A Long Way The Team had a Board meeting and decided we would make blog entries separately so here we go. Mom's Entry Sitting 8 hours, whether in a plane or in a classroom, isn’t good! (I now know why God created beds on the 3rd day.) Fellow educators, I have a new appreciation for the “movement” piece in the classroom. I am officially running for the position of TPS Ambassador for Movement—I will run for that office on the platform of removing all desks from the classroom! The Chicago to London flight was pretty amazing. I don’t normally hang out at 35,000 feet for any extended period of time so it was neat to see what happens up there over the course of 8 hours. The Matt member of The Team tried to explain to ... read more

We’ve already come to have a deeper appreciation for our country. Several significant, non-planned events today made us rethink our lives in America. First, a little about Romania. Briefly, Romania was under the Communist rule of Nicolae Ceausescu until 1989. He was the people’s ruler until his latter years—people were starving and without much. After a revolt, Ceausescu fled Bucharest, but was tracked down and killed on Christmas Day, 1989. So Romania has been a “free” country only 18 years. Because The Team has never been to a young, democratic country, we have been totally amazed. As my brother says, “This is the Wild West.” Things that amazed us today: The driving situation! In 1989, there were 2 gasoline stations in the whole city of Bucharest (population about 1.5 million then). There just weren’t automobiles ... read more

Just 3 comments for this entry: 1. You can go 29 hours without sleep and still function SOMEWHAT 2. The Team didn't know there were so many languages spoken in the world--we thought everyone spoke English 3. The sun set and rose within 2 hours on the Trans-Atlantic flight...a glorious work of God's hand One more entry: The Team is going to sleep and will post pictures tomorrow. Ciao... read more

From the Maramures we went over the mountains to Southern Bucovina, where there are a number of painted monastries. Weve read the monastries are a few hundred years old, all on the UNESCO world heritage list and have gorey paintings of stories from the old testament on the inside and outside walls. We´ve been enjoying our time in Romania so much that this was certainly good enough an excuse for us to go to explore another region of the country... Due to the lack of tourists up here, there are again no campsites in this region. Since weve been told you can stay at the monastires and there are plenty of them, we drove up to one and tried to find a monk. Its seems we hit evening mass time as they were no monks to ... read more

Botiza Botiza is a little village in northern Maramures, off a road, off a road, off the main road. When we got to Botiza we took a side road and found a nice guesthouse where we asked about parking up our van. The said 5 euros to camp in their garden and to use thier bathroom and shower. We had just managed to park the van between the spud patch and the plum tree when our hosts, Alexanderso and Lucia had poured us a glass of thier home made plum brandy (palincă) and invited us to sit down with them and their guests for a drink. Conversation was a little slow as we have no Romanian and their only forign language was French, so had to rely on what Shilpa remebered from French in school. With ... read more

Wooden Churches, Folk Festival and Mass! The drive from Rohia to the Maramures was to take us by a number of traditional wooden chruches that are on the UNESCO world heritage list. Our timing at the first church coincided with Sunday morning mass. As we walked up to the wooden church two old ladies, dressed in full traditional costume ushered us in, next thing we knew we were sitting in Greco-Catholic mass, which turned out to be quite a fascinating experience. In contrast to the system Im used to in Ireland, it was men at the front and women at the back. I got a seat in the front section and Shilpa got a kneeling space at the back. The interior of the church was stunning, very small inside with wooden walls colourfully decorated with paintings ... read more

We started our drive for a region called the Maramures. Reading about this area was really what enticed us to visit Romania. Due to its geography, the huge mountain range, it has been seperated from the rest of Romania. So it really did feel like going back 100 years in time and some of the villages felt untouched by modern times. Our first stop was a Cluj Napoca, a large university town, with lots of cafe bars. We only stopped briefly as we were excited to head to the more medieval Romania. Travel distance by this time we had realised took us twice the time we expected due to the state of the roads and on going road works on all the 'major' roads! As was it was dangerous to travel in the dark due to ... read more

The Hollywood of Romania, Transylvania. Thats what this area should be called just because of the white nametag signs on both Brasov an Rasnov mountains, quite funny to look at :) I arrived on Tuesday at midday after 16hrs on the night train, an experience in itself. 6 beds, 3 on each side in a small cabin, shared with two romanians that couldnt speak english. One was so large that she could nearly not fit in the bed space and was a rival for the snoorer in Newquey, not much sleep when she was! The other seemed quite nice, she put on her laptop and we wached the movie 300 with Romanian subtitles. The train stopped 4 times between 10 an 4am for border an passport checks, got a few stamps from that peice of ... read more
