ... read more
