It’s been nice here in Costinesti too. I’ve had a wonderful time with my boyfriend. We played in the warm water and took pictures on the “stafilopods”. We hugged and kissed in the warm light…He’s been with me all the time and we’ve shared a lot of great moments together. When the sun set in, there was party time!!! We went to the one place that remains the same every year (in a positive way I mean): White Horse. This rock and roll café or pub is awesome. It’s always crowded in here and the people are great and really know how to have fun. Some traveled for 16 hours and the first place they wanted to visit in Costinesti was White Horse. If you ever come here, don’t miss it! The music is like nowhere ... read more

I don’t want to be a negative thinker. I make abstraction of the bad things around me and try to have fun. I criticize a lot though, but wouldn’t you? Just take a look at what the word “resort” means to some people. I photographed Costinesti and had a revelation of what civilization means to some. I expect things to be different in other countries. For now, I am actually stuck here and obliged to “enjoy” the weird vacation I’m having in this fair. There’s food everywhere. A multitude of kiosks and small shops, fast food counters and “get it yourself” cafeterias pave the way to the beach. It’s a sad view. The place is crowded and smells like fish, kebabs and, the most popular, shawarma (saorma). Maybe it does sound interesting. For a moment you ... read more

I hoped to have a nice summer. I wanted to go abroad and have a unique experience. Things don’t always go as want them to. My plans changed and visiting France, England, Spain or Italy remained a dream for the winter period. However, I did have a “unique” experience as I visited Costinesti, a “village-town” on the shores of the Black Sea. I’ve visited this location before, but its appearance was a little bit different then. Last year, strong storms and floods affected this place. I saw it on TV. Costinesti was devastated. The big Obelisc (or Obelix as some call it), which is the symbol of this resort, was hit by enormous waves and dragged on the beach. The local houses were underwater and many people died. They were afraid for their lives, but for ... read more

so were actually ın Istanbul rıght now (ıncredıble) but ıll get to that ın the next update. ıve fınally found a computer wıth wındows xp so ım every so slowly uploadıng pıctures onto all the prevıous romanıan entrıes. that beıng saıd, go back and look at the pıctures. theres only a few so dont get too excıted, but take what you can get.... Anyway...after arriving in Bucharest, it took us 40 minutes to find our hostel, despite its being located um...2 blocks from the train station. I blame it on the "English" used by the Canadian hostel owners in their directions. This cute little boy let us in and tried to help before his Mom came back from the bank. The story of the place is kind of interesting...The hostel itself is an old home that ... read more

the train ride to Brasov was uneventful, though we did talk to that Austin woman for half of the time. Being from Texas, her speech was painfully slow and sometimes we just wanted to smack her and tell her to get to the point. arriving at the train station, we were approached by this woman Maria who apparently worked at Rolling Stone hostel, a place we had read bad reviews about. she kept trying to tell us our hostel was booked and to take a flyer but we just said 'bye' and kept walking. about ten minutes later while waiting for the bus to the old town plaza she came up to us once again, telling us that people had come to her from our hostel, kismet dao, and that they had a reservation but were ... read more

So today Jeff and I did the most unexpected thing ever. We fucking climbed down a mountain. Oh, ya, in the rain. Who does that?? And yes, I almost fell like 400 times on slippery-ass rocks. I even scraped off half of the skin on my side on a tree that I had to grab onto so as not to fall off the mountain. And then after not falling even once on the mountain, we get down to a set of stairs and I slip and almost fall on my ass. Stupid manmade structures. We've also visited the Black Church, which was burnt at one point, I think. Also saw this old 16th Century fortress atop a hill. And ya. We shopped a little, but I didn't buy anything. It was sort of a weird, not-doing-much ... read more

well well well...what a surprise, here i am again in romania without an updated-enough system to be able to plug in my camera and upload pictures. this time we're gonna pretend i'm still in sighisoara.... the train ride to sighisoara was uneventful besides meeting a really nice romanian girl with excellent english skills. her dad works in chicago and she aspires to study medicine in chi-town, so the three of us exchanged e-mails. it would be cool to show a romanian around town...not that i'll be home anytime soon. pretty much as we stepped off of our train we were met by this guy trying to get us to stay at this hostel. it just so happened to be the one we had reservations at so he showed us where it was, 50 meters to the ... read more

Alecia: It’s now July 16th, and we have 2 weeks of pre-service training left. At the end of the month we officially become Peace Corps volunteers, and depart for our new home. Last week we learned where that new home was: Odorheiu Secuiesc and we paid it a visit. Odorheiu Secuiesc is the un-official Hungarian capital of Romania. It’s a town of about 40,000 people (98% of which are ethnically Hungarian, or Szeckler as they call themselves) nestled in the rolling green hills of central Transylvania - - the bellybutton of Romania. The Hungarian connection is emphasized by three daily buses making the 12 hour trek from Budapest to Oderhei so Hungarian tourists can experience what they consider the best of Hungarian culture. At this point I have a lot to learn about what it means ... read more

Hello I know everyone is having a great summer. I wish i was there. Esp for the fourth. July is on the downslide. I have been gone nearly 7 months. Wow... I am in Romania now. OHhh how i miss Anatolia I miss my town and the mountains. I miss the food and the people. I miss the times and the purity. My last few days in my town were good. I was asked to be a guest teacher at the summer school for English. People of all ages, from all around the region came and were split into 3 different levels of ability. I was happy to go and mainly answered questions and gave proper pronunciation to everything. They couldn't believe an American was there living and in their class. I thank my friend Attila ... read more

So I eat lots of mushrooms in Romania. Because there aren't many vegetarian-friendly dishes. But there are lots of mushroom dishes. I can't complain. I really like mushrooms. Also, I could never live in Romania. There are too many stray dogs and I would just take them home with me. I would be like Ace Ventura Pet Detective, completely surrounded with dirty, smelly, mean dogs. How glorious, haha. Finally, my back is like an aligator's. I'm peeling like crazy. And. Two days ago I was oozing from my back. I think I had little blister things. It was gross, but I sort of secretly thought it was cool. But don't tell anyone: it's a secret. Anyway, we're in Brasov right now. We just arrived today from Sighisoara, which was a rather small town where Dracula was ... read more
