I have found that it is very easy to get Russian professors off topic. They will go on tangents about just about anything. Which really isn't bad at all because they speak Russian the whole time. So I'm still learning. Yesterday we started my Russian literature class having a debate about how well Pushkin knew Russian. During the 1800s the Russian aristocracy spoke mostly French, so Pushkin learned Russian as a second language. My professor says that he constructed sentences like they would be constructed if it was in French. Somehow from there we ended up talking about gender roles in Russia. The professor said that Russian men often live like babies their whole lives. Both the husband and wife normally work but the husband rarely does anything around the house. He also said that women ... read more

Hello Everyone! After leaving England on the 4th of September I spent 3 days in Moscow seeing the sites. I arrived quite late at night and the passport control at Moscow airport was really strict. I was met at the airport by a taxi driver organised by the hostel where I was staying which was a relief as my flight was a couple of hours delayed and passport control at Moscow was really strict and it was dark when I arrived. It was a pleasant drive into the city as all the buildings were lit up. Everyone at the hostel was really friendly and it was really well organised. Most people there were europeans also heading for Asia on the Trans-Siberian. They had a common room where everyone gathered in the evening to chat and watch ... read more

Saturday September 9, 2006 - I took the overnight train to Moscow last night. When I got to the train station and found my train I had to ask a few people which train car I was on and then show my passport along with my ticket to board. But so did the Russians. I then had to ask which bed was mine - it turned out to be the upper bed above the small table that also turned into a bed. I had chosen third class instead of second to save money, and it was a car without separate sleeping compartments. Just the whole hall was filled with beds. It ended up being a good decision. Someone helped me store my bag on the rack above my bed and then I read my Russia guide ... read more

Everyone seems to be sick now. I think most people became sick after the overnight train ride. My host family seems to have very different ideas about what sick people should do than in the U.S. I've been sick since last week and every time I leave the home to go outside my host mom shakes her head and asks me why I'm going outside when I'm sick. One nice thing about being sick is that I get to have soup for dinner every night. My host mom makes the best soups. Unfortunatley she thinks that sour cream is an integral part of every soup and so I always get lectures for not wanting any in my soup. Classes are going well though. I decided to take all my classes in Russian. I could have taken ... read more

Some people have asked me what the fashion is in Moscow. Well that is just about as varied as it is in the States. Some things stand out as being noticably different, however. In Russia it is completely unacceptable to wear shorts. When it gets hot women wear skirts and men have to wear pants. Probably the strangest fashions in Moscow are Elf shoes and purses for men. I don't know what the elf shoes are really called, I just dubbed them that because they have an very elongated toe that curls up. This is considered to be one of the most fashionable shoes for men and only the well off business men can afford them. Women dress up more here. They usually wear makeup and take great care in how they dress. Women here are ... read more

Dear Diary, The trip to Moscow was completely mis-sold. It would seem that the famous Warsaw to Moskva Express has lost much of its Expressiness. It's now more of a Warsaw to Moskva clatter and crawl. It takes 21 hours to complete the journey by which time the passengers who opted for the less conventional two-stop route have already been in Moskva for two hours. Still, the border guard at the gateway to the Russian Federation was nice - no need to bribe him or offer him cigarettes as many people seem to experience. We even go a smile from him when he opened the cabin door and Vik banged her head on the bunk above as she leapt forward with her passport held infront of her like a priest brandishing a bible at an exorcism. ... read more

Arrived in Moscow and found our hostel, Godzillas. Hostel ok but got eaten alive by mosquitoes on our first night - welcome to travelling!! We'd been up at 5 in the morning to catch our flight from Heathrow, so were obviously delighted when the party people and the customary guitar-player were in the kitchen (next door to our room) until 6 the next morning! Orla asked for a new room the next day but was told it was a one off and wouldn't happen on the Saturday night. Saturday 9th, we got up late and made our way to Red Square to take in the sights. Also visited GUM shopping arcade alongside the Square. It's full of designer shops (way out of our league now!!) Lots of fur shops - mink coats ranging from 4k to ... read more

After an 8 hour overnight train journey we reached Moscow from St. Petersburg. This was our first experience of Russian trains and it was very positive. Arrived at the hotel at 6am, but couldnt check in until 10am, so we sat in the bar staring at the receptionist until 10am. We then slept until our guided tour at 2pm. I doubt we were the most enthusiastic tourists our guide had ever had. After being introduced to the scarily efficient metro system, we headed into the city centre. To say our tour was based heavily around Moscow's architecture would be a minor understatement - lets just say the woman could tell us when every brick was laid and by whom. Still the tourwas quite interesting. After a traditional Russian dinner of Pizza we headed back to the ... read more

Monday night I went with everyone to Boarhouse, a bar that has great discounts on Monday nights. They have a dance floor and DJ. I never drunk alcohol in the states so I still have a hard time judging how much I should drink. I thought that I would be safe with a half liter (everyone else was drinking far more) but apparently not. By the time that everyone started dancing I was fairly tipsy. Later on I met a Russian girl, Tolya, who said that my dancing was old fashioned and wanted to show me how to dance. So we danced a bit and that was fun. Between the loud music, my tipsy state, and my limited Russian vocabularly it was virtualy impossible to have a conversation. But I had a good time nonetheless. At ... read more
